IN THE NEWS

In his first public appearance since leaving the White House, Barack Obama noted the dangers of a fractured media landscape. Speaking at the University of Chicago, the former president warned that between social media and cable news – which has liberals tuned to MSNBC and conservatives fixated on Fox News – “we now have a situation where everybody is listening to people who already agrees with them, and are further and further reinforcing their own realities to the neglect of a common reality that allows us to have a healthy debate and then try to find common ground.”

Reports have NBC debuting a Sunday newsmagazine with Fox News transplant Megan Kelly in June. Kelly, who will also eventually have a morning show hour per her agreement with the net, was released from her FNC contract earlier this month.

Norman Lear will host a weekly podcast, All of the Above with Norman Lear, on PodcastOne starting May 1. Scheduled guests include Amy Poehler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerrod Carmichael and America Ferrera.

The cause of death for Happy Days alum Erin Moran, who was found unresponsive on April 22, was complications of Stage 4 cancer, according to the Harrison, Indiana Sheriff’s Dept. and Coroner’s Office. Moran was 56.

Fox News Fox & Friends anchor Heather Nauert has been named State Department spokesperson. “Heather’s media experience and long interest in international affairs will be invaluable as she conveys the administration’s foreign policy priorities to the American people and the world,” said the State Department. Fox & Friends is a favorite cable news show of President Trump.

White House press secretary Sean “Holocaust Centers” Spicer may be prone to gaffes and the butt of jokes, but according to the Washington Post, his job is safe, at least for now. “I’m not firing Sean Spicer,” it was reported President Trump said at a White House lunch. “That guy gets great ratings.”

HBO grabbed the most wins in the 24th Annual NAMIC Vision Awards, honoring programming that reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the viewing audience. Nat Geo’s Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson tied with HBO’s Lemonade in the Talk/Variety category, while ABC’s Secrets and Lies shared top Drama series honors with BET’s Being Mary Jane. History’s Roots: A New Vision won in the Documentary category. For a full list of winners, go here.

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions and Lemuel Plummer of L. Plummer Media are bringing limited series Two Sides of the Truth, focused on four cases that have been watershed moments for law enforcement and the Black community, to TV One. Davis also narrates.

COMING UP

The Prison in Twelve Landscapes explores the hidden world of the modern prison system and its impact outside jail cell walls on PBS Independent Lens on Monday, May 8 at 10p (check local listings). “When we start to examine the prison system from the spaces all around us, we begin to see how much more it has to do with jobs, with resource extraction, with economic development, with race and with poverty than it does necessarily with crime,” said producer/director Brett Story.

John Dickerson will interview President Trump on the 100th day of his administration on Sunday, April 30 at 10:30a on Face the Nation, starting at the White House and moving to POTUS’ rally in Harrisburg, PA. More of the interview will air on Monday, May 1 on CBS This Morning.

NAB NOTES

The first day of NAB featured plenty of lounging on the grass between sessions, speakers wearing bright yellow trousers (Newsy’s Freddie Godfrey, we mean you) and networking galore. Show attendees got a 4K greeting (and a back flip) from astronaut Dr. Peggy Whitson, from the International Space Station. NASA will produce the first live 4K stream from space for a session tomorrow, “Reaching for the Stars: Connecting to the Future with NASA and Hollywood.”

Speaking of which, Livestream CEO Jesse Hertzberg tells Cynopsis that the biggest category in live streaming is “faith,” i.e., weekend religious services. “It’s appointment viewing,” he points out. Hertzberg added that his clients are particularly interested in two things: “immersion (360 and VR) and interactivity – chatting, polling, and Q&A.”

NAB president Gordon Smith noted that while technology may advance, “the highest-quality content will always find its way to broadcast TV because of its unparalleled reach.” But broadcasters have a responsibility, said Smith. They “carry the torch of freedom and integrity, and we must use this to question those in power, to expose those who abuse their positions and to find the truth.”

Dish Network introduced low-cost wireless video production solution Sling Studio. “Existing multicamera video platforms run upwards of $5,000 at a market entry point. Where Facebook and YouTube have democratized live streaming, SlingStudio is democratizing the gear that directors need to make those streams great,” said Dish CTO Vivek Khemka. “With its accessible price and easy-to-use apps, SlingStudio changes how content creators can think about producing video.” Base price: $999.

The Weather Company introduced enhancements to its Max Engage solution for news stations. Updates to the Max Engage system include the ability to automatically detect weather and traffic events, create personalized content and video about those events, and intelligently deliver that content. “With these new enhancements, newscasters can produce up to 10 times more content than they do today,” said Bill Dow, Executive- Media Solutions, TWC. “Through targeted distribution, stations can share this content through alerts only to those users in the part of the DMA that will be affected, such as when traffic on a key highway route slows below normal.”

Also announcing advancements was AccuWeather, to StormDirector+. The interactive weather system being demonstrated live at NAB will allow users to create interactive weather presentations that adapt quickly to changing weather conditions, develop customized alerts for conditions beyond severe weather, and provide web and mobile page content creation.

