Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The 140th Kentucky Derby sprinted to 15.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals, marking the fourth time in six years that NBC’s coverage of the race bested the 15 million plateau. The event was off-pace from 2013’s 16.2 million, but also ran up against NBA Playoffs this time around. The network states that its 9.4/22 household rating ranks as the best Saturday rating on any network since the 2014 Sochi Olympics on NBC on Feb. 15. Top market was Louisville of course, with a 37.8/66. Meanwhile, fans streamed a record 4.38 million minutes of the Kentucky Derby on NBC Sports Live Extra for a 59% uptick over last year’s coverage.

ON THE AIR

Heading into the COCA-COLA 600 on Memorial Day weekend, FOX SPORTS 1 is launching 10 Days of Thunder, special multi-sport programming block anchored by two weekends of NASCAR racing, as well as the announcement of the next five inductees to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the debuts of three new FOX Sports 1 originals. Coverage begins Friday, May 16 at 11a with 12 consecutive hours from Charlotte Motor Speedway. Saturday sees the 30th running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race with qualifying coverage at 7p and green flag racing expected shortly after 9p. The following week will include the announcement of the sport’s five newest inductees on May 21 at 4p, and 100,000 Cameras: The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Thursday, May 22 at 9:30p and the first of three NASCAR Race Hub primetime specials at 8:30p as well as Empty Cup: Quest for the 1992 NASCAR Championship at 8p and The 600: History of NASCAR’s Toughest Race at 9p. The green flag for the COCA-COLA 600 is set to drop at 6p on FOX.

TNT’s coverage of the 2014 NBA Playoffs delivered the network’s most-viewed and highest-rated first round since 2011, marking an average of 4,009,000 total viewers and a 2.6 U.S. HH rating for 26 live game telecasts, based on Nielsen Fast Nationals. That represents a 19% rise in viewership over last year and a 13% spike in rating.

Showtime will leverage its free preview weekend with a rebroadcast of the great Floyd Mayweather Jr./Marcos Maidana fight as well as the Amir Khan/Luis Collazo battle on Saturday at 9:30p. In addition, the channel will offer the "Epilogue" episode of All Access: Mayweather vs. Maidana at 11:45p that night with a behind-the-scenes look at the week leading up to the bout and the aftermath of the win.

After joining the Gavitt Tipoff Series with the Big East, the Big Ten is now doubling down on its east coast presence, according to BTN, announcing that the 2017 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be played at the Verizon Center in Washington DC, which will mark the 20th anniversary of the event (and the first time it will be played outside of Indianapolis or Chicago). The 2015 tournament will be played at United Center in Chicago, and shift to Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse in 2016.

NBCSN is slated to carry the Beat The Streets Team USA vs. The World international wrestling dual meet from Times Square in New York City at 10:30p tomorrow night. The lineup will include 2012 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs and feature 11 top American international wrestling stars against a team of all-stars from around the world. Jason Knapp called the action with color commentary from Olympic champion Rulon Gardner, and sideline interviews by Chris Mannix.

The Dew Tour has its slate of events locked in for the year, once again opening the season in Ocean City, Md., home of the Dew Tour Beach Championships. The five day event will take place June 25-29, and feature the sports of skateboard and BMX. The Tour will then hit Portland on Aug. 16-17 for the first of two Toyota City Championships and Brooklyn on Sept. 20-21, and will feature street and streetstyle events for both BMX and skateboard. The 2014 season wraps at Breckenridge Ski Resort, in Breckenridge, Colo., December 11-14. The slate will be carried on NBC, NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra, where Dew Tour’s dedicated digital platform will stream live competitions.

NASCAR inked a seven-year agreement with Camping World to keep the brand as the entitlement sponsor of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series through 2022. The new deal ensures that Camping World will own exclusive rights as title sponsor for a total of 14-consecutive years. Since originally becoming series entitlement sponsor in 2009, Camping World has expanded its number of stores by 35 percent, resulting in the company eclipsing $3 billion in annual revenue. The new deal also hands Camping World exclusive rights to market its Good Sam Roadside Assistance program as the Official Roadside Assistance of NASCAR and provides official NASCAR status to CarCash as the Official Auto Buying Service of NASCAR, and AutoMatch USA, as the Official Pre-owned Automobile Retailer of NASCAR.
 
ESPN announced that Regions Bank will continue its 21-year position as the Official Bank of the SEC but will now also serve as the newest sponsor of the upcoming SEC Network. Regions position also includes category exclusivity at all SEC Championship events throughout the year. In addition to a large media presence from Regions on the new SEC Network, including heavy involvement in SEC Nation, the network’s traveling campus-based pre-game show during college football season; the collaboration also provides Regions with intellectual property rights and category exclusivity in retail banking for all marketing and promotional activities involving the SEC and its FanFare activities.

Minor League Baseball revealed its list of Top 25 teams in licensed merchandise sales for 2013, with the combined totals of all 160 teams topping more than $55.4 million in retail sales for a 2.6% rise over last year. Turner Sports will be part of the action for a "first-of-its-kind" mass promotion across Turner properties surrounding Tom Cruise’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow. As part of Turner Broadcasting’s partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures for the movie, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will appear in promotions that will run across CNN, TNT, TBS, Adult Swim, TruTV and FunnyorDie, as well as on select Turner Sports broadcasts. Initiatives will include LiveDieRetweet.com, a digital hub that will feature new content related to the movie each day.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The Kentucky Derby won the social race by a nose, according to the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings Weekly Top Ten  Sports Events for the week ending May 4. According to Nielsen, the NBC race saw a unique audience of 6,485,000 with 292,000 Tweets. That bested Mayweather Jr./Maidana, which hit a unique audience of 6,409,000 but drew a huge 1,044,000 Tweets.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

EA Sports‘ upcoming NHL 15 will ring familiar to hockey fans, with the company adding the "most realistic broadcast package to date" to the overhaul. The game will offer a NBC Sports Broadcast Package this time around that will include Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick and Eddie Olczyk in the broadcast booth with TSN analyst Ray Ferraro offering game insights and more than 35,000 lines of new commentary. The look will also feature NHL on NBC graphics and branding and "real life broadcast integration" that pre-game video commentary. In addition, voting for the EA SPORTS NHL 15 Cover Vote Campaign is now underway at NHL.com/CoverVote.

Goal.com drew a record numbers of users in April. The PERFORM Group-owned property recorded over 1 billion page views from over 53 million unique users across all platforms, notching a y-t-y increase of 50%. In addition, mobile users rose by 93% in the past 12 months and now account for 58% of visits.
 
Sports and Entertainment crowdfunding platform Alchemy Global formally launched with the closing of its investment round. Investors/advisors now include Greg Norman, Jim Courier, and Boris Becker, among others.
