Streaming devices aren’t detracting from TV viewing time, according to a new report from the Council for Research Excellence. A follow-up study conducted a year after households purchased new media technology found that smart TVs stimulated group viewing, and most households increased their streaming consumption, either as additional total viewing time or as a replacement for live TV viewing. What’s the takeaway for content providers? “It’s a cliche, but it’s true: Content is king,” Brad Adgate, chair of CRE’s Digital Research Committee and senior vice president, research, Horizon Media, tells Cynopsis. “Consumers are screen agnostic and will seek out content, but there has to be a compelling reason to watch it. If you’re watching great content, you’re not going to be on other devices, you’re not going to be inattentive. And cut as many content deals as you can.”
President Barack Obama will be a guest on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman tonight. It’s his third appearance as POTUS; his first appearance was as an Illinois senator in 2004. Meanwhile, over at ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, “Mash Up Monday” unites REO Speedwagon and Imagine Dragons.
Saturday night’s 12-round battle between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiano could be the richest payday in PPV history, with $400 million in revenues on HBO and Showtime. High demand caused service outages in much of the country, forcing a delay of the match.
HBO picked up pilot Brothers in Atlanta to series. Created by and starring Diallo Riddle and Bashir Alahuddin and produced by Lorne Michaels, comedy is centered on two best friends/struggling entertainers.
Discovery picked up reality series Naked and Afraid for season three. Sophomore run launched April 19 with 2.2 P25-54, up 32 percent versus last season’s premiere, and pulled in 3.5 million total viewers, up 29 percent.
Travel’s Breaking Borders has moved from 9p to 11p Sundays. Series follows a journalist and a chef as they travel to conflict zones to break bread and explore divisive issues with people on opposing sides.
