Joy Reid is taking over Melissa Harris-Perry’s MSNBC timeslot, effective May 7. Reid is set to host a new weekend program on Saturdays and Sundays at 10a, the timeslot formerly held byMHP, hosted by Harris-Perry, who left in February after a falling out with management. “Melissa did a show that was incredibly valuable,” said Reid. “Instead of trying to replace it, we will fill the space with something new, something compelling and something that adds to the conversation.” Harris-Perry’s beef with MSNBC had to do with pre-emptions and loss of editorial control.

WWE promoter Paul Heyman is getting ready to take viewers inside his “ingeniously dysfunctional” New York City advertising and marketing firm, Looking4Larry Agency. According to TheWrap, Heyman has teamed with Left/Right Productions on the unscripted series, which came about after a Yahoo Sports documentary on Heyman and his team went viral during “WrestleMania 32” week. 
PBSMind of a Chef and CBSThe Young and the Restless were the big winners  each show winning five awards apiece – at The 43rd Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Friday. Mind of a Chef’s Gabrielle Hamilton and David Kinch landed the trophy for culinary host, while The Young and the Restless scored wins for lighting and art direction. The syndicated Judge Judy won the case for legal/courtroom drama, while PBS’ Sesame Street took was named best preschool children’s series.

The 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were handed out Sunday night in LA. Big winners include General Hospital for Best Drama Series, The Talk for Best Entertainment Talk Show, CBS News Sunday Morning for Best Morning Program- News, The Price Is Right for Best Game Show, Sea Rescue for Best Children’s Series and Judge Judy for Best Legal/Courtroom Program.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The TV adaptation of The Wheel of Time is moving forward. Harriet McDougal, the widow of the novel series author Robert Jordan, announced that a “major studio” is bringing the project to the small screen. “Wanted to share with you exciting news about ‘The Wheel of Time,’” McDougal wrote on Google+. “Legal issues have been resolved. ‘The Wheel of Time’ will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio.”

Fusion is partnering with The Onion to develop a weekly television series based on its spinoff site, TheA.V. Club, reports Deadline. The show is expected to debut later this year and will offer select pop culture content, including recommendations on film, TV and other entertainment.

Eli Jorne is exiting Fox comedy series Son of Zorn over creative differences. Jorne co-created the project with Reed Agnew and had served as co-showrunner. The move leaves Sally McKenna as the lone showrunner. Production of the series won’t be affected.

Fusion premieres TRICKED: Sex Trade in America on Sunday, May 1 at 8p. The documentary takes an inside look at sex trafficking across the country.

The never-before-seen extended film cut of American Masters – Janis: Little Girl Blue premieres Tuesday, May 3 at 8p on PBS (check local listings). The documentary features archival performance footage and new interviews with Janis Joplin‘s sister Laura and musicians influenced by the singer.

The Voice’s Season 8 winner, Sawyer Fredericks, is returning the NBC series on Tuesday, May 3 at 8p to perform his new Pharrell Williams-produced single, 4 Pockets. The night will also feature the Joe Jonas-led group DNCE.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Drew and Jonathan Scott go head-to-head in Las Vegas for HGTV’s fourth season of Brother vs. Brother, premiering Wednesday, June 1 at 9p. The six-episode series follows the twins as they compete to buy, renovate and sell a Vegas home, each with $500,000 to spend.

American Heroes Channel’s America: Facts vs. Fiction: Bonus Round returns on Saturday, May 7 at 10p. New series Inside Secret Societies, which explores some of the most secretive and dangerous global underworld societies, bows Wednesday, May 4 at 10p.

Syfy has set sophomore premiere dates for two series. Killjoys returns Friday, July 1 at 9p, followed by Dark Matter at 10p.

CASTING

Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire)is set to star in an episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror reboot.

Kristen Hager (Being Human) has been tapped to play Joan Kennedy in Reelz miniseries The Kennedy’s: After Camelot, the net’s follow-up to 2011’s The Kennedys. The four-hour project bows in spring 2017.

