Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 29, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Shalaen Yancey, HR Generalist, TV One.
What are the top 3 qualities you look for when interviewing a candidate?
As the recruiter, I look for positive energy, passion and charisma. The rest is up to the hiring manager.
Do you think that candidates have changed in the last 5 years?
Yes. I think candidates have less tenure in positions and everyone is looking for managerial positions with no true managerial experience. I also think candidates are looking for higher salaries as the job market is more and more competitive and the cost of living is rising everywhere.
What’s a better thank you-vehicle: an email or a handwritten note?
I definitely think a handwritten note with a creative spin is the way to go. Everyone sends an email but as a candidate, you have to stand out.
What are the warning flags you look for in a resume?
I look for writing style, creativity, and wording. I want to understand the candidate’s story through their resume. I also want to see if they are just looking for a job or are they are passionate about the job they are applying for.
Tell us about a hire you made that didn’t work out as you hoped and what you learned from the experience.
Honestly, I have very few of these stories because I make sure the initial vetting process captures the right candidates for the position. Anytime a hire doesn’t work out the way I expected it to is because I didn’t go with my gut feeling.

TV net BabyFirst tapped Nancy Cohen to serve as Senior Vice President, Sales & Sponsorship. Cohen had been Senior Vice President, Ad Sales at UP TV.
Stefan Baron was appointed Head of International Co-Productions at Nice Entertainment Group. Most recently, Baron had been Co-Production Executive at SVT Drama.
Sam Register was upped to the newly created position of President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series. Register will head a newly-formed live-action digital content production unit and spearhead the development and production of original live-action digital series, while continuing to run the studio’s television animation unit.
Debmar-Mercury named Karen Bonck Senior Vice President, Branded Partnerships. Bronck has held branded entertainment posts at NBCUniversal and Disney ABC Television Group.
Harpo Films promoted Carla Gardini to Executive Vice President of Production and Development. Gardini’s previous title was Senior Vice President; she will continue to supervise the production and development of all scripted and television features.
TLC hired Jack Tarantino as Vice President, Production – West Coast, and Elvia Van Es Oliva as Vice President, Development – West Coast. Tarantino had been Vice President of Original Programming at Style; Van Es Oliva served as Senior Vice President of Development for Fly On the Wall Entertainment.

Tribune Broadcasting appointed Katherine Green as Senior Vice President of News, starting May 5. Green was most recently SVP/Managing Editor at HLN.
Julian Bellamy will join ITV Studios UK, taking over from Managing Director Denise O’Donaghue later this year. Bellamy is Discovery Networks International Creative Director and Head of Commissioning.
