IN THE NEWS

NBC canceled Emerald City after one season. The Wizard of Oz drama averaged a .7 rating among A18-49 and 3 million viewers in Live + SD Nielsens.

On the bright side, the Peacock net gave series orders to Rise, starring Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) as a groundbreaking high school drama teacher, and For God & Country, centered on an elite squad of undercover military heroes.

ABC is thisclose to a deal with FremantleMedia North America and CORE Media Group to revive one-time Fox smash American Idol, reports Variety. A March premiere is being eyed. The idea of resuscitating AI has been kicking around since before the show was laid to rest last year.

Mainstream TV networks declined to run an ad from the Donald Trump 2020 campaign that includes a graphic calling the mainstream media “fake news.” Said the president’s daughter-in-law/campaign advisor Lara Trump on Friday, “Faced with an ad that doesn’t fit their biased narrative, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC have now all chosen to block our ad. This is an unprecedented act of censorship.” CNN had said on Tuesday, “The mainstream media is not fake news, and therefore the ad is false and per policy will be accepted only if that graphic is deleted.”

Do you think networks should have aired Donald Trump’s ad? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/ .

Netflix renewed 13 Reasons Why, based on the YA novel about the suicide of a teenager, for a 13-episode second season. Exec producer Brian Yorkey, who wrote the adaptation, will take over from Diana Son as showrunner. The series has been a critical and social media success, but added content warnings after some mental health experts said it posed a risk to young people with suicidal thoughts.

The FCC is investigating complaints that Monday’s Late Show monologue, during which Stephen Colbert insulted President Donald Trump, was obscene (CBS bleeped a word, but Colbert’s meaning was clear). Since the show airs after 10p, for content to be categorized as obscene it must “depict or describe sexual conduct in a ‘patently offensive’ way; and…lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.”  While the FCC’s action caused alarm on social media, a spokesman explained to CNN that reviewing consumer complaints is “a matter of standard practice.”

If NBC’s teaser art is to be believed, its Will & Grace revival will premiere this fall. The ninth season reunites the original cast of the comedy, which ended in 2006.

Will & Grace’s Debra Messing was an honoree for excellence in media at the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards, recognizing inclusivity and accurate portrayals of the LGBTQ community. The ceremony, held in NYC on Saturday, also saluted ID doc Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four, Oxygen reality show Strut, HBO’s VICE News Tonight, and episodes of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. (Other winners had been announced during an April ceremony.)

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

To succeed today, nonprofits need to think and act more like corporations to grow and innovate, and businesses have a mandate from their consumers to think as much about compassion and purpose as they do about commerce.” – Shelley Diamond, Chief Client Officer, Young & Rubicam and webinar panelist
