IN THE NEWS
The domestic team at Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios/Paramount Media Networks is being cut by by 25%. “This is a tough yet important strategic realignment of our group,” said Chris McCarthy, President & CEO of the group. “Through the elimination of some units and by streamlining others, we will be able to reduce costs and create a more effective approach to our business as we move forward.” The move comes after a reorg that combined nine networks, which are reportedly taking the brunt of the hit. MTV News is shutting down.
“Representing a wide range of mediums, genres, and narrative approaches, this year’s winners continue to advance what it means to craft storytelling that is compelling, powerful, and prescient,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. PBS was the big winner with six awards, followed by three each for Apple+ and Disney+, and two for HBO Max. Winners in the entertainment category included ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” Disney+’s “Andor,” FX’s “Atlanta,” Apple+’s “Bad Sisters,” “Pachinko” and “Severance,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” HBO Max’s “Los Espookys” and “We’re Here,” and Netflix’s “Mo.”
CBS has reversed course on “S.W.A.T.” Canceled on Friday, the network has instead ordered a seventh season and added series star Shemar Moore – who rallied fans to save the show and give it a proper conclusion – as an executive producer. “We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for ‘S.W.A.T.’ and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year,” said Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment, and Katherine Pope, President, Sony Pictures Television Studios. “’S.W.A.T.’ has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve.”
Not so fortunate – yet, at least – are “True Lies” and “East New York,” both canceled by CBS after one season. The decision had to do with budgets and streaming rights, reports Deadline.
The CW’s “Walker” scored a season four order for 13 episodes. It’s the net’s most-watched linear show in total viewers, and is produced by CBS Studios. “Over the past three seasons, ‘Walker’ has become the top performing series on The CW with a passionate fanbase and a fantastic cast and creative team led by Jared Padalecki, who has now been a leading man on the network for over twenty years,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, The CW. “As we build a great big new future for The CW, we are thrilled to be staying in business with our partners at CBS Studios.”
Sinclair Broadcast Group’s free over-the-air multicast networks are bolstering their primetime lineups with new acquisitions. Headed to Comet this summer is “Grimm” (2011-2017), while “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (2001-2011) joins the police lineup on Charge! this fall. Original viral video show “The Laugh List” premieres this fall on TBD.
Hadley Gamble, whose complaints about former NBCU CEO Jeff Shell led to his dismissal, is headed for the CNBC exit. “Hadley Gamble, Anchor and Senior International Correspondent, is leaving the company,” said the news net in a statement. “Gamble has been a distinguished journalist for more than a decade for CNBC, undertaking highly visible and challenging assignments, and developing deep expertise in the Middle East and beyond. Her initiative and drive have secured valuable interviews with several world political leaders. We wish her every success in her future endeavors.”
NewsNation has signed former Congressman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney as a political and economic contributor. Mulvaney will offer commentary and analysis across the network’s programming, including the new political ensemble program, “The Hill,” and special election and political coverage.
MONEY TALKS
Reporting results for 1Q3, AMC networks announced plans to launch an rad-supported version of AMC+ later this year and unveiled Audience+, a new insights and data targeting platform that allows advertising partners to identify and reach viewers across ad-supported distribution platforms. On the money side, the company said net revenues increased 1% from the prior year to $717 million, largely driven by increased distribution and other revenues partly offset by lower advertising revenues. Streaming subs rose by 22% year-over-year, to 11.5 million, though down from 11.8 million in the fourth quarter when “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches” premiered. Said CEO Kristin Dolan, “While we reevaluate the pathways to content monetization, we are strategically reducing costs and streamlining our organization. These efforts contributed to a first quarter with strong margins and increased streaming revenue as we prioritized higher-value subscribers for our streaming portfolio.”
Fox Corporation reported total quarterly revenues of $4.08 billion, an 18% increase from the $3.46 billion reported in the prior year quarter. Advertising revenues increased 43% (tip of the hat to football and growth at Tubi). The company reported a quarterly net loss of $50 million as compared to net income of $290 million reported in the prior year quarter, a variance primarily due to charges associated with legal settlement costs at Fox News Media, which settled a defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million. CEO Lachlan Murdoch described the settlement costs as a business decision that “in no way alters Fox’s commitment to the highest standards of journalism and our passion for unabashedly reporting the news of the day.”
