NBC is releasing all 13 episodes of thriller Aquarius on NBC.com, the NBC app and other on-demand platforms right after its Thursday, May 28 linear premiere. “With Aquarius we have the opportunity to push some new boundaries to give our audience something no broadcast network has done before,” said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. “We are fully aware of how audiences want to consume multiple episodes of new television series faster and at their own discretion.” Both linear and digital options will have limited commercial interruptions.
Roots, a remake of the 1977 phenomenon, is a go – and going big. The event series will be simulcast on A+E Networks’ History, A&E and Lifetime. Will Packer (Ride Along) exec produces, and original Roots cast member LeVar Burton is onboard as co-exec producer. “There is a huge audience of contemporary young Americans who do not know the story of Roots or its importance,” said Burton. “I believe now is the right time to tell this story so that we can all be reminded of its impact on our culture and identity.” Premiere is slated for 2016.
Nielsen struck a deal with Roku to measure viewing data and audience demos across its devices, allowing advertisers to measure, guarantee and report campaign audience delivery through the Roku platform. “Cross-platform audience measurement is critical for advertisers looking to leverage the trend of increasing video consumption,” said NielsenGlobal Watch Product Leadership EVP Megan Clarken. “By working with Roku to measure live streaming and on-demand advertising on its platform, we can gain great insights into viewing and expand the measurement and delivery of Total Audience Campaign and Content insights for all of our clients.”
Starz wrapped 1Q15 with 23.7 million subscribers, up 400,000, according to first quarter financials. “The reception we are seeing for Starz Original series bodes very well for our efforts to fortify distribution relationships and to build Starz’s presence overseas,” said CEO Chris Albrecht during an earnings call.
The subject of Starz’ Flesh and Bone also came up during the call. The decision to turn the expensive dance drama into a limited series “is an out of ordinary event,” said Albrecht. “It was just not sustainable on a seasonal basis [but we] still felt we wanted to get it in there.”
Syfy’s Helix won’t make it to season three. The series premiered to 1.82 million viewers, but dropped o 560,000 for season two. Finale aired April 10.
COZI TV is teaming with the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival for the COZI TV Comedy Search, launching today, May 1. The top ten comedians are voted on by viewers, with the winner getting cash, the chance to appear on the network and a trip to Lucy’s hometown of Jamestown, NY to perform in the festival.

FYI greenlit 14 half-hour eps of Food Porn, from Loud TV, with Real Housewife of New York Bethenny Frankel among its exec producers and Michael Chernow, co-owner of The Meatball Shop, as host. “People are obsessed with photographing, sharing and discussing the food they eat on social media,” said Jana Bennett, president of FYI and LMN. “FYI will be capturing this convergence of mouth-watering food and social trends in a unique and entertaining format.” Production begins immediately.

E! picked up a pilot for scripted drama The Arrangement, a Cinderella story with a Hollywood twist written by Emmy winner Jonathan Abrahams (Mad Men). Abrahams will also exec produce the project along with Jimmy Fox of Objective Productions USA. Stephen Lambert and Eli Holzman of All3Media America will also serve as exec producers; Universal Cable Productions is set to produce.
Production began this week in Vancouver for UP’s first original scripted drama series, Ties That Bind. Ten-ep hybrid procedural/family drama from Reel One Entertainment is slated for an August premiere.
Animal Planet promises an immersive experience “unlike any docu-series before,” with eight-part “special documentary event” The Last Alaskans. Centered on the final four families left standing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which prohibits new human occupation, Alaskans premieres on Monday, May 25 at 10p, followed by new eps Sundays at 8p.
Nikki Dinki and Bobby Deen set out to recreate guilty pleasure foods in a healthier way in Cooking Channel’s Junk Food Flip, premiering Tuesday, June 2 at 9p. First stop: St. Augustine, Florida’s Gas Full Service Restaurant, where Dinki and Deen tackle the Jalapeno Popper Burger: two beef patties stuffed with cream cheese, cheddar cheese and jalapenos then deep fried.
Season three of Bravo’s Married to Medicine debuts Sunday, June 7 at 9p, moving to its regular Sunday-at-8p slot the following week. The show’s sophomore run averaged 1.2 million P18-49 and nearly 2.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
Smithsonian Channel premieres two-part David Attenborough’s Rise of Animals – Triumph of the Vertebrates on Wednesday, May 13 at 8p and 9p. The series from Atlantic Productions traces evolutionary advances.
Showtime’s ready for summer, with a slate including season four of Inside Comedy, premiering Tuesday, May 5 at 11p; third seasons of Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, launching Sunday, July 12 at 9p and 10p; documentaries focused on indie filmmaker Richard Linklater (Boyhood); boy band One Direction; NBA star Dennis Rodman’s controversial mission to stage a basketball game between the U.S. and North Korea, and a town that recreates the story of Christ. Comedy specials feature Brad Williams, Alec Mapa, Maz Jobrani and stand-up at the SXSW festival.
TV One’s News One Now broadcasts its first town hall meeting, “State of Emergency: Baltimore and Beyond” on Tuesday, May 5 from 9p-11p. Roland S. Martin hosts. The goal: “To broaden the national discussion on race in America, especially as it relates to the underlying tensions between police and the Black community,” said Martin.
Nosotros Los Nobles (We are the Nobles), the highest-grossing Mexican film of all time, will premiere on Spanish-language movie channel Cinelatino on Sunday, May 3, at 11p. Movie was released in 2013.
A slew of high-profile guests will be on hand for season seven of MTV2’s Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out, premiering Wednesday, June 10 at 11p. To name just a few: Kevin Hart, Jordin Sparks, Shaquille O’Neil, Snoop Dog and Zendaya. “When we taped the new season, the studio audience in New York went crazy,” said Cannon. “I know fans at home will feel the same way.”
Angela Bassett returns to American Horror Story for its Hotel edition, launching in October. Bassett also appeared in Coven and Freak Show.
Genie Francis is returning to ABC soap opera General Hospital, where she first played Laura (as in Luke-and-Laura) in 1976. GH producer Frank Valentini announced the news via Twitter.
James Purefoy (The Following) will play Hap in SundanceTV’s Hap and Leonard, premiering in 2016.
Matt Cedeno (Devious Maids) landed a series regular role in season two of Syfy drama Z Nation, premiering in the fall.
Josh Stewart (Criminal Minds) and Parker Croft (Once Upon a Time) have joined the cast of HBO miniseries Lewis and Clark, based on the book Undaunted Courage.
Rapper Snoop Dogg guests as Street Dogg on animated series Sanjay and Craig, airing Sunday, May 17 on Nickelodeon.
Viacom announced data-driven ad product Viacom Vantage, aimed at helping advertisers reach custom targets at the program level across MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, Nickelodeon, CMT, Spike, TV Land and Logo.Developed in-house over a year ago, the beta version was piloted with a select group of national partners including Horizon Media.And? “We recognized immediately it was a novel approach that could greatly build upon the effectiveness of our client’s investment,” said Dave Campanelli, SVP, Director of National Television for Horizon. “The results far exceeded our expectations.”
A+E Networks’ Upfront announcements included new events and new series on A&E, History, Lifetime and FYI. Six-part limited series War and Peace, a partnership with The Weinstein Co. and BBC, will be simulcast later this year on Lifetime, A&E and History, the tactic also being used for Roots. Downton Abbey’s Lily James stars. Coming up on A&E: Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit, putting personal trainers to the weight loss test, and The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and Critics’ Choice Television Awards. History launches survival experiment Alone this summer, and has scripted series Boys of 67 in development.
Unreal, a drama about the chaos behind the scenes at a dating show that is the first scripted series from A+E Studios, debuts on Lifetime June 1. Also joining Lifetime is Sing It! (wt), a docu-series about a cappella groups. In the wings at FYI: foodie series What the Fung?!, and spin-off docu-series Married at First Sight: The First Year.

