IN THE NEWS

Oprah Winfrey will star in as well as executive produce The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, greenlit by HBO Films, about a poor black farmer whose cells were taken without her knowledge and used to make major discoveries in medical research. Winfrey’s Harpo Films acquired the book rights in 2010 and will produce along with Your Face Goes Here Entertainment and Cine Mosaic. Filming begins this summer.

An analysis of the top seven MVPDs yields year-over-year trends more troubling than some recent earnings reports would suggest, said Richard Greenfield, managing director and media analyst at BTIG, in a blog post. “We believe if the video subscriber trends of the past six-months continue throughout 2016, video subscribers could fall by over 600,000 in 2016 compared to the 48,000 subscribers lost by the top seven MPVDs in 2015 and the 393,000 video sub net adds in 2014,” wrote Greenfield. Does he believe heads are in the sand? “My point was that many were writing that this past quarter showed all was fine, when a closer analysis shows the same trends are continuing if not accelerating,” Greenfield tells Cynopsis. “I think everyone is just praying the secular decline is slow enough for a while.”

Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan had a good excuse for skipping the Daytime Emmy Awards Show, held Sunday in LA – and it wasn’t due to any lingering bad feelings over ABC/Strahan’s surprise announcement that he’s decamping for Good Morning America. The winners in the best entertainment talk show host category explained Monday on Live With Kelly and Michael that until they started receiving congratulatory emails, they weren’t aware the (non-televised) event in L.A. was taking place – and in any case they wouldn’t have been able to trek cross-country from their NYC base. Strahan’s exit date is May 13.

Talk show The Preachers, starring four outspoken preachers, will have a three-week summer test run on Fox-owned TV stations in New York and LA starting July 11, with more stations to come. (The Real and Bethenny had similar starts.) Bill Geddie (The View) is exec producing. ‘“After The View, I figured I’d never do another panel show, but these preachers knocked me off my feet,” said Geddie. “They’re not just another set of talking heads yakking about the events of the day; they bring real-world experience as pastors and counselors.”

More Oprah: Studio audience chairs from The Oprah Winfrey Show will be up for auction starting Thursday, May 5 at 3p, five years after the Queen of Daytime’s final episode in 2011. Preview is on oprah.screenbid.com; proceeds benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation.

DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse HD subscribers will get HDNet Movies for free May 12-18, part of a preview of DirecTV’s “HD Extra Pack” and U-Verse’s “HD Premium Tier.” On the sked: marathons of Stephen King, Slap Shot and Star Trek movies.

Scandal star Kerry Washington is expecting her second child with husband Nnamdi Asomugha. During Washington’s pregnancy with her first child, during season three, the drama’s episode order was cut from 22 to 18. One option this time around, reports TVLine, is delaying the show’s season six return until midseason.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Snapchat is headed to Rio. NBC struck a deal with the social media service, which will offer highlights of happenings via its Live Stories. “The Live Stories will allow thousands of Snapchatters attending select U.S. Olympic Team Trial competitions and the Rio Games to contribute through photo and video Snaps to one collective, Snapchat-curated story,” said the net. Snapchat is the first app maker to reach an agreement with NBC for shared rights to the Olympics, and will split revenue from ads running alongside Games videos. The move is expected to boost interest in the Games among young viewers who tend to follow news from smartphones and websites, not television.

A survey of advertiser and agency execs indicates that ad spending on digital programming has more than doubled over the past three years, with dollars siphoned from TV budgets for 72 percent of total digital video and 64 percent for original digital video. The release of the study for the Interactive Advertising Bureau, conducted by Advertiser Perceptions from March 14-25, coincides with the start of Newfronts.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Hulu is hoping up to serve a skinny bundle of live-streamed broadcast and pay-TV channels, reports the Wall Street Journal. Co-owned by Disney, Fox and Comcast, Hulu would license programming from ABC, ESPN, Disney, Fox, Fox News, FX and Fox sports channels for a possible launch early next year (no word on NBCUNi nets). More to come – Hulu’s upfront is tomorrow morning at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Hot to trot: Former figure skater Johnny Weir will wear a Tweet-powered brooch during NBC’s coverage of the Kentucky Derby this year, in the shape of a small horse. The more conversation that’s generated by Weir’s hat, the more the horse will gallop and light up (hashtag: #WatchMeNeighNeigh). The 142nd Run for the Roses airs Saturday, May 7 at 4p.
