Dim the lights… American Idol is returning to the airwaves. ABC closed an agreement with producers FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment to revive the singing competition for the 2017-18 season. A host and judges will be announced at a later time. “American Idol” on ABC…that has a nice ring to it,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC, in a statement. Exec producers include FremantleMedia North America’s Trish Kinane and Jennifer Mullin. FremantleMedia International distributes the series worldwide.
 
Fox canceled Rosewood after two seasons, making room for new series pickups. The Morris Chestnut– and Jaina Lee Ortiz-starring crime drama saw initial success in fall 2016 but struggled since last fall when the network moved it to Thursdays.
 
NBC is editing its new series hopefuls. The network passed on several pilots including: comedies Spaced Out, What About Barb?, an untitled Kourney Kang project and Relatively Happy. Still alive are The Sackett Sisters, produced by Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling-Charlie Grandy’s project Champions.
 
The Grammys are in a New York State of mind. In celebration of the awards’ 60th anniversary, the event is returning to the East Coast and will be broadcast live on both coasts from Madison Square Garden on January 28 at a new time, 7:30-11p ET on CBS. Madison Square Garden last played host to the Grammys in 2003; the show has originated in LA for the past 14 years.
 
Former Dance Moms host Abby Lee Miller yesterday was sentenced to one year and one day in prison by a federal judge in Pittsburgh. The news comes almost a year and a half after Miller first was indicted on 20 counts of fraud.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is deepening his relationship with HBO. HBO Films has given the go-ahead to My Dinner with Herve, a Sacha Gervasi movie starring Dinklage and Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey). The project is exec-produced by Dinklage, Gervasi and Steven Zaillian. My Dinner with Herve centers on an unlikely friendship that evolves over a wild night in LA between a struggling journalist and actor who happens to be the world’s most famous gun-toting dwarf.
 
New midseason series Taken got a second season renewal from NBC, along with a new showrunner for its 16-ep season 2. Alex Cary, who developed the TV series adaptation of the Luc Besson movie and served as executive producer/showrunner on season 1, is departing; the search is on for a new exec to lead the series.
 
DIY Network greenlighted a new home renovation series featuring third-generation NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife Amy Earnhardt. The series will follow Dale and Amy as they transform a dilapidated historic home into a modern retreat in the Old Town historic district of Key West, FL. Premiering in early 2018, the four half-hour eps will combine Dale’s love of home improvement with Amy’s interior design expertise.
 
Production is under way on I Am Elizabeth Smart, Lifetime’s authorized original movie about the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. The movie is told from Smart’s perspective and Smart serves as producer and narrator on the project. The film will air later this year as part of a cross-network event to complement A&E Network’s new two-part Biography nonfiction special Elizabeth Smart: Autobiography (working title). Alana Bolden (Ride) will play the title role, Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale) will portray Brian David Mitchell, Smart’s kidnapper and captor for nine months, and Deirdre Lovejoy (The Blacklist) portrays co-conspirator Wanda Barzee.

The Strain will return to FX for its fourth and final season on Sunday, July 16 at 10p. As the season begins, nine months have passed since the explosion at the end of season 3 triggered a global nuclear apocalypse.
 
Reelz will revive Autopsy: The Last Hours of, its original docu series, with a new episode about pop icon Prince on Saturday, May 20 at 8p. New episodes will continue Saturdays at 9p and will focus on the lives and last hours of Steve Jobs, Bernie Mac, Patrick Swayze and Bruce Lee among others.

National Geographic last night launched Chasing Genius, a digital prosocial initiative based on the network’s first scripted series Genius, about the life and work of Albert Einstein, in partnership with GSK Consumer Healthcare. Chasing Genius is a global online hub, which will include premium content and custom storytelling, and where Nat Geo will solicit ideas to help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. GSK sponsors Genius; in addition to enabling the new digital community, the partners will bring to life the science and innovation behind some of GSK’s products – Excedrin, Sensodyne and Flonase Sensimist – through bespoke brand stories produced by National Geographic Custom Studios.
 
 
DIGITAL DOINGS
 
In an agreement that follows similar ones Disney reached with ABC affiliates and NBCUniversal made with NBC outlets, CBS affiliates have agreed to let the network negotiate digital distribution deals on their behalf with the likes of CBS All Access and other streaming services including YouTube TV.
 
Food Network ’s In the Kitchen app has added a new iMessage extension that enables users to integrate recipe inspirations and ideas into their everyday conversations. The app is currently available on iOS in the Apple Store.

RATINGS
 
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert placed first again in the weekly late night ratings, winning by its largest margin since the show’s premiere in September 2015, according to Nielsen Live+SD ratings for the week ending May 5. The show averaged 3.06 million viewers, up +12% from last week (2.74 million) and +19% from the same week last year (2.57 million).
 
Stone House Revival , the DIY Network home renovation series, delivered its highest-rated episode among viewers A25-54 since May 2016 on Wednesday, May 3, at 9:30p. The second-season episode garnered ratings that were up +81% versus year-ago levels in the timeslot. More than 500,000 total viewers tuned in to watch the episode on Wednesday night.
 
Science Channel tied for its highest rated April ever among A25-54, W25-54 and Total Viewers P+2, matching its record setting numbers of April 2016. On strength of the sophomore season of Impossible Engineering and freshman series Mysteries of the Abandoned, Thursdays saw a 27% increase versus one year ago with A25-54. On Saturdays the network gained 56% versus a year ago with A25-54, according to Nielsen L+3 ratings.
 
The new season premiere of TLC’s Little People Big World earned its best ratings since the fall of 2014 and ranked #2 on cable in its Tuesday night time period among W25-54. The return earned 2.5M P2+ viewers.
 
Estrella TV delivered a +14% growth in Total Day, tied with Telemundo among A18-49, according to the network. Estrella TV delivered the highest growth among Spanish language broadcast networks in Total Day (M-SU 6a-6a) season to date as compared to same period in 2015-2016.
 
With the finale of Univision’s Vino El Amor and the premiere of La Doble Vida de Estela Carrillo, the net out-delivered CBS, FOX and CW for the night among A18-34. 4.9 million total viewers 2+ tuned in to all or part of the debut of La Doble Vida de Estela on Univision and UniMás
 
In syndication news, the May sweep survey period (April 27 – May 24) got underway in the session ending April 30 with Dr Phil (3.4 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 3% from the week before) hitting a seven-week high and darting to an early sweep lead in the closely watched talk show race. Phil was also up the most from last year of any talker, increasing 10% and leading the circuit for a 34th straight week. Ellen DeGeneres (2.3, up 5%) snatched sole possession of second place in talk for the first time in almost three months, while Live with Kelly (2.1, down 5%) ran third in its final week before co-host Ryan Seacrest joined the program. In the overnight ratings for the frame ended May 7, the first week of the newly named Live with Kelly & Ryan improved 18% from the previous week to a 2.6/9 in the 56 metered markets, winning or coming in second in its time slots in 13 of the top 15 markets, including nine of the top 10.
 
In access, Family Feud (6.5, up 3%) finished first among the quiz shows as usual. The highest-rated show in syndication overall for the fifth week in a row was Judge Judy (6.7, up 3%), which jumped to a three-week high despite airing reruns on most days.