Diluted earnings per share of $2.97 for Nexstar were down from the $5.99 in 2022 but better than forecasts; total revenue increased 4% to $1.257 billion. In an earnings call, CEO Perry Sook was bullish on The CW. “One of the most pleasant surprises following our takeover is that when we said that the doors are open, let’s talk about doing business, the community responded,” he said. “It’s in everybody’s best interest that there’s a viable fifth network competitive out there.”
Dish suffered a cyberattack that appears to have impacted its results for the quarter. The company counted 9.198 million pay TV subscribers by the quarter’s end, down 552,000 from the end of year and down more than 1 million from a year ago. Satellite subscribers dipped to 7.098 million, down 318,000 for the quarter. Sling TV slipped from 2.252 million subs a year ago to 2.1 million, and net income fell 48% to $223 million.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
NBCUniversal announced new series being added to its cable stable. For USA Network, it’s “The Big D,” launching Wednesday, June 14 at 10p. The dating show, originally set at TBS, was scratched from the schedule before it made it to air. An untitled social experiment from Studio Lambert is also headed to USA. And E! gave a green light to unscripted competition series “House of Villains,” hosted by Joel McHale.
With the goal of raising awareness and understanding of climate issues, Adam McKay has launched nonprofit Yellow Dot Studios. “The climate is changing much faster than large swathes of our media are telling us, and there is no time to waste,” said McKay. “Oil companies’ horrible and destructive disinformation created decades of delay in dealing with climate breakdown. Yellow Dot’s goal is to push back, whether that’s through in-house videos, or videos for climate orgs and activist groups, to help get people involved and activated at a rapid pace.”
Wonderworld.Fun, a production and distribution company specializing in premium animation content, has launched under the direction of Mevelyn Noriega, who will serve as CEO. Operating out of LA, the new company will work in partnership with Deepak Nayar’s production company Kintop Pictures, VFX and animation studio ReDefine (part of the DNEG Group), and Namit Malhotra’s production company Prime Focus Studios, to create, produce, and distribute animated content for a global inclusive audience. Wonderworld.Fun will also seek to produce and distribute third-party developed and owned IPs with international appeal.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
“Arnold,” a docuseries about Arnold Schwarzenegger, debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, June 7. The three-parter follows Schwarzenegger from his beginnings in Austria to Hollywood and politics.
USA Network’s “Temptation Island” is back for season five on Wednesday, June 14 at 9p. New twist: a temptation light has been added to the houses, and when it glows it signifies that someone in a relationship has fallen into temptation – but the couples won’t know if it’s their partner or someone else in the house.
Season two of “Minx” – picked up by Starz after it was canceled by HBO Max – premieres in its new home on Friday, July 21 at 9p.
Speaking of new homes, “Ghost Adventures” kicks off its Discovery run with a two-hour season premiere on Wednesday, May 31 at 10p. The paranormal series is jumping from Discovery sib Travel Channel.
And three’s a trend: Season six installments of “The Real Housewives of Miami” will premiere on Bravo, instead of Peacock, where new episodes have debuted for the past two seasons. The reality show originated on Bravo, where it ran from 2011-13. It was revived in 2020 on the streamer, where it will now air day-after.
Genius Brands International has acquired the non-exclusive US broadcast and streaming rights for the CBC Kids original music series “Jeremy and Jazz.” The series will make its US premiere on Kartoon Channel! on Friday, May 12.
Season eight of “Quest for the Stanley Cup” drops Friday, May 12 on ESPN+. The docuseries follows the drama on and off the ice as teams compete for the trophy.
COMING UP
HBO doc “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” directed by James Adolphus (“Soul of a Nation”) and produced by Lena Waithe (“A Thousand and One”), Debra Martin Chase (“Harriet”), and Ben Selkow (“Q: Into The Storm”), debuts Friday, May 26 at 8p. The film highlights Moore’s groundbreaking roles and the impact she had on generations of women who came after her.
Warner Bros. Discovery has picked up the new CG-animated series “Barney’s World” for Cartoonito on Cartoon Network and streaming on Max. The series, announced earlier this year as part of Mattel’s Barney franchise relaunch, will revamp the character for modern audiences, and debut globally in 2024.
STREAMING
All eight episodes of the first half of season five of “Yellowstone” start streaming on Peacock on May 25. They join the first four seasons of Paramount’s hit ranch drama, which will come to the end of its run this fall.

The World Squash Federation has renewed its relationship with Dunlop. The three-year deal will see Dunlop continue to be the official ball of all WSF Championships, as well as the official ball of all Continental Federation Championships, including at the junior, senior and masters levels.
GOING GLOBAL
