IN THE NEWS

Univision is now the sole owner of Fusion, its former news joint venture with Disney/ABC. Univision already has replaced ABC to run network distribution and ad sales. Fusion is part of the Univision unit that also includes the company’s interests in El Rey, Univision Digital, The Root, The Onion, A.V. Club, Clickhole, Starwipe, Flama and Univision Music. Fusion launched in 2013.

HBO is prepping for the return of Game Of Thrones for a seventh season; lengthy negotiations have surrounded the flagship drama and its seventh and eighth final seasons. The network also picked up comedies Veep for a sixth season and Silicon Valley for a fourth.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network ordered a 13-episode second season of original drama Greenleaf ahead of the show’s June 21 premiere. From Lionsgate TV and writer/producer Craig Wright (Six Feet Under), the series is set against the backdrop of a Memphis megachurch. Season one will launch with a two-night premiere on Tuesday, June 21 and 22 at 10p.

Music television executives are reacting to the unexpected death of music icon Prince yesterday at age 57. The star of the film Purple Rain and provider of one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows, in 2007, appeared on Saturday Night Live in 2014. “It’s right up there with MJ passing. Complete icon,” Jermaine Hall, VP and managing editor, digital, at BET, told Cynopsis. “He was such a self-contained artist who pushed the boundaries, and has influenced so many artists after him.”

MTV changed its logo to purple all day yesterday, and MTV and MTV2 aired a dedicated block of the artist’s most influential music videos. “MTV is heartbroken and in utter disbelief at the news that the world has lost Prince Rogers Nelson so suddenly and so before his time,” the network said in a statement. “Prince was a once-in-a-lifetime artist who transcended every medium and genre he touched and created music with a passion and individuality that inspired multiple generations.” Beginning yesterday and planned through the weekend VH1 is airing Purple Rain numerous times and a block of Prince’s most memorable music videos.

AXS TV celebrates Prince’s legacy with a tribute block Saturday, April 23 featuring the Prince episode of AXS TV’s Rock Legends at 1p and the TV premiere of documentary Slave Trade: How Prince Re-made the Music Business at 2p.

Turns out the bark between Dish and Viacom was bigger than the companies’ bite. The two announced a multiyear renewal yesterday, minus live and VOD rights which Dish extracted for Sling TV, ensuring that BET, MTV, Nickelodeon, TV Land and the rest of the Viacom networks suite remain on Dish’s menu.

A+E Networks and History are taking their four-year partnership with Team Rubicon USA global. On April 25, History will join forces with the Team Rubicon Global international expansion project to rollout a 60-second “Mission to Honor” PSA in the UK in support of Team Rubicon UK, the first international affiliate of the veterans volunteer group whose mission is to unite the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams to disaster zones. The PSA debuts on the heels of Prince Harry joining Team Rubicon UK in Nepal as they rebuild a school destroyed by the 2015 earthquake.

AMC and Channel 4 have begun filming the second season of drama series Humans, produced by Kudos and penned by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks). The eight-ep series set in a parallel present is slated to premiere in the UK in late 2016 and in the US in 2017. UPFRONT UPDATES

Programming details announced at IFC’s Upfront press lunch lived up to the net’s “Always On, Slightly Off” tag. Season two of Documentary Now! will include seven new episodes, including “The Bunker,” spoofing 1993 political doc The War Room, and “Globesman,” the story of a quartet of door-to-door bible salesmen. Producer and new dad Seth Meyers was on hand, interrupting lunch table talk about babies to express appreciation for IFC’s support.

Two recently greenlit series were in the spotlight, thanks in part to appearances by Brockmire’s Hank Azaria and John C. McGinley (Scrubs), star of Stan Against Evil, at the event. Brockmire, set to premiere in early 2017, focuses on a major league baseball announcer trying to rebuild his life after a public meltdown. Stan, arriving in late 2016, follows a demon-fighting duo. Coming back are Portlandia for a seventh season, Maron for season four on May 4, and Comedy Bang! Bang! for a fifth run on June 3.

Among shows in development are Todd Barth Can Help You, from co-creators Bryan Cranston and Steven Weber, starring Weber as an insurance adjuster-turned-wannabe-self-help guru; Canterbury Tales, centered on the 1970s punk rock scene; film noir-inspired comedy Detective Lady, and How to Rig an Election, based on the book of the same name.

IFC also announced late night block Comedy Crib, an online hub for short-form comedy that will start in the fall, and the net has partnered with four comedy festivals that will feature the brand in over 25 cities. “IFC’s commitment to comedy is going coast to coast,” said Blake Callaway, EVP, Marketing and digital media. “These festival partnerships will allow us the opportunity to support some great comics, highlight our own programming line up and bring along advertising partners for on the ground sponsorships.”

So how are Upfront meetings going so far? “We’ve had a great response from advertisers,” net president and GM Jen Caserta told Cynopsis. “We’ve become a destination for talent, and advertisers understand what we have to offer  they get the benefit of partnering with shows that are more distinctive.”

At its Upfront presentation last night at NY’s Skylight at Moynihan Station, MTV unveiled a programming slate of 14 new series and specials, including the fall debut of LA-based Wonderland, the network’s first weekly live music performance series in nearly 20 years. Among those the network is partnering with on new content are Mark Burnett, Zac Efron, Drew Barrymore, Pitbull, John Legend, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia.

Among other series getting the green light are Sweet/Vicious, a dark dramedy about odd couple vigilantes avenging sexual assault victims on a college campus; The Outsiders (wt), a docu-series following families living on the fringes of society; and Acting Out, a new format in which stand-up routines are reenacted. Also, Mary + Jane, a comedy about enterprising weed dealers navigating LA hipster culture; docu-series Shinesty, and MTV’s The Investigation (wt), a reality series in which Ryan Ferguson, who spent 10 years wrongly imprisoned, digs into cases of the wrongfully convicted.

Efron will exec produce and host a docu special about the ever-expanding role of food and the culinary arts in millennial culture. Burnett is developing comedic reality half-hour First World Problems (wt), and rapper Pitbull will executive produce Miami-based drama 305 (wt). MTV also announced the MTV Music Video Awards will air Sunday, August 28, live from NYC’s Madison Garden for the first time.

The Upfront was hosted by Nicole Byer and featured a performance by Kendrick Lamar.

COMING UP

First Lady Michelle Obama will appear in the May 3 episode of CBS NCIS in conjunction with Joining Forces, a nationwide initiative supporting service members, veterans and their families. In the episode Obama welcomes NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and the wife of a Marine to the White House for a Joining Forces roundtable with military spouses. The extras are actual military spouses.

VICE and A+E NetworksViceland network will premiere Dear President Obama today, April 22 at 8p to coincide with Earth Day. The documentary from Oceans 8 Films and narrated by political activist and Academy Award-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo juxtaposes a look at drilling, highlighting its variety of contaminations, the stories of its victims and the false promise of an economic boom, with clean energy solutions. It’s written, directed and produced by Jon Bowermaster.

Bow down. Smithsonian Channel is celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday with two-hour program The Queen at 90, culled from sweeping access to Her Majesty and the Royal family’s lives at Buckingham Palace and across the UK and overseas. Elizabeth McGovern will narrate the special, which interviews with President Barack Obama, Minister David Cameron and David Beckham.

CBS will broadcast a new one-hour special featuring two classic episodes of I Love Lucy on Sunday, May 22 at 8p. The two eps, “Lucy Visits Grauman’s” and “Lucy and John Wayne,” are newly colorized with a vintage look, reminiscent of the ‘50s period in which they were filmed.
