IN THE NEWS
NBC and Peacock will lead NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Paris Olympic Games. NBC plans to run at least nine hours of daytime coverage each day – Paris is six hours ahead of the US’ eastern time zone, which means popular events like the finals for gymnastics and swimming will air live during the day. At night, NBC will deliver “an enhanced Olympics primetime show,” featuring behind-the-scenes access. Meanwhile Peacock, in a Summer Games first, will stream every sport and event, while Telemundo provides Spanish-language coverage. Plans for USA, E!, SNBC, Golf Channel and Universo will be released at a later date. The Games take place July 26-August 11, 2024.
Netflix has pivoted to a virtual Upfront event amid the WGA strike. The company’s first live presentation to advertisers was scheduled to take place at NYC’s Paris Theater on May 17. The Writers Guild of America has said it will picket next week’s Upfront events, and Netflix’s switch to a remote event was reportedly made following NYPD concerns for pedestrian safety.
Mayim Bialik is skipping out on her last scheduled week of hosting “Jeopardy!”, in support of WGA strikers. The game show uses questions from writers, but those had been written in advance of the strike so the show can finish its run. Ken Jennings, who splits hosting duties with Bialik, is expected to step in.
And it looks like seniors at Boston University will have to do more than pick up their diplomas at graduation – they’ll be crossing a picket line. The WGA has warned it will be picketing Sunday’s event, where Warner Bros. Discovery President & CEO – and BU graduate – David Zaslav is scheduled to give the commencement address.
Faith and family streaming platform Pure Flix and family-friendly media company Great American Media have signed a deal to merge. Pure Flix will become part of the new company, with Great American Media contributing two cable channels, Great American Family and Great American Living, and a FAST channel, Great American Adventures. Great American Media President and CEO, Bill Abbott, will serve as CEO of the merged entity.
Kaitlan Collins appears poised to take over CNN’s 9pm slot, which has been filled by rotating hosts since the exit of Chris Cuomo over a year ago. Following her face-off against Donald Trump at CNN’s Town Hall on May 10, during which the former president called her a “nasty person,” CNN issued a statement saying, “Tonight, Kaitlan Collins exemplified what it means to be a world-class journalist.” Collins is currently co-anchor of “CNN This Morning.”
Speaking of CNN’s Trump town hall, the news net caught flak for giving the Republican presidential candidate a platform. CNN Worldwide Chris Licht defended the coverage in an editorial call. “There is so much we learned last night about what a second Trump presidency would look like; that is incredibly important for the country to hear,” Licht said. “That is our job, is to get those answers and to hold him accountable in a way that no news organization has done in years, and while we all may have been uncomfortable, hearing people clapping, that was also an important part of the story, because the people in that audience represent a large swath of America.”
CNN might be clapping for the town hall ratings – the event drew 3.3 million viewers and 781,000 among A25-54 in Nielsen numbers, versus 1.45 million/140,000 A24-54 for Fox News and 1.38 million/160,000 A25-54 for MSNBC. The network’s town hall with President Biden on February 16, 2021 delivered 3.7 million P2+ and 912,000 in the news demo. Sean Hannity’s event in June of 2020 delivered the most viewers of any Trump town hall – 5.12 million.
NBCUniversal tapped Comscore and InnovidXP for a “multi-currency future.” For the first time, NBCUniversal will transact on Comscore across 31 markets and 42 NBCU- and Telemundo-owned stations, with plans to move to more guarantees on all buys. In collaboration with InnovidXP, NBCU has also rolled out new impact and incrementality metrics. Said Comscore CEO Jon Carpenter, “Comscore and NBCU are longstanding partners and we are honored to expand our partnership to support their move toward a more precise and reliable local measurement guarantees for all buys.”
The CW has picked up another Canadian series, “The Spencer Sisters.” The drama, starring Lea Thompson (“Caroline in the City”) and Stacey Farber (“Superman & Lois”) as a mother/daughter detective team, is slated for the net’s fall lineup. The CW already picked up “Sullivan’s Crossing,” “Son of a Critch, “Run the Burbd” and “Moonshine.”
Win some, lose some. The CW axed “Kung Fu” after three seasons and “The Winchesters” after one. The two scripted series are the latest cancellations at the network as it moves to lower costs by acquiring scripted originals in Canada and the UK.
Reelz’ “On Patrol: Live” was honored last night at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s annual Heroes’ Awards in Washington, D.C. To date, a total of 17 people – a majority of them children – have been recovered after being featured on the show. “We are tremendously honored that ‘On Patrol: Live’ was recognized with NCMEC’s ‘Excellence in Media’ Award, but it really belongs to our dedicated and engaged viewers who band together as #OPNation when they tune in every Friday and Saturday night,” said Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard.

