MTV ’s Fear Factor revival premiered Tuesday. How was it updated from NBC’s 2001-2006 original? “It was an exciting challenge coming up with a version of Fear Factor for a generation who has seen it all online and on TV,” Charles Wachter, exec producer/showrunner, tells Cynopsis. “We focused on the fact that every generation has the same fears – whether that be snakes, drowning, heights or some other intense phobia. We took those and added a layer that tapped into the millennial mindset. For example, in one challenge contestants are suspended on a giant teeter totter, hundreds of feet in the air, while their cell phones are hanging off the edges and could drop at any moment. Can they save them in time? It’s twists like these that elevate this new version of Fear Factor for a younger generation.”

DIGITAL DATA

The average person will devote 26% of their daily media consumption time accessing the mobile internet via brower and apps in 2017, estimates PublicisZenith. That’s up 19%, but not necessarily such bad news for traditional media. “Some of this extra consumption time was cannibalized from traditional media, but the spread of mobile technology has given a boost to overall media consumption by allowing users to access more media, in more places, and at more times than ever before,” said the report.
