Here’s a record you don’t want to break: The European Union hit Meta with a $1.3 billion privacy fine, the EU’s largest ever, and ordered the company to stop transferring user data across the Atlantic by October. Calling the decision flawed and unjustified, Meta said it would appeal and asked courts to put the decision on hold.
Streaming services’ reliance on scripted programming could mean trouble if the writers’ strike doesn’t end soon. According to data from Diesel Labs, 64% of programming from the nine major streamers released in 2022 was scripted, led by Apple TV with 79% and Netflix, with 76%. Likely least affected by the strike will be discovery+, where just 11% of its titles fell into the scripted category last year.
Cinedigm Corp. is rebranding to Cineverse, part of the company’s evolution into a streaming content and technology company. “We have come a very long way from the Cinedigm of 10 years ago, which specialized in digital innovation within the cinema industry,” said Chris McGurk, Chairman and CEO of Cineverse. “We officially turn the page to become Cineverse, a pure-play business in the exciting and dynamic streaming content and technology space.”
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment transactional VOD service Redbox had its largest revenue week in the company’s history with its debut of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” “It’s clear that movie fans have a voracious, pent-up demand for big new release movies, which is something we’ve long expected,” said William J. Rouhana Jr., CEO of CSSE. “Starting this week, we will have major releases coming to our kiosks every week through the end of the year.”
Disney’s third and final round of planned layoffs is underway, reports Deadline. About 700 positions are expected to be impacted as the company grapples with changing media and economic conditions.
On the subject of changing media conditions and Disney, as cord-cutting continues, the company is quietly preparing to launch a standalone ESPN streaming service, reports The Wall Street Journal. That includes adapting ESPN’s deals with cable providers and sports leagues to allow for streaming. The linear version of the sports net would continue after the streaming option debuts, according to WSJ.
Nickelodeon announced the US launch of Our World, a global initiative to inspire kids. With partners that include 4-H, Ashoka, Association of Children’s Museums, ChangeX and The Aspen Institute, Nickelodeon is providing resources and best-practices for kid-driven philanthropic opportunities that inspire them to take action in their communities and beyond. The multiplatform initiative will live across Nickelodeon’s linear, digital and social platforms.
The 2023-24 Upfront season marked a milestone for The Impact Network, led by Creative Director and EVP Royal Jackson, as it transitions from a faith-based channel to a general entertainment network that provides entertainment serving the Black audience with programming made for multi-generational family viewing. The Upfront holds “great opportunity for brands to really support authentic diverse owned media such as Impact TV,” said Jackson. “We hope that fulfilling their diversity commitments will not only bring new hope to the publishers but new audiences to brands.”

Gomez is a senior adviser for International Information and Communications Policy in the Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy, and served as the National Telecommunications and Information Administration Deputy Administrator from 2009 to 2013. FilmRise and France’s Canal+ Docs have boarded a documentary from director Sabrina Van Tassel (‘The Silenced Walls,” “The State of Texas vs. Melissa”), “Missing From Fire Trail Road.” The film delves into the case of Mary Ellen Johnson-Davis, a Native-American woman who disappeared in 2020, and exposes how hundreds of Indigenous women continue to go missing in the US, perpetuating transgenerational trauma on Indian reservations.

It’s getting real for CBS later this summer than usual. With the writers’ strike in week four, the network is setting premiere dates that could stretch into fall. Season three of “Secret Celebrity Renovation” premieres Friday, July 28 at 9p, and season 25 of “Big Brother” kicks off with a 90-minute special on Wednesday, August 2. New musical game show “Superfan” makes its debut on August 9 at 9p (moved from June 9), followed the next night by season two of “The Challenge: USA” at 10p.
“Real Housewives” stars Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan help spruce up Benton, IL in Bravo’s fish-out-of-water spinoff, “Luann and Sonja: Welcome to Crappie Lake,” premiering Sunday, July 9 at 9p. The series moves to its regular 10p timeslot the following week.
Season two of “Power Book IV: Force” starring Joseph Sikora (“Power,” “Ozark”) will premiere on Friday, September 1 at midnight on the STARZ app, all STARZ streaming and on-demand platforms and internationally on the LIONSGATE+ across Brazil, Spanish-speaking Latin America, the UK and Ireland. On linear, the drama will debut on STARZ at 8p in the US.
NBC’s “LA’s Fire & Rescue” launches Wednesday, June 21 at 8p. The docuseries follows firefighters on actual calls.

OpenVault announced that a patent application for helping cable and fiber broadband providers to define and apply targeted policies dynamically has been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “System and Method for Applying CMTS Management Policies Based on Individual Devices” describes how a provider can fully automate policy management and enforcement to align with network conditions and subscriber behavior. A patent number is expected to be awarded in the near future.

The European League of Football has partnered with Endeavor Streaming to develop its media distribution and OTT strategy, and enhance its streaming service, Game Pass. The partnership will also see Endeavor Streaming offer marketplace strategy, product strategy and end-to-end technical deployment to help ELF grow and expand its fanbase across Europe. Launching ahead of the 2023 season, the renewed Game Pass platform will provide fans with an integrated digital offering available across web, mobile and supported Smart TVs. For the first time, fans will be able to watch multiple ELF games concurrently, powered by Endeavor Streaming’s multi-view technology, and access localized commentary. ELF will also be able to leverage deeper consumer insight metrics and analytics to develop its marketplace strategy in key emerging markets for the sport.
Tennis Channel will have live coverage every day of the 15-day French Open again this year, its 17th year in Paris, from May 28-June 11. Between the network, Tennis Channel Plus and FAST channel T2, over 1,750 live hours of matches at Roland Garros will air. Action on all platforms begins Sunday, May 28, at 5a.