Frederator Networks has launched Cartoon Hangover Shots, a social video animation incubator program for original “kidult” animations. “Cartoon Hangover Shots represent the quick consumption of mobile-friendly animations,” said Kenny Ash, President of Frederator Networks. “Pilots can take months and longer to create, especially if you’re an independent animator. Our goal with Cartoon Hangover Shots is to provide the animation community with a platform that helps eliminate the time, energy and funds it may take creators to start building audiences for their work.”

FX set a premiere date for “The Full Monty.” The original series, a sequel to the 1997 British film, debuts June 14 on Hulu, following six men navigating post-industrial Sheffield amid society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.

COMING UP
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will air for the second year on Scripps networks ION and Bounce, starting with the preliminaries from 9a-7:25p on May 30. Last year, Bee programming was seen by 7.5 million viewers.
STREAMING
Penske Media has launched livestreaming platform Harmony. “We are the proud stewards of some of the most iconic entertainment shows in the world and excited to offer a platform that allows for a seamless experience for our consumers to engage with live content—in addition to streaming and broadcast,” said Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman and Founder, Penske Media. “We are committed to growing and evolving the footprint and audiences for our shows across all platforms.”
Disney plans to combine content from Hulu and Disney+ into a “one-app experience” by the end of the year, announced CEO Bob Iger. “While we will continue to offer Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ as standalone options, this is a logical progression of our [direct-to-consumer] offerings that will provide greater opportunities for advertisers while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content, resulting in greater audience engagement and ultimately leading to a more unified streaming experience,” said the CEO.
TECH TALK
Quantcast and FreeWheel formed a new partnership that gives marketers working with Quantcast access to premium programmatic video supply across all personal screens and devices, including OTT and CTV. “Our company has been at the forefront of using AI to interpret media consumption patterns and deliver campaign performance and outcomes,” said Konrad Feldman, CEO, Quantcast. “By teaming up with FreeWheel, we can better support our advertisers to reach consumers across even more engagement and connection points.”
CTV now accounts for 51% of global video impression share, an increase of 10.9% compared to 2021, with mobile and desktop steadily declining year over year, according to a new report by Innovid. “In 2019, CTV accounted for just 31% of total impression share by device,” said Dave Helmreich, Chief Commercial Officer at Innovid. “Today, it accounts for over half of all video impressions – and that share is already up another 3 percentage points in Q1 2023. As TV viewership continues to shift towards streaming, the share of CTV impressions will only continue to grow – and this trend is evident as Upfront buys continue to flow towards CTV inventory.”
SPORTS ROUNDUP
The Phoenix Suns must try to negotiate a new deal with Diamond Sports Group before exiting their deal with Diamond’s Bally Sports Arizona, ruled a Texas bankruptcy judge. The Suns announced a broadcast rights agreement with Gray Television and were promptly sued by Diamond for breach of contract. The judge noted the Suns’ deal with Diamond includes a clause that prevents it from leaving Bally Sports without giving the RSN a chance to enter a more competitive bid.
Tennis Channel has a big anniversary on Monday, May 15. “In our wildest dreams 20 years ago we couldn’t have imagined the changes in media and technology that have allowed Tennis Channel to share this sport in its entirety, in the way that it actually exists every week on the tours,” said Ken Solomon, President, Tennis Channel. “The original linear network, the SVOD platform and FAST channel combined give you a tennis experience that’s never been available in history. But whatever combination or by themselves, they suit anything our viewers, sponsors or distribution partners need.”
Nickelodeon and CBS Sports have teamed with the NFL for the 2023 season. The “Nickelodeon NFL Nickmas Game” will take place on Christmas Day, with the Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs competing in a “slime-filled Christmas Day game tailored for kids and families.” This marks the third season of Nick’s weekly NFL series “NFL Slimetime.”
In the last year, there has been an increase in sports brands investing in virtual formats across video games (170 brands total), broadcasting, and in-venue, according to SponsorUnited report Power of Media in Sports Sponsorship. Key findings include:
* Virtual sponsorships are surging, with video game sponsorships increasing 15% YoY
* Automotive brands top the charts for virtual broadcast sponsorships

Long-time media and advertising industry PR guy Mark Braff, who retired in late 2020, now finds himself in what he calls the “odd” position of being the interviewee rather than the interview facilitator for his new book, Sons of Baseball: Growing Up With a Major League Dad. Braff shares his story in Cynsiders.
