PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Genius Brands International launched a new comedy/adventure animated series for kids created by the legendary Stan Lee—his last project. Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a co-production among Genius Brands, Lee’s POW! Entertainment and Schwarzenegger’s Oak Productions. Schwarzenegger, who also serves as exec producer, lends his voice as the lead character. Fabian Nicieza, co-creator of Deadpool, is scripting the series. GBI’s Andy Heyward and POW! president Gil Champion serve as exec producers.
Production is under way on new Starz original series Hightown, from Rebecca Cutter (Gotham), Gary Lennon (Orange Is the New Black, Power) and Jerry Bruckheimer TV. Series, which stars Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire) and James Badge Dale (Hold the Dark, 13 Hours), is a crime drama about fiercely flawed people using whoever and whatever they can to get through the night after a body washes ashore on Labor Day weekend. Hightown is created and written by Cutter, who also exec produces alongside Lennon, Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman (Lucifer, The Amazing Race), KristieAnne Reed (CSI: Cyber, Lucifer) and Ellen Schwartz.

Patrick Spence, who runs Endemol Shine Group-backed Fifty Fathoms and serves as exec producer of Netflix’s upcoming drama The Eddy, is exiting the Endemol Shine Group for ITV Studios. He’ll launch a new scripted studio at the production arm of the UK broadcaster, where he’ll produce premium drama for the UK and international markets.
Herschend Entertainment Studios secured film and TV rights to The Keys to the Kingdom, the best-selling book series penned by Garth Nix. The fantasy story follows 12-year-old Arthur Penhaligon, the reluctant hero and Rightful Heir to the House, which is revealed to be the center of the universe.
Weigel Broadcasting Co. renewed multicast classic TV network MeTV’s inaugural original television series Collector’s Call. MeTV will air an expanded 26-ep run of the series in its second season, slated for a 2020 debut and set to feature host Lisa Whelchel meeting collectors of pop culture memorabilia to give viewers an inside look at collections, ranging from the precious to the priceless.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
On Sunday June 2, Paramount Network will debut Marriage Rescue, a new series that expands the network’s popular Bar Rescue franchise. Marriage Rescue, which also features Jon Taffer, is produced by 3 Ball Entertainment and features Taffer diffusing conflict among newlyweds and couples who’ve been married for decades alike while at a beach resort in the Caribbean.
Putting his unending curiosity and inventiveness to the test, Adam Savage is taking on bigger, badder builds in new eight-ep series Savage Builds, premiering June 12 at 10p on Science Channel.
Netflix dropped a trailer for high school comedy Mr. Iglesias, starring standup comic Gabriel Iglesias, which bows June 21. Iglesias plays Gabe, a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater and works with gifted but misfit kids.
The “Sunday nights on E!” summer programming lineup includes the return of Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian, airing Sunday nights beginning July 7 at 9p, and new series Flip It Like Disick, premiering Sunday, August 4 at 10p, which takes the network into the real estate and luxury renovation space with Scott Disick tackling high-end home flipping and remodeling.
FX dropped the first trailer for season 3 of Snowfall, its crack cocaine drama series that will return July 10, just a few months after the death of its co-creator, director and exec producer, John Singleton. The trailer is set to Run-D.M.C.’s ‘80s anthem It’s Like That.

The Live with Kelly and Ryan desk is going to be more crowded on Thursday, June 13. Filling in for Kelly Ripa will be the Jo Bros triumvirate—Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas. The three will provide an update of their new doc Chasing Happiness, latest album and upcoming tour.
American Masters—Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life premieres Friday, June 14 at 9p on PBS in honor of LGBT Pride Month. The film explores the six-decade career of the playwright and LGBTQ activist, who will receive the Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theater this year.

