IN THE NEWS
Four, count them, four Game of Thrones spinoff series are in the works at HBO as the tentpole series begins preparations for the final send off after eight seasons. Four writers have signed deals with HBO to join Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin to develop the spinoffs. No details yet on whether they will be of the prequel, sequel or companion series variety. The current GoT creative team are finishing the upcoming seventh season, and laying foundation for the final season 8.
Don’t be #sad. Alec Baldwin will revive his Donald Trump impersonation to NBC’s Saturday Night Live on the May 13 and May 20 episodes; the latter date is the SNL finale.
CBS Q1 numbers bested analyst predictions, aided by a cocktail of one-time tax benefits and writedowns, and rising retrans fees. The company reported a net loss of $252 million, down from a $473 million profit during the same period last year. “Retransmission consent and reverse compensation led the way in Q1, growing 28 percent,” said CEO Les Moonves. Retrans contributed to a 17 percent increase in affiliate and subscription fee revenue, which also benefited from its subscription services, CBS All Access and Showtime OTT, he noted. CBS didn’t break out an ad sales number for the network, but Moonves said he’s looking forward the the Upfront season, “where we’re confident advertisers will once again place great value on the No. 1 television network in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.”
Viacom Q2 earnings topped investor projections, largely on the success of its Paramount theatrical, home entertainment and licensing division, with reported revenue of $3.26 billion vs. an estimated $3.025 billion. CEO Bob Bakish has made moves to turn around the company’s cable business, with a focus on six “flagship” brands: Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, Comedy Central, BET and Paramount.
AMC Networks topped Wall Street estimates for its quarterly earnings. The company reported an expected drop in network ad sales, down 6.2 percent, but CEO Josh Sapan depicted the company as a producer of content as well as an owner of channels – and urged investors to keep both sides of the coin in mind. AMC Studios’ production business “will make us important for the ecosystem,” Sapan said. “Our diversification with a focus on key content is ultimately the way for us to grow, and grow sustainably.”
