IN THE NEWS
Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and studios met over the weekend to try and avert a strike before the contract between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires tomorrow. Earlier this month, an overwhelming majority of the union’s members voted to authorize a walk-out if an agreement couldn’t be reached. Issues include the guild’s health plan, writers being paid less for shorter episodes, exclusivity, workplace protections and paid family leave.
The original talent competition broke the mold (outrageous acts, worthless prizes), and it looks like its reboot will, too. British comic Tommy Maitland has been tapped to host ABC revival The Gong Show, produced by Will Arnett. Or so ABC says – the “comedic legend” is reportedly a fictional character being played by Mike Myers. Maitland is alive, at least, on Twitter, posting on Friday, “This is Tommy and I’m live on the Internets. I’m hosting The Gong Show on ABC next month. Bloody marvelous!” Chuck Barris, who died in March, created, produced and hosted the first incarnation; new version premieres Thursday, June 22 at 10p.
Political analyst Nicholle Wallace, former communications director for George W. Bush, has been handed the 4p hour on MSNBC, an expansion of a politics-focused block that includes MTP Daily, For the Record and Hardball. Steve Kornacki, who has been hosting MSNBC Live with Steve Kornacki in the time slot, will be part of the new show. Wallace joined NBC News and MSNBC last year.
Politics is also the hot topic on The Fox News Specialists, airing live weeknights starting today at 5p. Eric Bolling (Cashin’ In), Katherine Timpf (The Greg Gutfeld Show) and Eboni K. Williams (The Five) will co-host. Show kicks off with Bolling interviewing President Donald Trump on his first business day after his first 100 days. Specialists replaces The Five, moved to 9p, in the time slot as part of the scheduling scramble following the sudden exit of Bill O’Reilly.
The Daily Show
’s Hasan Minhaj got a thumbs up from critics for his job hosting the Donald Trump-less White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday
night.
“Only in America can a first-generation Indian-American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the
president
,” noted Minhaj.
In TBS’s Correspondents’ Dinner Full Frontal special on Saturday, Samantha Bee assured reporters she would treat them well, adding, “At a later date, I will get Mexico to pay for your drinks.”
Meanwhile, at a rally in Pennsylvania marking his first 100 days in office, President Trump told the crowd,
“A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in our nation’s capital right now. They are gathered together for the White House Correspondents’ dinner – without the President. And I could not possibly be more thrilled than to be more than 100 miles away from Washington’s swamp, spending my evening with all of you and with a much, much larger crowd and much better people.”
A hacker released season 5 episodes of Orange Is the New Black on file-sharing site Pirate Bay, after Netflix refused to give in to extortion demands. Acknowledged Netflix, “A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved.”
Release date on the streamer had been set for June 9. OITNB might be just the beginning – the hacker tweeted it also obtained shows from ABC, Fox, IFC and Nat Geo.
MTV
canceled well-reviewed but low-rated Sweet/Vicious after one season. The dark comedy was MTV’s lowest-rated scripted series, averaging 180,000 viewers among A18-49.
Education and entertainment-focused HITN will be the first Spanish-language network in the U.S. to air auto series Top Gear. Seasons 14-16 start Tuesday, May 2, in English with Spanish subtitles.
Netflix
hopes a month-long immersive exhibit launching Sunday, May 7 will tilt Emmy voters in favor of its offerings. The 240,000-square-foot space will be located in Beverly Hills, open to industry professionals by invitation only. In addition to screenings, events will include panel discussions and special performances.
With over 283 million votes, the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards racked up its best number across six polling platforms. Top winners included Justin Bieber, Kelsea Ballerini and Alessia Cara.

NAB NOTES |
There was “great excitement” around ATSC 3.0 at this year’s gathering, said NAB EVP/CTO Sam Matheny. “I think you will see more stations coming on the air with ATSC 3.0 this year on an experimental basis, which will lay the groundwork for stations to go on the air in 2018 or 2019.” And the days of tutorials on the next generation of over-the-air TV appear to be at an end. “I spent the whole convention in a closed meeting room across the street at a hotel talking to CEOs of the major groups and networks and explaining what ATSC 3.0 is,” said Advanced Television Systems Committee president Mark Richer, of years past. “We don’t have to do that anymore.”
Opportunities offered by the cloud was a hot topic during a panel that included Al Jazeera, Sinclair and Nextstar, who anticipated it would offer scale and focus, helping break news more quickly.
