IN THE NEWS
Michelle Wolf told NPR’s Terry Gross she “wouldn’t change a single word” of her headline-making White House Correspondents’ Dinner monologue. “I didn’t want to cater to the room. I wanted to cater to the outside audience, and not betray my brand of comedy,” said Wolf, who drew criticism for making fun of White House press secretary Sarah Sanders’ appearance. Not so, said Wolf. “If there are two people that I actually made fun of their looks on Saturday it was Mitch McConnell and Chris Christie,” noted Wolf, “and no one is jumping to their defense.”
The judge in the AT&T versus Department of Justice trial over AT&T’s $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner said a verdict will be delivered on June 12. U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Leon scheduled a hearing for that day, during which he will announce his decision.
NewFronts news: Disney and Twitter struck an advertising and content deal that calls for Disney to create live shows and advertising opportunities for the social networking service from across the Disney portfolio. “Through this new agreement, participants from across the company will have the opportunity to create experiences unique to Twitter that will extend their brands in meaningful ways,” said Justin Connolly, EVP, affiliate sales & marketing, Disney and ESPN Media Networks. “This includes compelling live content …that can reach and appeal to all types of audiences at scale on their platform.”
There’s a large gap in perceived value between TV services and traditional cable, satellite and fiber optic services, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s annual “What’s TV Worth” report. MVPD customers pay, on average, $33 more per month for the TV services they subscribe to than they think is reasonable, while among those subscribing to Virtual MVPDs, the actual versus reasonable difference is just $17. And 75% of SVOD subscribers and 68% of virtual MVPD customers describe their subscription as a “good” or “excellent” value, compared to 46% of traditional pay TV subscribers.
“Aggregation of content is clearly one way for pay TV providers to add value for their subscribers, but we also know how much consumers dislike the idea of paying for content they never watch,” said Peter Fondulas, principal at Hub and co-author of the study. “As long consumers continue to view only a small portion of the networks they get in their MVPD bundle – as we’ve seen in other research – they’re likely to continue to feel their pay TV subscription offers less than optimal value.”
Fox News correspondent Will Carr has jumped to ABC News. It’s a homecoming of sorts – Carr got his start in news as an intern at ABC affiliate WSB-TV.
According to Carol Burnett, the comedy project she was to star in for ABC, exec produced by Amy Poehler, was snuffed out due to network meddling – a situation she’d never encountered during the run 1967-1978 run of The Carol Burnett Show on CBS. “They never even asked to see the script,” Burnett told the New York Post. When it came to her recent pilot, Burnett said, “At this time of my life, do I want to face a bunch of network or advertising people who want to make their opinions known? I just don’t want to be around that.” Presumably she doesn’t have to in Netflix’s upcoming A Little Help with Carol Burnett, premiering May 4.
CBS took home the most trophies at the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, with 20. NBC’s Days of Our Lives nabbed five awards, including best drama series.
John Goodman (Roseanne) and Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum) have hopped aboard Netflix and BBC drama Black Earth Rising, about a woman, rescued as a child during the Rwandan genocide who as an adult takes on a case prosecuting an African militia leader.
