Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 22, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Miguel Santos, Myx TV’s General Manager.

What was your first leadership position?
I was Head of Production and OAP at MTV Asia for their channel in the Philippines.

What did you learn from it?
I learned that a leader can’t be self-serving or play favorites. You have to look out for the best interests of your department as a whole, even if that means making hard decisions that aren’t popular. I was 25 when I was promoted to my first leadership position so it was a steep learning curve for me. Being a leader requires a great deal of maturity and perspective.

Tell us about a management decision you wish you’d handled differently.
There were some instances when I should’ve been more assertive in enforcing a decision I made. Perceived uncertainty can affect the confidence that a team has in their leader.

What do you look for when interviewing candidates?
I look for three things: skill, discipline, and passion. Having skill is a given, but discipline and passion separate outstanding employees from the rest — they’re willing to learn, apply what they learned, and go the extra mile.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

PBS promoted Michael Kelley to Senior Vice President, Programming & Business Affairs and Bill Gardner to Vice President, Programming and Development. Kelley joined PBS in 2008 as Vice President, Strategy and Operations; Gardner joined the net in 2012 as Director, General Audience Programming.

Howard T. Owens is stepping down as President of National Geographic Channels in June. "Howard injected remarkable energy into the National Geographic Channels brand," said CEO David Lyle. "He has been an invaluable member of our leadership team."

Steve Koonin exited his post as President of Turner Entertainment Networks to become part owner and CEO of the Atlanta Hawks basketball team. Koonin had had held the Turner post, overseeing TNT, TBS, truTV and TCM, since 2000. 

Discovery Communications upped Rita Mullin to General Manager, Science Channel, effective June 2. Mullin had been Executive Vice President, Programming and Development at OWN.

Brad Bessey has been promoted to oversee both Entertainment Tonight and The Insider for CBS Television Distribution. Bessey had been Executive Producer of The Insider; in his expanded role, he adds the title to ET.

Vernon Church has been appointed to the newly created role of COO at TruthCo. Previously, Church managed end-to-end digital, content, social and operational solutions for media businesses from his consultancy, Cakeworthy Advisors.

CBS Television Distribution named Brad Bessey as Executive Producer of Entertainment Tonight, effective immediately. Bessey is currently Executive Producer of The Insider and will add ET to his roster. Monique Chenault joins The Insider as Co-Executive Producer.

National Geographic Channels has several leadership shifts. Courteney Monroe, previously Chief Marketing Officer for National Geographic Channels’ domestic networks, has been named CEO, National Geographic Channels U.S. David Hill, who currently serves as Senior Executive Vice President of 21st Century Fox and is a member of the National Geographic Channels Board of Directors, will add the title of Chairman of National Geographic Channels U.S. to his resume. David Lyle, who has served as CEO of National Geographic Channels since 2011, will step down.

BabyFirst, the TV network devoted to high-quality child development programming, has named Mary Jeanne (MJ) Cavanagh as Executive Vice President, Advertising Sales. Cavanagh most recently headed the ad sales operations for UP TV, ASPiRE and Sportsman Channel.

NBCUniversal has promoted Anand Kini to Executive Vice President, Strategy and Business Insights. Kini previously served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Development.

Dee Dee Myers, who previously served as White House press secretary during the Clinton administration, is Warner Bros.‘ new Executive Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Communication and Public Affairs. Sue Fleishman, who spent nine years at Warner Brothers, is leaving the company.

David Wisnia has been named President of Business Operations for TVGN, a CBS Corporation and Lionsgate partnership. Wisnia previously served as a member of TVGN’s Board of Directors.

Monique Chenault has been tapped as Co-Executive Producer and showrunner of CTD’s The Insider. She comes to the daily strip from NBCUniversal‘s Access Hollywood where she was a Senior Producer.

WNET has appointed Michael Kantor as Executive Producer of American Masters. In addition, Lesley Norman has been promoted to Production Executive in the networks programming department.

The Media Kitchen assigned Jonathan Kim to the new role of Digital Engineering Director. He previously served as Senior Search Strategist.

Wilshire Studios has expanded its internal development team, hiring reality vet Benny Reuven as Vice President of Development and Programming. Reuven brings experience from both sides of the business, as development executive at OWN and as producer of numerous shows such as Food Network‘s Chef Wanted.

AMC/Sundance Channel promoted Marco Frazier to Senior Vice President, Global Distribution, EMEA, based in Italy. For the past five years, Frazier has worked with AMC/Sundance Channel Global on international business development and global distribution throughout the EMEA region. 

Powderhouse Productions upped Seanbaker Carter to President. Carter has led development at the company since 2007.
