The clock hasn’t run out on Timeless after all. NBC canceled the time travel drama last week, but changed course after fan outcry. “So huge thanks to NBC for supporting us,” tweeted EP Eric Kripke on Saturday. “And THANKS for the fan support….It worked, guys!” A 10-episode season 2 will air in 2018.
Fox announced 2 live broadcasts with Marc Platt (Grease: Live) onboard as exec producer: Tony Award nominated musical A Christmas Story, to air in December, and 1996 Broadway smash Rent.
A&E had to suspend its live broadcast of Live PD on Saturday due to an underground transformer explosion near the network’s studios. The show, which follows policemen on patrol via dash cams and handheld cameras, hit a season high 1.5 million viewers the week prior.
Dismissed from Fox News after a New York Times article revealed $13 million in payouts to settle sexual harassment claims against him, Bill O’Reilly blamed his ouster on an “organized left-wing cabal.” Speaking Friday on Glenn Beck’s radio show, O’Reilly promised a “big, big story” exposing a group that “terrorizes sponsors, that threatens people behind the scenes, that pays people to say things.” O’Reilly also trashed the “vicious and evil media.” Beck offered O’Reilly a job at TheBlaze, saying, “We could unite our powers for good.”
Instead of settling down after a tumultuous election season, news viewership is on the rise. Year-to-date viewing of Fox News, MSNBC and CNN is up 31% in “person viewing hours,” according to Pivotal Research Group, while all news-related programming on national media is up 12%.
CBS canceled 2 Broke Girls after 6 seasons. The show earned a solid 1.8 rating among A18-49 in Live+7 numbers, but CBS did not have an ownership stake in the Warner Bros. comedy. The Great Indoors is also out, after one season.
Also off the air: NBC spin-off The Blacklist: Redemption. The freshman drama averaged a 1.2 rating among A18-49. Mother ship The Blacklist did make it to season 5.
And low-rated freshman comedy Imaginary Mary will disappear from ABC, as well as The Catch, Secrets & Lies, Dr. Ken and The Real O’Neals after 2 seasons each, and American Crime after 3.
Baby Daddy ’s current sixth season will be its last. The Freeform drama’s May 22 series finale is also its 100th episode.
Cord cutters aren’t the only ones affecting ESPN’s audience numbers, according to a report from Deep Root Analytics, which specializes in local audience understanding. Aggregated data from 43 markets found that the ESPN audience became 5% less Republican in 2016 than in 2015, and ESPN2’s audience became 10% less Republican. ESPN News saw the biggest shift, becoming 36% less Republican.
Season 3 of A&E’s Born This Way will help spread the word about ABLEnow, a savings program offering greater financial security for people with disabilities. The docu-series follows a group of 7 young adults born with Down syndrome as they pursue their dreams. The partnership includes online and social media promotion; a 60-second spot featuring ABLEnow CEO Mary Morris will run during the May 16 and May 30 broadcasts.
The deadline for the 2017 Rising Star Awards is a month away. This is a terrific chance to encourage and award the young members of your team who have demonstrated great initiative over the past year, and exhibit enormous potential.

“Three years ago, when we announced our plan to totally reinvent truTV as a comedy network, people thought we were nuts and it would never work – but at least they were nice about it,” said Chris Linn, president of truTV. “Not only have we completely changed the programming slate, but truTV has evolved into a distinct brand that appeals not only to a higher level of talent, but also to more premium audiences and advertisers.”
truTV renewals include Impractical Jokers, Jon Glaser Loves Gear, The Carbonaro Effect, Hack My Life, Adam Ruins Everything, Those Who Can’t, You Can Do Better and Comedy Knockout. Among new additions will be Laff Mob’s Laff Tracks, At Home with Amy Sedaris, Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters, I’m Sorry and The Chris Gethard Show. The net also has 4 shows in development.
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises ’ lineup of programming for the 2017-2018 television season includes over 850 hours of new formats and multiplatform original content. Telemundo’s new primetime programming line-up features three returning Super Series, El Senor de los Cielos, La Reina del Sur and Senora Acero, La Coyote, and 5 new mini-series, including one based on the life of music icon Luis Miguel and El Secreto de Selena, the story behind the death of the Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla.
The network presented the first-ever virtual reality experience for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Double Accion 52, as well as its first digital bilingual reality show, the first-ever Hispanic Snapchat show and two multiplatform content collaborations with BuzzFeed. Universo will bring back its proven hit “celeb-realities” including The Riveras, and series including The Walking Dead en Espanol.
“Telemundo continues to drive growth in Hispanic media with original content that resonates with today’s Hispanic in the U.S.,” said Cesar Conde, Chairman NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and NBCUniversal International Group. “Latinos are evolving and they are influencing our economy and mainstream culture more than ever. Telemundo has evolved with them by offering innovative entertainment, news and sports, fulfilling their growing appetite for quality programming in Spanish across all platforms.”
Univision Communications’ Upfront presentation tomorrow in NYC will have the theme “Proof of Passion,” and highlight the five passion points driving audience engagement: Soccer, News, Family, Music, and Drama. To that end: Starting in the summer of 2018, Univision Deportes will begin airing soccer’s UEFA Champions League. UCI launched Edicion Digital, a noon news show. Also ahead is family-friendly entertainment like Tu Cara Me Suena (Your Face “Sounds” Familiar), in which well-known celebrities will accept the challenge of singing live while impersonating a music icon, and game show A Jugar en Familia, executive produced by Simon Cowell.
UCI will move its annual music award shows to Sunday nights, introduce a series, Barrio Records, mixing hip-hop with a Caribbean beat, and is developing a bio-series of the aforementioned Luis Miguel’s life story. New dramas include El Ultimo Dragon, Mi Marido Tiene Familia (My Husband has a Family), Papa a Toda Madre (The Mother of all Dads) and Amar Despues de Amar (To Love After Loving), among others.
“From more catered programming to improved access to content, we have enhanced our diverse portfolio to meet the needs of not only the next generation of American youth, but also our valued clients,” said Randy Falco, president and Chief Executive Officer of Univision Communications.
