Verizon FiOS launched its Custom TV service Tuesday, offering customers channel packs from different genres, despite objections from ESPN and Fox Sports that the packages do not comply with their existing agreements. On an earnings call Tuesday, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said, “We believe we are allowed to offer these packages under our existing contracts.” Custom TV packages include 35 base channels pus two genre packs for $54.99. “This package gives customers the flexibility to choose what they want and pay for just that,” said Tami Erwin, president of Verizon’s consumer and mass business group.

Expect digital disruption to impact the Upfront market, says measurement guru Brad Adgate, SVP research at Horizon Media. “The emergence of digital media has already wreaked havoc with legacy media such as print and radio/audio,” Adgate tells Cynopsis. “It is now impacting television/video and ad dollars. Coming off a sluggish ad marketplace, television usage among young adults has dropped precipitously in 2014-15. In previous years, the networks increased CPM’s by building demand; as digital siphons off younger viewers that may not happen this time around.”
TV Land picked up original series Younger for a second season. “Younger is the first step in TV Land’s evolution,” said Keith Cox, EVP development and original programming. Comedy’s season finale airs Tuesday, June 9 at 10p.

Travel Channel and the New York Times are teaming to bring the paper’s travel column, 36 Hours, to TV. Itineraries of co-hosts Kristen Kish and Kyle Martino will be informed by NY Times editors and contributors. “We jumped at the chance to work with The New York Times on this series knowing viewers and travelers alike will benefit from these two brands coming together,” said Travel president Shannon O’Neill. “This show brings the popular column to life, and is designed to get at the soul of each city in a way that will inspire people to travel and experience the world.” Series is produced by Bungalow Media & Entertainment.
MTV was loud and proud at NYC’s Beacon Theatre Tuesday night, during a presentation hosted by Girl Code’s Carly Aquilino and Guy Code’s Charlamagne, featuring performances by Jessie J. and Brooklyn pop act Misterwives. The show opened with the premiere screening of the first seven minutes of Scream; actress Bella Thorne was on hand, along with Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Nev Schulman (Catfish: The TV Show), Katie Stevens (Faking It) and YouTube star Todrick Hall.
But really, it was all about the slate. “We’re exploding our development process across screens – getting faster, more daring, putting more projects into play and taking bigger swings than ever,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV.“We’ve exponentially expanded the ways we connect with our audience and deliver for our advertisers.”
Among the new series announced: late-night comedy talker Middle of the Night Show; reality show Todrick, starring Todrick Hall, Follow The Rules, a comedic look at rapper Ja Rule and his clan; live action/animated Greatest Party Story Ever and weekly talk show Girl Code Live. Broke A$$ Game Show, Are You the One? and Faking It all scored renewals. “This slate demonstrates the creative breadth of what MTV can do – epic scripted dramas, irreverent comedies, inventive format-driven series, fun topical talk shows, all with a distinct, youthful voice,” said Susanne Daniels, President of Programming for MTV.

The special is “a stark reminder that these police officers are merely ordinary people asked to do extraordinary things,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President, Discovery Communications. For the special, premiering Sunday, May 17 at 9p, CBS News legal analyst and former trial attorney Rikki Klieman explores cases of split-second decisions that changed lives.
