IN THE NEWS

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he anticipates releasing state guidelines on Monday for how TV and film production can get rolling again, at least in counties “that are in better condition than some of the others.” During an Economic Recovery and Reinvention Listening Tour, Newsom said the guidelines would allow some counties “to begin to move forward and allow modification, allow some work to be done.”

ABC announced its slate for the 2020-21 season, including straight to series orders for David E. Kelley thriller Big Sky and Kari Lizer (The New Adventures of Old Christine) comedy Call Your Mother. Nineteen series were renewed, with American Housewife, The Bachelor, black-ish, The Conners, Dancing With the Stars, The Goldberts, A Million Little Things, mixed-ish, The Rookie, Shark Tank, Stumptown, 20/20 and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire joining shows previously announced. The net also reported it was #1 in entertainment based on A18-49 viewers, averaging 1.452 million. “At a time when we are physically apart and shared experiences matter more than ever, these shows will build on the strategy that has made us No. 1 this season – bringing people together, creating cultural moments, and making content that entertains and inspires across generations and demographics,” said Karey Burke, President, ABC Entertainment. “Our top priority now is to work with our studio partners to ensure a safe return to production so that we can build on the strong momentum of a winning lineup with measured bets on new series that will invigorate our air and continue to deliver the quality programming that our viewers have come to expect and love.” For more on the new season and ratings highlights, go here.

Series that didn’t make the cut for another run on ABC were Schooled, Bless This Mess, Single Parents, Emergence and Kids Say the Darndest Things.

National Geographic also announced its lineup for next season. The upfront slate includes the next installment of Genius, focused on the life of Aretha Franklin; the reimagining of the longest-running documentary series in history, Explorer; the premiere of competition series Race to the Center of the Earth; 9/11, a six-part documentary special to mark the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks; and for Earth Day 2021, the natural history series Planet of the Whales. The brand will also launch its first annual National Geographic’s Best Pictures of the Year, a sponsorable multiplatform opportunity. “People’s understanding of the world around them has been shaken. And they are coming to National Geographic in record numbers, I believe, because particularly in times of uncertainty, people flock to brands that they trust,” said National Geographic Global Television Networks President Courteney Monroe. “When it comes to our television programming, we are doubling down on what we do best, which is to deliver premium, creatively ambitious programming that connects audiences to the world around them, satisfies their curiosity and transports them to places they may otherwise never go.” For details on programming, go to the Cynopsis Upfronts Navigator.

STREAMING SCOOP

Netflix announced it is checking in with customers who haven’t watched anything in a year or more to see if they want to keep their membership. If the streamer doesn’t hear back, they’ll cancel the subscription. “You know that sinking feeling when you realize you signed up for something but haven’t used it in ages? At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using,” the company said. Inactive accounts represent less than half of 1% of Netflix’s overall member base, so the move shouldn’t affect the streamer’s bottom line – just help distracted customers. “We hope this new approach saves people some hard earned cash,” said Eddy Wu, Director, Product Innovation.

TECH TALK

Facebook added a new feature to Messenger aimed at making it more difficult for malicious parties to pose as other people, and protect minors. Accounts will be scanned for suspicious activity (like accounts sending an unusually large number of requests in a short time). If suspicious activity is found, a chat window will give options for blocking or ignoring the user. The new feature also educates people under 18 to be cautious when interacting with an adult they may not know, and empowers them to take action before responding to a message.

Apple and Google offered the first public version of its exposure notification API, created to help warn people of potential exposure to others who have been diagnosed with coronavirus. “What we’ve built is not an app — rather public health agencies will incorporate the API into their own apps that people install,” said the companies. “Our technology is designed to make these apps work better. Each user gets to decide whether or not to opt-in to Exposure Notifications; the system does not collect or use location from the device; and if a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, it is up to them whether or not to report that in the public health app. User adoption is key to success and we believe that these strong privacy protections are also the best way to encourage use of these apps.”

TVSquared and Hudson MX have partnered to enable automated, performance-based media for local TV advertising. Agencies that make buys through the Hudson MX platform will be able to access TVSquared to measure campaign performance, impressions and business outcomes in real time. “Our partnership is creating a new currency for local TV. Hudson MX advertisers can now buy based on performance, GRPs or impressions, which offers more flexibility than ever before. This is the future of TV media buying,” said Jo Kinsella, President of TVSquared. “Hudson MX has overhauled old, inefficient buying processes that have defined this space for decades. At TVSquared, we’ve brought the need for real-time proof of performance to the forefront. As two disrupters, we are hyper-focused on moving the industry forward for the benefit of advertisers, and this partnership is doing just that.”