The Office alum John Krasinski has signed for the title role in Jack Ryan, the series based on Tom Clancy’s popular CIA hero. Project is set at Amazon through Paramount TV.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Entertainment-tech company Rovi has acquired TiVo, the company that launched one of the first digital video recorders in 1999, for approximately $1.1 billion in cash and stock. Following the deal’s closing Rovi will adopt TiVo as its new company name.  “The combined capabilities of TiVo and Rovi place us in a tremendous position to extend services across platforms and to a customer base that includes traditional, over-the-top and emerging players across the globe,” said Rovi CEO Tom Carson. “By working together, Rovi and TiVo will revolutionize how consumers experience media and entertainment and at the same time build value for our stockholders.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is going straight to series at Hulu. Drama from MGM Television is based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling novel. Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) will star.

Netflix has issued a series order for The Punisher, an offshoot of Marvel’s Daredevil and based on the vigilante character introduced in Season 2. John Bernthal (The Walking Dead) will reprise his role of Frank Castle, a vengeful military vet who brings his lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen. It marks the streaming net’s sixth Marvel show.

Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane, will helm an episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror reboot. Created and written by Charlie Booker, the series explores themes of contemporary techno-paranoia.

Netflix sitcom The Ranch has been renewed for a 20-episode, second season. Thank Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson and Sam Elliott, who made the announcement together via Twitter, for the news.

RATINGS

The Odd Couple posted growth in A18-49 for the second consecutive week to a new season high, according to Nielsen preliminary Live+SD ratings for Thursday. The CBS show averaged a 1.8 in A18-49, up 6 percent from last week’s previous season high of 1.7, and was first in viewers (8.40 million) and A25-54 (2.6). The Odd Couple is up 20 percent in A18-49 since its April 7 season premiere.
In April, Velocity’s primetime delivery climbed 16 percent in P18-49, up 10 percent in P25-54, up 11 percent in M18-49 and up 15 percent in M18-34, while Total Day delivery jumped up 18 percent in P18-49, up 15 percent in P25-54, up 7 percent in P18-34, up 22 percent in M18-34 and up 12 percent in Households. 

The finale of Univision telenovela Pasion y Poder reached 5.2 million Total Viewers 2+, who tuned in to all or part of the three-hour broadcast that aired Thrusday from 8p to 11p. The telecast averaged 3.1 Million total viewers 2+, 1.5 million A18-49 and 746,000 young A18-34, making Univision the No. 2 broadcast network for the entire night among young A18-34.

Science Channel set Primetime records in 2Q16 for its highest rated and most watched April ever among A25-54, Men 25-54/18-49, Women 25-54 and Total Viewers P2+, no exclusions, in L+3. Programming highlights included NASA’s Unexplained Files on March 29 breaking into the network’s Top 10 most watched telecasts of all time (#10), averaging 851,000 Total Viewers P2+, with the full third season of the series averaging 712,000 Total Viewers P2+ (up 93 percent above Science Channel’s Primetime average) and 301,000 A25-54 (up 87 percent). The second season of Impossible Engineering averaged 490,000 Total Viewers P2+ (up 33 percent above Science Channel’s Primetime average) and 128,000 among Men 25-54 (up 26 percent).

ID celebrated its best April ever in Prime delivery among P2+, HH, P25-54, W25-54 and P18-49, maintaining its position as a top 10 network (#9 slot) in ad-supported cable for Prime year-to-date delivery of W25-54. ID also finished out April as the #2 network for women in total day among all ad-supported cable. Highlights for the month included See No Evil (1.303 million P2+), Unusual Suspects (1.235 million P2+) and On the Case with Paula Zahn (1.215 million P2+).The season seven premiere of Disappeared, after a three year hiatus, was the series’ highest ever for P2+ (1.054 million) and HH (886,000).

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49viewersThursdaywith1.9/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS grabbed the top spot at 8p with The Big Bang Theory and Odd Couple combining for 2.6/10, followed by ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy with 2.0/7. At 9p, CBS’ Mom and 2 Broke Girls combined for the lead with 1.7/6. ABC’s Scandal was close behind with 1.6/5. Telemundo’s Billboards 16 topped at 10p with 1.1/4; ABC’s Catch was #2 with 1.0/3
