The CW is adding to its summer slate with Two Sentence Horror Stories, launching Thursday, August 8 at 8p. Anthology series was inspired by viral fan fiction. Previously announced sci-fi action series Pandora premieres Tuesday, July 9 at 8p, while action thriller Bulletproof launches Sunday, July 28 at 8p. Remaining summer premiere dates include Wednesday, August 7 for comedy game show Hypnotize Me; Tuesday, August 13 for investigative documentary series Mysteries Decoded; and Monday, August 19 for season two of CW Seed musical comedy I Ship It. Extreme sports docu-series Red Bull Peaking debuts Friday, Septemjber 13. The net also set series finale dates for Jane the Virgin (Wednesday, July 31) and iZombie (Thursday, August 1).

Jon Steinlauf, Chief U.S. Advertising Sales Officer for Discovery, knows better than most how mega media deals can lead to big results. Steinlauf, a featured speaker at Cynopsis Big TV Conference, offers a preview of the insights he’ll be sharing in September.
What have been the benefits – to advertisers and the audience – of Discovery’s acquisition of Scripps networks?
“Advertisers covet great media brands and Discovery has more of them than anyone. Clients also would rather invest their time and money with fewer bigger and better partners. By consolidating spend with us, they can meet the needs of their portfolio, at scale, within a single media relationship. Audiences like some of our crossover story lines and stunts. One example is the new HGTV series Christina on the Coast starring Christina Anstead from Flip or Flop fame. Her husband, Ant, is a star on our hit show Wheeler Dealers on another Discovery network, MotorTrend. They appear together in Christina’s new series. In stunts like Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and HGTV’s A Very Brady Renovation, viewers will see talent from across our networks in cameo appearances.”
How did that deal solve for challenges in the new world of media?
“When two direct competitors come together as these companies did, one of the great benefits is the sharing of best practices. Both companies excelled at different areas of our business in the domestic and global markets. For example, Discovery had a larger global footprint and had made a bigger investment in data solutions and ad-supported TV streaming apps. On the other hand, Scripps had more experience selling its brands convergently across TV, digital and print.”
What innovation do you predict will have the biggest impact on the business of media?
“TV will get smarter and more personalized the way music has. Companies with the best content libraries will win out.”
Among the announcements at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday: AppleTV will be compatible with Xbox One and Playstation Dualshock controllers, so they can be used with Apple’s upcoming gaming service; users in a family will each be able to have their own profile on AppleTV for recommendations; iTunes is being replaced after 18 years by three separate apps, Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Podcasts; iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch will have an optional dark mode in iOS 13; a new login platform, Sign in with Apple, will allow users to log in to outside apps with FaceID; and the Mac Pro desktop is returning to its traditional tower shape.
Simulmedia announced new capabilities for its D2Cx.com  beta. “When we launched D2Cx.com in beta back in October 2018, we designed it to help TV advertisers get on the air quickly and affordably, learn what combination of networks, dayparts and programs produce the optimal mix for customer acquisition, and scale accordingly,” said Simulmedia CEO and founder Dave Morgan. “We’ve improved on this foundation with new features that advance the cause of democratizing access to TV advertising, inviting more direct-to-consumer (D2C) marketers onto TV at lower costs, while improving usability and speed.” Among the changes: Campaign minimums have been removed; new, near real-time measurement and attribution tools; new, automated creative diagnostic tools; new, automated bid management tools, and a redesigned D2Cx.com application interface.

The IAB will be releasing its first Data-Driven Video Best Practice Guide today, a resource to educate the marketplace on what is possible, benefits of a data-driven video strategy, key considerations, potential challenges, and more. When it comes to measurement, the guide advises:
  • Go beyond the click: Traditional KPIs like video completion rate and clicks should be balanced against more accurate determinations of success, like conversions for performance-based campaigns, and time-spent, for branding and awareness campaigns.
  • Establish benchmarks: Marketers can create benchmarks by conducting A/B testing. For example, run a generic version of the video first to establish benchmark for drop off and conversion rates. Then run the optimized video to understand how it performs against the benchmark.
  • Test and iterate: Check campaign performance on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and adjust your strategy based on performance.
Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings capabilities will expand on YouTube’s mobile app to 26 new markets, including Hong Kong, India, Greece, Spain, Israel and Puerto Rico. Marketers had been able to measure YouTube audiences on web browsers globally, but not the mobile app everywhere. “Providing marketers with independent measurement of YouTube’s mobile audiences globally is a major step forward for the industry,” said Amanda Tarpey, SVP of Digital Product Leadership. “With the expansion of Digital Ad Ratings to measure audiences inclusive of YouTube’s sizeable mobile footprint, advertisers in more than 30 markets will have the comparability, coverage and transparency they need to maximize the impact of their digital media around the world.”

Facebook launched Avatars in Australia yesterday, allowing users to customize lookalikes of themselves for stickers in chats and comments. The Bitmoji-like feature is slated to be introduced globally in late 2019 or 2020.
In more Facebook news, the social media giant is in early talks with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission about its plans to launch its own digital coin, reports the Financial Times. No formal application for the cryptocurrency project has been filed, but Christopher Giancarlo, head of the CFTC, was quoted as saying the commission is “very interested” in understanding the plans better.
In the ongoing battle against fake news, Twitter has acquired London-based start-up Fabula AI, which uses machine learning to identify the authenticity of information spread on social media. The Fabula AI team will join Twitter’s machine learning Cortex unit. The deal “will be a key driver as we work to help people feel safe on Twitter and help them see relevant information,” Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal wrote in a blog post. 
Shares of Amazon and Alphabet, parent to Google, slipped Monday after weekend reports in the NY Times and Washington Post that the Federal Trade Commission will allegedly scrutinize the dominance of Amazon and Department of Justice will investigate Google anti-competitive practices.
Discovery platform Taboola announced an exclusive strategic relationship with NBC News that will see NBC News implement Taboola Feed on desktop, tablet, mobile web and mobile app to increase user engagement and revenue. The deal builds on an existing relationship between Taboola and NBC News, which have already been working together for five years. Similar to how people experience social networks, Taboola Feed encourages audiences on the open web to stay engaged on a publisher’s site by scrolling through a personalized stream of content, video, and other experiences the user might be interested in discovering next.
In honor of Black Music Month, REVOLT will be unveiling new series as well as new episodes of shows, concert specials, documentaries, curated music video shows, and other specials on television, as well as new episodes of the net’s original digital-exclusive shows. Tomorrow, June 5 at 10p, brings a special presentation of She Got Next, spotlighting female artists.
Tracy Morgan (The Last O.G.) will host ABC’s The 2019 ESPYS Presented by Capital One on Wednesday, July 10 at 8p. “I am very excited to be hosting The ESPYS,” said Morgan. “I hope my Uncle Sidney Poitier is there with my biological father Tony Dorsett and my second cousin Herschel Walker. Channel 4  has commissioned independent factual production company Barcroft Studios to produce a raft of short form factual digital films in a year-long output deal for the recently announced 4Real youth programming content strand.
