UPFRONTS UPDATE

With the promise to “REPRESENT the many facets of Black Culture past, present and future,” TV One offered a more focused slate of programming during its Upfront presentation this year. “Our goal is to provide our discerning audience of information-conscious influencers with more of what they are looking for in original films, family reality, true crime and justice content,” said Brad Siegel, TV One’s president. “This will offer advertisers more opportunities to be seen in the positive environment of our popular, quality appointment television offerings.”

Live morning news content will expand to 3 hours, with News One Now growing to 2 hours, from 7a-9a. Later this year, the show will undergo a name and format change, as Black America Today, with Roland S.  Martin remaining at the helm as host. Hour 3 will include a live, multi-platform daily talk show hosted by a panel of 4 women.

TV One’s True Crime & Justice programming will get a second night starting in August, anchored by season 3 of For My Man. Limited series Two Sides of the Truth will focus on high profile cases that have been watershed moments for the Black community, and Evidence of Innocence, currently in production and slated to premiere in 2018, will profile the stories of individuals convicted of crimes they didn’t commit. Unscripted Hotlanta will follow homicide detectives on the gritty streets of Atlanta.

Scripted series and family-centered reality shows remain on the schedule, including The Manns, which premiered in early April, and Rickey Smiley For Real, which returns for a fourth season in July 2017. “TV One will continue to make programming that celebrates and builds up family, recognizing that no two families are alike,” said Siegel. “The Manns and Rickey Smiley For Real are great complements to one another as well as reinforce our goal to produce programming that incorporates family, faith and fun.”

Original movies include three inspired by musical artists: Who Can I Run To: The Xscape Story, All This Love: The DeBarge Family Story, and Bobbi Kristina, about the late daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. Downsized, written by a finalist in the TV One/American Black Film Festival Screenwriting Competition, depicts a suburban couple who become teenaged parents.

VIDEOS IN SHORT

Timed to the date of William Shakespeare’s birthday on April 23, TNT announced the premiere date for upcoming series Will, focused on The Bard’s young, rowdy years. The net also marked the occasion by releasing several short spots with Shaquille O’Neal, including Shaq spoiling “5 plays in 5 seconds.” Check it out: https://app.frame.io/d/75sMe7LO.

ESPN 30 for 30 short The Amazing Adventures of Wally and the Worm, an animated retelling of the time Chicago Bulls assistant trainer Wally Blase was tasked with watching over Dennis Rodman “doing his physical rehab during the day and then doing the stuff that gets you into rehab at night,” according to filmmaker/actor Colin Hanks (Life in Pieces), is being shown at the Tribeca Film Festival this week.

COMING UP

A marathon of all 7 Police Academy movies starts Sunday, May 7 at 8a on HDNet Movies. Michael Winslow, who played recruit Larvell Jones in the franchise, is hosting.

DIY Network produced a house flipping pilot starring Anthony Ray, aka Sir Mix-A-Lot. The special one-hour episode will feature the Grammy-winning artist and expert house-flipper as he finds, renovates and flips houses in his hometown of Seattle. The yet-untitled program is scheduled to premiere in July 2017.

New ID true crime series The Real Story with Maria Elena Salinas does more than revisit notorious cases from the past. “We’re taking things a step further,” Kim Woodard, co-president at Lucky 8 TV and an executive producer for the series, tells Cynopsis. “María Elena reveals new details, evidence and perspectives that were either neglected or unavailable when events originally took place. Audiences may walk away with new feelings and opinions about stories they’ve known for years.” Real Story debuts tonight at 10p.

Travel Channel’s Josh Gates’ Destination Truth sets out Friday, May 19 at 9p, and over 43 episodes will cover over 50 sites, including Machu Picchu, Peru and Petra, Jordan. First up: Indonesia, in search of the elusive orange pendek. Plus, a worm monster in Iceland.

Season 2 of Feud, focused on Prince Charles and Princess Diana, will begin with their divorce, said Ryan Murphy at FX’s Emmy event in LA last week. “It’s about that pain of the dissolving of a fairy tale,” said Murphy. Asked whether Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange, who played Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in the first season of the anthology series and will continue as executive producers, will also perform during season 2, Murphy responded, “Always.”

G-Eazy will perform his new song, “Good Life,” on NBC’s The Voice tomorrow, April 25 at 8p. The song can be heard on box office smash The Fate and the Furious.