Aerial camera systems company SkycCam introduced SkyCommand, designed to bring viewers of sporting events a more compelling experience by allowing its SkyCam WildCat system to be controlled safely in a stadium or arena from a remote studio. SkyCam is the provider of three-axis aerial camera systems for the NFL, NCAA and their broadcast partners.

VIDEOS IN SHORT

The number of global viewers who would rather watch short-form video clips on mobile devices versus TVs jumped from 28% a year ago to 41%, according to  research from Accenture. Viewing on laptops was a fairly steady 47% in 2016 to 44% in 2017. The survey of 26,000 consumers in 26 countries also revealed the percentage of respondents who prefer watching TV shows on television dropped over the past year from 52% to 23%.

IFC added 2 original digital series to its Comedy Crib. Frank & Lamar follows best friends who work together as middle school teachers, and Sport Court centers on a judge assigned to a courtroom created to put obnoxious sports fans on trial.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Hallmark Channel ordered season 5 of When Calls the Heart. Recently concluded season 4 of the frontier drama was up double digits in HHs and key demos year over year.

The new syndicated daytime talk show starring Steve Harvey has a launch date (September 5) and an executive producer (Shane Farley). Steve, cleared on over 95% of the country, will air on NBC Owned Television Stations as well as station groups across the country.

With Fox NewsBill O’Reilly gone, who will be the next big voice in cable news? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

DIGITAL DATA

Cord Cutters (viewers who have eliminated standard TV subscriptions) and Cord Nevers (who have never paid for a standard TV connection) have very different viewing preferences, according to GfK’s new Cord Evolution study. Four of the top 10 streaming shows among Cord Nevers don’t appear on the list of favorites among their Cutting cousins, and while 3 of Nevers’ favorite shows are found on Amazon and Hulu, all 10 of Cutters’ are on Netflix. One thing the groups do have in common: their #1 show is Orange Is the New Black. Data also shows that 60% of Cord Nevers are “very satisfied” with their current TV access situation, compared to 50% of Cord Cutters.

ABC has signed over 160 stations for its OTT Clearinghouse Initiative, including stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, The E.W. Scripps Company, Hearst Television, TEGNA Media and others. About 90 percent of US TV households can or are about to be able to stream live ABC broadcasts on cable and satellite TVE offerings, or non-traditional platforms. “We are committed to digital distribution solutions that benefit the local/national relationship and the value it brings to consumers, so this is a real win for us, our affiliates and our video partners,” said Disney|ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood

Viewing of TV Everywhere content on TV-connected devices jumped to 32%, according to an Adobe study, versus 20% 2 years ago. Viewing of TVE content on mobile, on the other hand, slid to 46% in January from 54% in 2015, the first drop for that month recorded.

Music Choice’s “The New Music Choice” is now available to Mediacom Communications customers. The technological evolution of the streaming music service designed for IPTV set-top-box television platforms allows users to navigate to related video content or any Music Choice On Demand offerings within a single interface. Mediacom customers will now have access to commercial-free audio plus video streaming that contextually displays related music offerings.

Australian streaming service Stan has launched production on its latest Stan Original Series, The Other Guy, starring and written by comedian and broadcast personality Matt Okine. The comedy-drama from Entertainment One is based on Okine’s own experiences.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Telemunudo has Ford Motor Company and Subway onboard as sponsors for new series Guerra de Idols (War of Idols), the first original musical drama in Spanish-language television. Characters will be seen riding in, and using tech features in, new models of Ford’s F-150, Mustang and Explorer vehicles, while custom scenes will integrate the Subway brand and products as characters write and record music in the series’ studio.

CASTING

Camryn Manheim (The Practice), Eric Lange (Narcos), Annika Marks (The Fosters), Stephen Culp (Bosch) and Sarah Minnich (Better Call Saul) have been added to the cast of Paramount Network 6-parter Waco, premiering in January 2018.

Maurice Compte (Narcos) has joined the cast of FX’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans MC, set on the California/Mexico border.

SOCIAL GOOD

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises donated $20,000 to support the founding of SLAM Miami (Sports Leadership and Management) Chart School, for its first music program. Armando Christian Perez, aka Pitbill, is a SLAM Miami founder. The donation was made possible through community platform El Poder en Ti.

As part of National Volunteer Week, TEGNA, the Arby’s Foundation and Points of Light are honoring 14 volunteers from across the country for their dedication to service on Make A Difference Day. Grants of  $10,000 will allow honorees to donate the money to a charity of their choice and continue to make a difference in their community. Winners were selected from over 1200 projects.

Millennials and Gen Z want TV networks and brands to make a difference in the world. In fact, 90% of Americans say they are more likely to stay loyal to brands that support social causes. But how can companies make sure they’re hitting the right note when championing a cause, and most effectively market their message? The May 23 Cynopsis interactive webinar, Programming & Marketing Strategy for Social Good: Making Your Message Count will have experts from Young & Rubicam and AT&T to offer advice, insights and case studies on how to develop campaigns that resonate with viewers and clients.