Outdoor Sportsman Group shared Upfront plans for its new Networks division, made up of Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network, at its NYC event Wednesday night. Jason Brist, EVP of ad sales, touted the nets’ unique relationship with their loyal audiences, as well as opportunities to entertain, inform and engage the 130 million-plus active outdoor adventure participants and armchair observers in the U.S. “Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and World Fishing Network viewers are a diverse, passionate, media savvy and receptive segment of American consumers with spending power,” said Brist. “We’ve made dramatic strides in elevating our audience’s experience, on-air, online and on-the-go, and have created smart, ROI-driven marketing opportunities that truly resonate with those that choose to make outdoor pursuits a way of life; you can’t ‘buy around’ our highly engaged audience.”
Alternatives including TV Everywhere and OTT offerings were part of the pitch, as well as a cross-platform solution for ad partners interested in engaging with fans in the digital, mobile and social spaces. Advertisers were also offered the opportunity to tap into Outdoor Sportsman Group’s established Outdoor Sportsman Group Integrated Media arm, including publishing and digital brands like Petersen’s Bowhunting, North American Whitetail and Fly Fisherman, among others. Other integration opportunities include branded entertainment, sponsorships, product placements and stunts. “No other networks offering adventure entertainment can leverage multiple platforms to create powerful, contextual consumer-focused marketing solutions like we can,” said group president and CEO Jim Liberatore.
On an earnings call Thursday, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said the company had sold about 30 percent of its ad inventory, with buying for kids’ programming getting an early start. Dauman described pricing as “robust.”
Discovery Networks International looks at some of the world’s most monumental engineering bloopers in summer series Incredible Engineering Blunders: Fixed. Series from BriteSpark Films debuts across Discovery’s factual channels in over 220 countries in August 2015.
FremantleMedia International announced the first two international sales for No Offence, to Australia’s ABC TV and Danish broadcaster DR. The police procedural, produced by AbbottVision for Channel 4, premieres in the UK on Tuesday, May 5.

The season 2 premiere of Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart delivered a 2.1 HH rating and 2.3 million total viewers, according to Live+3 data. Saturday’s debut out-delivered the season 1 premiere by 25 percent among HHs and 21 percent among total viewers, and boosted Hallmark to be the most-watched and highest-rated network among households and total viewers, outside of sports in the 8-10p time period.
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: ABC won the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 1.9/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. CBS was first at 8p with 2.2/8 for Survivor, followed by a 2.1/8 average for ABC’s The Middle and The Goldbergs. ABC took the lead at 9p with a 2.5/8 average for Modern Family and black-ish, versus 1.8/6 for CBS’s Criminal Minds and NBC’s Chicago PD. NBC landed on top at 10p with 2.1/7 for Law & Order: SVU; ABC and Univision shared second with 1.3/4 for Nashville and Senor de los Cielos.
