Good morning. It’s Thursday April 23, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The IOC is eyeballing April 2016 as the launch date for its upcoming Olympic TV channel, looking to gain traction just ahead of the Olympic games. According to the AP, Olympic Broadcasting Services CEO Yiannis Exarchos is bolstering staff to around 100 people to be based in Madrid to produce programs and features about Olympic athletes and sports. The network is also looking to lock in a return on its $600 million investment in 10 years. "It’s a pretty aggressive plan, it’s a pretty optimistic plan but we live in the Olympic world," he said at the SportAccord convention in Sochi.

ON THE AIR

The Atlanta Hawks have a new owner in place. ESPN and Yahoo write that entrepreneur Antony Ressler has a deal to buy the NBA team for around $850 million, financed by cast and assumption of some debt. The report states that Hawks CEO Steve Koonin and coach Mike Budenholzer will continue to be part of the long-term plans of the new ownership group.

Kids’ Choice Sports 2015 will see Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson play host this summer as the awards show returns for year two on Nickelodeon. The ceremonies will take place on July 16 at 8p and feature “special guests, performances, outrageous competitions and unique categories to be announced in the coming weeks.” Last year’s inaugural Kids’ Choice Sports saw David Beckham presented with the first Kids’ Choice Sports’ Legend Award while Dwyane Wade, Tim Howard, Serena Williams, Kevin Durant, Gabby Douglas, Victor Cruz, Carmelo Anthony, each took home a KCS trophy.

The first two weeks of the 2015 baseball season set a new benchmark for MLB Network as the most-watched two-week regular season period in channel history. Programming was, boosted by the network’s most-watched Opening Day (April 6), most-watched regular season total day (April 10), and the most watched regular season week ever from April 13-19. Average total day audience hits 149,000 viewers. In addition, MLB Network’s new regular season weekday morning show, MLB Central is averaging a 17% spike in viewership for the first two weeks of the regular season vs the same time period in 2014.

Lots of NFL Draft programming news. NBC Sports Group is set to take a “never-before seen look” at the league’s annual selection meeting via Pro Football Focus: Grading the 2015 Draft, debuting Monday, April 27, at 5:30p on NBCSN. The new, one-hour show will feature Cris Collinsworth, the majority owner of Pro Football Focus, join host Paul Burmeister, and PFF analysts Steve Palazzolo, Neil Hornsby and Sam Monson. To prepare for the 2015 NFL Draft, Pro Football Focus watched every play of every draft-eligible player from the 2014 college season and assigned a grade for every play, every game and for the full season. “As a former producer of 12 NFL Drafts, I can only wish I would have had every play of every player’s final season of college football analyzed and graded,” said Fred Gaudelli, coordinating producer of NBC’s Sunday Night Football. “No one else covering this or any prior draft can make this claim. NFL Draft fans are in for a treat with Pro Football Focus’ complete analysis of the Class of 2015 and the 32 NFL teams that will select them.”

Meanwhile, Intersport, in partnership with NFL Films, produced a second-annual NFL Draft show airing this weekend: NFL Championship Chase: The Draft Presented by Mercedes-Benz. The show premieres on CBS on Saturday at 2p with Adam Schein in as host, joining Jamie Erdahl, Steve Beuerlein, Greg Cosell, Corey Chavous and Ike Taylor. The program re-airs on NFL Network on April 27 at noon and CBS Sports Network at 6p on April 28.

On the radio front, Yahoo Sports Radio carries a five hour broadcast special on the first night of the NFL Draft, with hosts Steve Bunin and and Jonathan Peterlin. Insider analysis will also be contributed by Marty Hurney, and Shaun King, who will be live from the Draft at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago. The special airs Thursday, April 30 from 8p-1a.

The penultimate race of the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross revs up to run on FOX on Saturday at 3p, marking the first time the Feld Motor Sports-promoted and produced race from MetLife Stadium airs live on the broadcast network. Justin Kutcher hosts coverage, with Ralph Sheheen providing play-by-play, and Jeff Emig and Ricky Carmichael offering insight and analysis. Production includes 14 manned cameras, counting two high-speed X-MO cameras, two robotic cameras, a jib, two point-of-view cameras and the award-winning Spidercam.

Golf Channel’s Golf Central this week marks its 10th consecutive year broadcasting from the PGA TOUR’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, continuing to follow the story of the tournament’s impact on the post-Katrina community during its recovery and revival. Programming begins today at 2p.

Tuesday night’s Islanders game delivered a 2.64 household Nielsen rating on MSG/MSG+, averaging 252,593 total viewers. Those Nielsen numbers rate as the second highest round one rating since 2002 (2.78). To date, Islanders playoff games are averaging a 1.95 HH Nielsen rating on MSG Networks through round one.

The Royals’ win over Minnesota on Tuesday drew the highest rating ever on FOX Sports Kansas City. That score also marks the second time in three games the Royals have set a new ratings mark on the regional sports network. Overall, the contest averaged a 15.9 household rating/146,000 households in the Kansas City market, according to Nielsen Media Research.
