04.30.15

Good morning. It’s Thursday April 30, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

One of the sports industry’s most famous tandems formally split as GoDaddy and Danica Patrick announced plans to go their separate ways after a long partnership. GoDaddy said Wednesday the that company was shifting gears on its marketing strategy and would depart NASCAR, and subsequently Patrick, after this season, although they will reportedly continue working with the driver on a personal services agreement.

“GoDaddy has been an incredible partner for a very long time, almost nine years, and as I’ve said before, our brands have really grown up together,” Patrick said in a statement. “It’s pretty cool, from a marketing perspective, that we helped GoDaddy build such strong brand awareness here in the U.S. I’m excited to work with GoDaddy on a personal level moving forward, but will miss having their bright green color on my racecar next year. Now, there’s an opportunity for another breakout brand to join me and Stewart-Haas Racing and experience the kind of growth we had with GoDaddy.”

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports is booking a ticket to Hawaii in a move to honor fallen soldiers at Pearl Harbor as part of a weekend-long remembrance. The company will call Pearl Harbor home from Dec. 4-7 this year to mark the anniversary of the tragic attack with activities and events associated with MLB, NFL and college basketball planned throughout the weekend. The slate includes hosting a clinic for children at a local school, followed a day later by a similar event at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for children of active military personnel. Dec. 5 will see FOX Sports 1 lineup studio programming from a set on the bow of the Battleship Missouri Memorial with programming that includes a college basketball and the Big Ten Championship football game. Dec. 6 will then see FOX NFL Sunday present a special two-hour edition live from the deck of the battleship as the sun rises over Pearl Harbor.

April was a lion for Golf Channel, which announced its most-watched April of all time, notching 16.3 million unique viewers. For 24-hour Total Day, the network drew 132,000 average viewers per minute during the month, marking a 2% year-over-year uptick, according to Nielsen. The channel also reports that it retained its status in April as No. 1 most-affluent network in all of television with the highest median household income for total day viewership.

espnW locked in reporter and columnist Jane McManus, one of espnW.com’s initial contributors, to a multiyear extension. The new deal will see McManus continue to serve as a primary voice for espnW on multiple ESPN platforms including the site, ESPN television and ESPN Radio.  In addition, she will still contribute to ESPN.com and ESPNNewYork.com as an NFL reporter.

After a nice run at ESPN and ESPN Films over the past eight years, ABC News tapped Dan Silver to serve as executive producer for ABC News Digital where he will now manage the digital editorial team and create, produce and develop new forms of digital content. Silver previously ran the development and production of 30 for 30 documentaries the include “The Two Escobars,” “Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks,” “Once Brothers,” “Silly Little Game” and “The Hawaiian.” In addition, he worked with ESPN’s digital teams and managed the development and production of various original digital series, including “30 for 30 Shorts,” the “Nine for IX Shorts.”

CBS Sports Network carries Knockout Night at the D on May 22 at 1:30a, with the boxing card set to take place at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. Headlining the inaugural event will be undefeated Richard Commey and Bahodir “Baha” Mamadjonov for the vacant International Boxing Federation Inter-Continental Lightweight Title. In a special attraction bout, undefeated light heavyweight Mike Lee will fight and then join Al Bernstein and Barry Tompkins on the televised call of the main event.

Jeff Gordon will finally take part in the Indy 500. The NASCAR driver was announced as honorary pace car driver for the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24. After laps as the honorary Pace Car driver, he’ll then head to North Carolina to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race that evening. "Jeff is a great choice to lead this year’s starting 33 drivers in the Indianapolis 500 to the green flag," said J. Douglas Boles, president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "Jeff has such a strong connection to the state of Indiana and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and his appearance in the Corvette Z06 pace car reinforces Chevrolet’s important place in the past, present and future of the Indianapolis 500. We also look forward to seeing him back here on July 26, to see if he can make it six wins in the Crown Royal 400 at the Brickyard."

Pac-12 Networks celebrates Pac-12 students and their championship performance in the classroom via the special Conference of Champions on Sunday at 9p. The one-hour special centers spotlights how the “unique collegiate experience at each of the Conference’s world-class institutions has shaped the personal stories and career aspirations of 12 student scholars.”

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Major League Baseball signed up with Esurance in a new sponsorship deal that makes the insurance brand the exclusive auto insurance partner for the league. The deal will see Esurance serve as title sponsor of the new all-digital Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, which launched yesterday exclusively at MLB.com and the 30 Club sites on the web, smartphones and tablets. Esurance also will be collaborating with Major League Baseball, MLB.com and MLB Network on a new, modern awards platform. Additionally, Esurance will partner with Buster Posey, three-time World Series champion, two-time All-Star catcher and fan-voted 2015 Face of MLB, as a brand ambassador.

espnW will team with ESPN Consumer Products and HOMAGE to launch the “Be” apparel collection inspired by famed female athletes  Hilary Knight, Billie Jean King and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The collection offers T-shirts, hoodies and pants, with graphics and silhouettes communicating the stories of these three women via three distinct messages: “Dare to Be,” inspired by Hilary Knight; “Be Bold,” inspired by Billie Jean King; and “Be the Best,” inspired by Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

The NFL, USA Football, GENYOUth and Fuel Up to Play 60 are looking to expand their commitment to youth health by giving NFL FLAG Essentials Kits to one million students across 2,500 schools nationwide, including 10 focus cities: Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Jacksonville, Miami, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and San Francisco. The expansion is made possible by a $1 million commitment from NFL Foundation.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Kahuna announced plans to power the official New England Patriots app for Apple Watch, just ahead of the NFL Draft. Fans will now be able to receive real-time updates on their wrist during every game and the entire draft. “Sports fans want updates constantly, but pulling a phone out of your pocket every 30 seconds isn’t an effective way to stay connected,” said Adam Marchick, CEO of Kahuna . “The Draft is the perfect example of a time that the Apple Watch lets us focus on living our lives without being tied to our phones, while still intelligently delivering updates so fans don’t miss a thing.”

PRODUCTION SPOTLIGHT

Tapped to build up the “fight of the century” between Mayweather/Pacquiao, 2C detailed production for its promo campaign for HBO Sports and Showtime Sports. The company utilized motion capture robot MILO to create camera moves enabling them to shoot each boxer separately over green, followed by the background plates in the desert. After blending them in post, the results are shots that “convey the suspense and sheer scale of Mayweather and Pacquiao coming face to face at this stylized crossroads.” “Metaphorically, this spot is about the different paths these two titans have been on throughout their careers, all leading to this inevitable collision … a crossroads and showdown taking on the feel of a classic Sergio Leone gunfighter standoff,” said project director/creative director Brian Eloe. “However, we weren’t literally taking our fighters out into the desert, so we needed to transport them from the green screen into an epic, yet believable cinemascape and convey the smoldering tension of a showdown long overdue.”

VIDEO GAMES/ESPORTS/FANTASY

eSports behemoths ESL and ESEA are teaming up to launch the ESL ESEA Pro League, which is debut in May. The new entity will offer a prize pool of US$1,000,000 for 2015 and full travel support for the offline finals. “ESL started out with Counter-Strike more than fifteen years ago,” said Ralf Reichert, Managing Director of ESL. “Now, many years later, we are extremely humbled to be in a position where we can pioneer the first regular US$500,000 Counter-Strike tournament together with ESEA. We are proud to have continuously lead the industry in terms of innovation and broadcasting quality and are sure that this new venture will be an unparalleled experience for our global audience.”

THE MAIN EVENT

NFL Draft on ESPN and NFL Network at 8p.
