05.02.14 Good morning. It’s Friday, May 2, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN laid out early college football plans for the SEC Network, which will carry a game featuring every football team in the Southeastern Conference within the first four weeks of the 2014 season. The first 16 games include a home game from all 14 SEC football stadiums with eight SEC schools opening their 2014 seasons on the channel. Opening week includes the previously announced Thursday night doubleheader featuring Texas A&M/South Carolina and Temple/Vanderbilt. Aug 30 will see Tennessee-Martin/Kentucky at noon, Arkansas/Auburn at 4p, Southern Mississippi/Mississippi State at 7:30p while Utah State/Tennessee takes place on Aug. 31 at 7p. The following week, on Sept. 6, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M make home appearances on the newborn network.
NBC Sports Group goes neck-deep in its annual Kentucky Derby blitz today, leading in to the 140th running of the famed race on NBC on Saturday starting at 4p. As part of its ‘Big Event Strategy,’ focusing on the food, fashion, celebrity and entertainment from the event, programming is set to include: TODAY’s Al Roker reporting live from Churchill Downs this morning, while Weekend TODAY anchor Dylan Dreyer reports live from Churchill Downs on Saturday. On Weather Channel, during Wake up With Al this morning, Roker and Stephanie Abrams report live from Churchill Downs on the latest conditions, while Sam Champion will be on site Friday during AMHQ with Sam Champion. CNBC will see Squawk on the Street feature an interview with Brown-Forman Master Distiller Chris Morris today on the Derby’s $1,000 mint julep; and Fast Money Halftime Report features Churchill Downs CEO Bob Evans as a guest. E! News has a first-look at this year’s Derby fashion from the red carpet on Saturday. Race day will also see derby picks from Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen.

Minor League Baseball is making a play for a national audience, inking a deal with CBS Sports Network to carry the Game of the Week through the 2014 season. Contests will run through early August, running on Thursdays throughout May with the schedule set to include games ranging from Single-A to Triple-A. Dick Gabriel anchors coverage with Doug Flynn.
April ranked as the most-watched regular season month in the history of MLB Network, with viewership gains across its studio programming and game schedule. The channel saw an average of 253,000 viewers in prime time and 126,000 total day viewers, according to Nielsen for spikes of 30% and 48% over equitable numbers in 2013. Year-to-year time period upticks included: High Heat with Christopher Russo growing 83%; MLB Now up 30%; Intentional Talk rising 68%; MLB Tonight climbing 39% and game telecasts marking a 15% spike.
With the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs complete, NBC Sports reports that the trio of NBC, NBCSN and CNBC combined to average 752,000 viewers for the 46 opening round NHL games. That is up 57% over first round numbers from 2013. The most-watched cable game of round was Game 7 between the Rangers and Flyers on Wednesday night. The game, which was blacked out in the local markets, averaged 1.12 million viewers.
Speaking of which, the Rangers game on MSG Networks scored a 3.70 Nielsen rating for the channel to rank as the top-rated cable program in New York in the key Adult 25-54 demographic, and a 5.00 Nielsen rating among men 25-54, making it the most watched broadcast/cable program among men 25-54 in the market. Overall, Game 7 notched a 5.51 rating, becoming the best-rated hockey game on MSG in two years.
ESPN has its matchups for the expanded ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods this year. The series will be played over three days from December 1-3 with 14 games in the mix thanks to the debuts of Maryland and Rutgers as members of the Big Ten, and Louisville with the ACC. Day 1 will see Nebraska/Florida State and Rutgers/Clemson. Dec. 2 offers Syracuse/Michigan, Ohio State/Louisville, Pittsburgh/Indiana, NC State/Purdue, Illinois/Miami and Minnesota/Wake Forest. The final day pits Duke/Wisconsin, Michigan State/Notre Dame; Iowa/North Carolina, Virginia/Maryland, Georgia Tech/Northwestern and Virginia Tech/Penn State.
Univision Deportes unveiled its talent roster for the World Cup 2014, planning 24-hour coverage for 31 days across all of its broadcast and digital platforms, including live telecasts and streaming of all 64 matches plus live pre- and post-game commentary and reporting from Brazil’s 12 tournament cities. Univision’s play-by-play coverage and commentary will include Diego Balado, Enrique "El Perro" Bermudez, Felix "El Gato" Fernandez, Jesus "El Profe" Bracamontes, Jorge Perez Navarro, Jose Luis Lopez Salido, Luis Omar Tapia and Pablo "La Torre de Jalisco" Ramirez.
Fantasy Sports Television Network is entering a new partnership with Bloomberg Sports which will include a daily 30-minute show on fantasy and sports analytics, dubbed Bloomberg Sports Stats Insights. The series will be hosted by Shannon Sommerville and offer a daily look at the numbers behind all fantasy sports, with features, guests and daily news for both daily and season-long fantasy players and sports fans. The show will officially launch later this quarter.
Spike TV is running four specials leading into Bellator’s May 17th pay-per-view, beginning May 5 with Countdown To Alvarez vs. Chandler III at 11p. The special Unfinished Business: Alvarez vs. Chandler III is slated to run on Wednesday, May 14 at midnight, Rampage vs Mo Winner Takes All hits the screens on May 13 at 11:30p, and Unrivaled: Michael Chandler will be telecast on May 16 at 11p.
EPIX is offering a closer examination of David Ortiz on July 17 at 8p, with its original documentary David Ortiz In the Moment. The special, produced by Relativity Sports in conjunction with Major League Baseball Productions, follows Ortiz’s path from The Dominican Republic to stardom. Previous editions of In the Moment followed Lindsey Vonn and Amar’e Stoudemire and will continue this fall with Dwight Howard.

The Collegiate Licensing Company extended its partnership agreement with Drexel University to continue managing its trademark licensing program. Three additional universities have announced partnerships with IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions: Virginia Tech, University of New Mexico, and University of Southern Mississippi. The trio of schools now gives IMGLTS 29 school partners,
Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff, revealed that the group has launched Extra Yard for Teachers, a philanthropic program supported through the College Football Playoff Foundation designed to honor and support teachers nationally and in the communities that host the College Football Playoff National Championship. ESPN will team with the College Football Playoff Foundation upon launch through both financial support and a commitment to engage in storytelling about the impact of great teachers and mentors in communities.
FOX Sports GO received its first major update since launching last October with v2.0 offering a "redesigned, image-rich user interface that is easier to navigate, as well as personalized program reminders and new settings to control video playback over WiFi." In addition, the iPad version of FOX Sports GO version 2.0 allows users to browse the program schedule up to seven days in advance while watching video.
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association named George ‘Jory’ Macomber Head of School for the USSA TEAM Academy and Vice President, Athlete Career and Education. Macomber will lead the USSA TEAM Academy’s evolution as the leading academic solution for young athletes competing at the world class level while still in high school, while also working with staff to create other opportunities for athletes pursuing educational and professional goals.
