04/30/14: Media players react to NBA Commissioner’s decision to ban Sterling, Sports takes center stage at the Cable Show, Wimbledon has a winner

04.30.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 30, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The hammer fell for Clippers owner Donald Sterling, as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced a lifetime ban for the team owner and a fine of $2.5 million. Silver also stated that he would look to have the other owners force a sale of the team immediately. In addition, Silver urged Clippers sponsors to return to the fold, after a slew of brands withdrew support for the team following Sterling’s comments. "I would say those marketing partners of the Clippers and partners of the entire NBA should judge us by our response to this incident, and I think we’ve responded appropriately, and I would be hopeful that they would return into their business relationships with the Clippers," Silver said at the press conference.

Meanwhile, social media reaction from key media figures was overwhelmingly positive toward Silver’s actions.

  • Mark Cuban – "I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling"
  • Jay Williams – "The NBA will take his franchise but can’t hinder Sterling’s profits of selling the franchise but Silver has set the precedent for the NBA."
  • Shaq – "Way to go, Commissioner Silver! The NBA stands for everybody!"
  • Greg Anthony –  "Fine is inconsequential… Never about money all about losing control of the team… Could never fine him enough to hurt but this does #NBA."
  • Magic Johnson – "Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life."
  • Paul Allen – "I completely support NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s decisive action on the Sterling issue. Great leadership and the league is in good hands."
  • Dick Vitale – "Donald Sterling Banned 4 Life from NBA = #AWESOMEBABY"
  • Tracy Wolfson – "Wizards staying at my hotel. Cheers just came from a room nearby after Silver made his announcement."

ON THE AIR

ESPN President and co-Chairman of Disney Media Networks John Skipper told attendees of The Cable Show’s opening session that the industry needs to improve its delivery across devices and stress the value of pay TV Cable television moving forward in order to fend off up-and-coming digital rivals. "Clearly the big social and digital platforms are competing for eyeballs, and they’re competing for advertising," he stated, according to multiple reports, before adding, "We have superior content. We need superior delivery systems."

The Cable Show also saw LA Mayor Eric Garcetti call out Time Warner Cable and the Dodgers to complete distribution deals so more fans would be able to watch games, stating, according to the AP, "I hope that we can resolve the fact that our home town baseball team, the Dodgers, is not currently seen on all of our boxes around the city."

Before the College Football Playoff even begins, athletic directors don’t see it lasting long. CBSSports.com writes that while college football leaders are meeting in Dallas this week to figure out details of the first four-team playoff, most believe that the mini tournament will expand to eight teams sometime in the next 10 years. The survey polled 27 FBS-level athletic directors with 15 of them believing that expansion is on the horizon, citing greater access, more money and public pressure as reasons to go bigger.

Speaking of the NCAA, Golf Channel detailed production plans for the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships with more than 20 hours of live news and tournament coverage on deck. The network airs live tournament coverage starting Monday, May 26 through Wednesday, May 28, when 30 teams and an additional six student athletes in play for team and individual championship honors. Production will include nine hours of live tournament coverage as well as 11 hours on location for Golf Central and daily news updates on Morning Drive. Talent will include Bob Papa on play-by-play with Lanny Wadkins as lead analyst.

CBS Sports offers PGA TOUR 2014: Imprints presented by Mercedes-Benz on Sunday at 2p, highlighting current PGA TOUR players who are making an impact on the game. The one-hour special precedes CBS’s final-round coverage of the Wells Fargo Championship and features players such as Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, Jason Day, Jonas Blixt and Harris English.

MLB Network saw its fan-produced episode of Intentional Talk deliver 136,000 viewers on Friday, according to Nielsen, for a 32% increase on the show’s average to-date this quarter, and a 72% increase over the program’s average audience in the second quarter in 2013.

UFC President Dana White announced that Mexico will play host to The Ultimate Fighter Latin Merica: Team Velasquez vs. Team Werdum. The series will begin taping on May 12 with the two coaches facing off at UFC 180 in Mexico City on November 15.

We hope it’s a speedy recovery for NBC Sports and Golf Channel analyst Notah Begay III, who suffered a heart attack last week in Dallas. Begay is expected to make a full recovery and plans to resume his broadcast duties within a few weeks.