WarnerMedia Podcast Network is launching of season 2 of Somebody Somewhere, the podcast documentary series hosted by former prosecutor David Payne and former CNN producer Jody Gottlieb. In conjunction with RainStream Media, Somebody Somewhere is the first partnership of its kind for WarnerMedia Podcast Network, with its content independent of any TV, video or digital brand. New season bows Tuesday, June 11 and will be available at WarnerMedia Podcast Network, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, TuneIn and Google Podcasts.
Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller, and the supernatural, will premiere podcast Visitations with Elijah Wood & Daniel Noah on Friday, May 31. From indie production company SpectreVision, series’ first episode features a conversation with Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok) in his LA home. Subsequent eps will be released twice-weekly on Mondays and Fridays. All eps will be made available on Shudder Monday, June 3, exclusively for its members.
KIDS NEWS
PBS Kids announced animated series Elinor Wonders Why, slated to bow Labor Day 2020. Created by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson and produced in partnership with Pipeline Studios, series aims to encourage children to follow their curiosity, ask questions and find answers using science inquiry skills. Main character Elinor, the most observant and curious bunny rabbit in Animal Town, will introduce kids ages 3-5 to science, nature and community through adventures with her friends.
Sketch comedy series All That, Nickelodeon’s longest running live-action series with 171 eps across 10 seasons from 1994-2005, is back—and the network has unveiled the new cast. Filmed in front of a live audience, the reboot, debuting Saturday, June 15 at 8:30p, also will feature musical performances from acts including Daddy Yankee, Ally Brooke and Kane Brown. Cast members are: Ryan Alessi, Reece Caddell. Kate Godfrey, Gabrielle Green, Nathan Janax, Lex Lumpkin and Chinguun Sergelen. In the series premiere, the new cast will be joined by original All That cast members Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg and Josh Server.
The Bezos Family Foundation, home of the Vroom initiative that translates research on children’s brain development into tips for parents, and Fred Rogers Productions are extending their partnership to support Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Under the renewed agreement, Vroom will sponsor the fan- series into 2020 with promotional spots continuing to air on PBS Kids broadcast and digital channels.
Sutikki, co-producer of preschool series Moon and Me, alongside Andrew Davenport’s Foundling Bird and 9 Story Brands, signed Minor Entertainment as the global live entertainment partner for the series. Amscan, Orange Tree Toys, Redan and Whitehouse Leisure also join the slate of licensed partners. Series made its global television premiere on BBC’s CBeebies in the UK in early February 2019 and recently debuted in the US on Universal Kids.
European kids content producer Cottonwood Media appointed Retail Monster as exclusive UK licensing agent for the tween drama series Find Me in Paris.
DIGITAL DATA
NBC yesterday launched free ad-supported news streaming service NBC News Now. Service comprises eight hours of programming on weekday afternoons and evenings from 3-11p. NBC’s jump into the streaming news pond pits it against ABC News Live, CBSN and Fox Nation. The service is unrestricted, and does not require cable authorization.
Hulu SVP/head of advertising sales said 70 percent of its 82 million viewers watch content via its $5.99/month ad-supported plan, vs, the $11.99/month commercial-free plan it offers.
CuriosityStream, the streaming and on-demand destination from Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks, launches its 50th anniversary summer celebration of the lunar landing with the world premiere of original 4K film Return to the Moon on June 13 and kicks off New Moon Mondays beginning June 17.
Henkel’s got2b hair color and styling brand, partnered with production house Shaftesbury to produce short-form series Turning the Tables. At 5 minutes per ep, series is a coming-of-age story set in the DJ-driven world of electronic dance music and features an exclusive mix performed by the characters in the story. First two eps are available on YouTube channel Union&Ace, as well as on got2bhairbyme.com.

Capitol Broadcasting’s WRAL Raleigh, NC, Digital Alert Systems, Triveni Digital and Verance completed an end-to-end broadcaster to receiver test using ATSC 3.0 Advanced Emergency Information, a new technology that enhances broadcasters’ emergency communications and operational capabilities. The test proved robust AEA emergency information could successfully pass through existing ATSC 1.0 over-the-air, cable and satellite paths, as well as OTT platforms and ATSC 3.0 transmissions from a single insertion point. By delivering AEA over cable, satellite and OTT paths, used to receive television service in 80 percent of US households, the reach of these life-saving messages will be boosted 500 percent.
While some technological advances are trends that will fade away, others will alter the marketing industry forever. Peter Yagecic, Director of Technical Projects at Situation, names the hree tech advances he thinks have the potential to “exponentially impact how humans evolve,” in Cynopsis’ new TechFronts News.
Activision teased today’s official Call of Duty announcement with a tweet on the game’s official Twitter account that said, “Going Dark,” accompanied by a video noting the date and time: “May 30 at 10 AM PT”

Italian broadcaster Mediaset, owned by Silvio Berlusconi’s Fininvest, acquired a 9.6 percent stake in German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 for $380 million.
CBC unleashed its 2019-20 programing slate, which includes the launch of Family Feud Canada, hosted by Gerry Dee and the return of Ron MacLean as host and Kurt Browning as head judge for the new season of Battle of the Blades. New original scripted series include spy drama Fortunate Son, set in the social and political chaos of 1968; Canada/New Zealand thriller The Sounds; sketch comedy Tallboyz; and The Trickster, based on the Eden Robinson novels. New factual entertainment includes time-traveling adventure Back in Time for Winter, and Samuel L. Jackson leading blue-chip doc series Enslaved, which traces the history of slavery through underwater archaeology. Additionally, CBC Radio & Audio will launch a new slate of original CBC Podcasts.

In syndication, with the May sweep (April 25 – May 22) winding down, Judge Judy (7.1 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 1% from the week before) captured more than 9.8 million daily viewers and outperformed an until-recently unstoppable Jeopardy! (6.2, up 2%). Judge Judy has shut down all competitors for 42 of the last 45 weeks with the only three misses coming at the buzzer hands of superstar Jeopardy! contestant James Holzhauer. In talk shows Dr Phil (2.8, up 4%) was the sole strip in positive territory, finishing first for 141 weeks in a row. In other dayparts, reports on the life and death of America’s Box-Office Sweetheart of the 50’s and 60’s Doris Day and legendary comedian Tim Conway fueled some of the popular entertainment magazines. Entertainment Tonight (six-week high 2.9, up 4%) set the pace, leading all mags for a third straight week. Access (1.2) held steady at a five-week high and rolled to a tie with TMZ (1.2, down 8%). Daily Mail TV (1.0, up 11%), recently renewed for season three, climbed into a tie with Extra (1.0, down 9%). Elsewhere, Dateline (1.3, up 8%) maintained its strangle-hold on the true crime genre for the 36th week in a row.