“In five years, we will be using the cloud to deliver content,” predicted Del Parks, SVP and chief technology officer at Sinclair. “As we move into ATSC 3.0, which can target everyone over the air with individual content, we have to be in that business. You won’t be in that business having a server in your master control room playing out one channel.”
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Showtime
set summer premiere dates for Ray Donovan, launching its fifth season Sunday, August 6 at 9p, and Episodes, returning for its fifth and final run on Sunday, August 20 at 10p. On the flip side, the finale of Showtime’s Twin Peaks will air with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, September 3.
Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta
debuts Thursday, May 25 at 10p. WE tv reality series spin-off focuses on the kids of hip hop royalty.
Amazon
renewed Z: The Beginning of Everything for season 2. Bio-series starring Christina Ricci is based on the life of Zelda Fitzgerald.
COMING UP
Fast & Furious
will receive the Generation Award at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. It
will be the first time that a film franchise will be honored instead of an individual actor. Furious star and Producer Vin Diesel will accept the award alongside franchise co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster during the ceremony airing Sunday, May 7 at 8p.
Ever wondered how to use a heel-o-matic? A Texas Cowboy Hall of Famer demonstrates how to employ tools and improve horsemanship in Ride Smart with Craig Cameron, premiering today at 3p on RFD-TV.
Prince Albert
is interviewed for Lifestyle in Monaco, a documentary premiering on TV5monde USA on Thursday, May 18 at 9p.
CASTING
CBS All Access
’ Star Trek: Discovery has added to its cast. New recruits include Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful), Rekha Sharma (The 100), Kenneth Mitchell (Jericho), Clare McConnell (Dim the Fluorescents) and Damon Runyan (Suits).
The Big Bang Theory
’s Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch set deals for new 2-year contracts, for seasons 11 and 12. Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, who struck their own agreements in February, each took a $100,000-per-episode pay cut to help get their co-stars a hefty raise.
ADVERTISING
Haircare brand SheaMoisture drew sharp criticism from black social media users (aka “Black Twitter”) for an ad focused on “hair hate.” A video posted on SheaMoisture’s Facebook site was intended to send a message of inclusivity, as it attempted to broaden its reach from its core base of women of color, by including white and light-skinned women. But many found that offensive because, as a writer on BET’s web site points out, “We know good hair is for everyone but that is why companies that cater specifically to Black women need to exist – because so many of the products out there do not.” (“Have a Pepsi,” joked one tweeter, referring to another well-intentioned but tone deaf spot.) SheaMoisture pulled the ad, saying on Facebook, “We really f-d this up. Please know that our intention was not – and would never be – to disrespect our community.”
With Millennials and Gen Z drawn to companies that make a difference in the world, doing good is also good for business – but making a misstep is all too easy. Nascar
’s “Acceleration Nation” program, designed to get kids engaged in car racing, tapped a 14-year-old to direct a new ad promoting the initiative, which includes math and science learning materials for schools. In the spot, created with 77 Ventures, lab coated kids teach Nascar drivers about the science behind speed.
“With STEM, a lot of the principles in Nascar apply to what they’re already learning in school, so it’s a natural tie-in for us,” Nascar CMO Jill Gregory told Adweek. “Putting racing into curriculums makes it more interesting to kids. It’s a benefit for them and their teachers, and it’s a benefit for us to get Nascar in front of audiences who might not be exposed to it.”
SOCIAL GOOD
Disney|ABC Television Group
has partnered with FosterMore to raise awareness around and support the work of foster families and others working to improve the lives of young people in foster care, during May, National Foster Care Month. Tent-pole events include #HackFosterCareLosAngeles, dedicated to solving five key challenges with the foster care system; Foster Mother’s Day, an event celebrating foster families; and the premiere of the FosterMore public service announcement, which will feature real kids and adults who have been a part of the foster care system.
GOING GLOBAL
Buccaneer Media
inked an agreement with TV and film director Baltasar Kormakur and his production company RVK Studios to create an English language version of Iceland’s The Reykjavik Confessions.
Netflix
greenlit season 2 of German series Dogs of Berlin, focused on Berlin police detectives embroiled in underworld territorial battles, for launch in 2018.
Multi-platform net Vibrant TV added 50 hours of new reality programming from UK distributor DRG, including the new series Snake Boss and Honey, I Bought the House as well as more seasons of Don’t Tell the Bride and The Yorkshire Vet.
