TODAY’S TOP NEWS

The Bahamas will once again be way more animated this summer when Cartoon Network returns for a fourth year to the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort May 30-Aug. 23 for a deep integration that includes a 9,000-square-foot Adventure Time-themed inflatable obstacle course on the beach and Paradise Lagoon, nighttime outdoor screenings, premieres of Cartoon shows, a free beachside Paramore concert (May 31) and Cartoon-themed camps and character parades.
     "We’re partnering with another important brand to families. That’s the main difference from when we try to set something up on our own. And it’s seamlessly integrated," Scott Thomas, Cartoon VP of consumer marketing, tells CynKids. One example is that for the season, Atlantis room key cards are designed based on one of four Cartoon shows. Thomas says one way he knows the brands are resonating is that the resort reports an increase in "lost key" claims so families can collect all four. And the icing on the cake? "Atlantis voluntarily includes us in their advertising," Thomas says. "For their TV ad campaign that runs on competitive networks and places we don’t advertise, a third of the spot is showcasing the Cartoon Network fun."

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Disney Junior will say "Thanks mom," all day long on Mother’s Day, May 11, with themed episodes running from 9a-9p on the network.

Nothing says family time like decorating for the holidays. Except maybe watching other families partake in their own ridiculous annual rituals. ABC is bringing back The Great Christmas Light Fight for this holiday season. The FremantleMedia North America series debuted last December, featuring 20 families competing to have the greatest Christmas display, and it delivered the net’s highest total viewers in the time period in five years. So… the net will also be airing the one-night special The Great Halloween Fright Fight this fall, featuring families competing for the greatest of the ghoulish haunted Halloween displays.

DreamWorks Animation‘s upcoming How to Train Your Dragon 2 will screen out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film fest. According to The Hollywood Reporter, festival director Thierry Fremaux said the screening will allow the event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the studio in the presence of long-term supporter Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Speaking DA’s big anniversary, a tribute to the music behind some of the company’s biggest hits will be staged July 18-19 at the Hollywood Bowl. From Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon to Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, the event will show film highlights on the Bowl’s big screen, with their scores performed live.

For those who can’t get enough of Disney’s Maleficent trailers, beginning today Disney Parks are offering an exclusive extended sneak peek at the film. The reels are playing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the ABC Sound Studio and Disney California Adventure park in the naturalistic "underground" setting of the Bug’s Life Theater. The film opens May 30.

GAMES & APPS

Disney Club Penguin is now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The virtual world was brought to iPad as a playable experience in December, and today’s update further integrates it in the iOS platform. The Club Penguin app has reached nearly 5 million downloads and is available in six different languages. This week’s update coincides with one of Club Penguin’s most popular virtual events, the Puffle Party.
 
More learning, Seuss-style, is on the way from Oceanhouse Media. The new app from the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library: Inside Your Outside, debuts this week focusing on all things about the human body, from the right and left sides of the brain to following food and water through the digestive tract. In celebration of Earth Day, Oceanhouse is also discounting Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax book app from $4.99 to 99 cents through April 22.

INTERNATIONAL

Saban Brands’ Digimon Fusion is launching on Clan TV in Spain. The series, which currently airs on Nicktoons, The CW and Vortexx in the States, has seen global growth since its U.S. debut in fall 2013. Digimon Fusion will premiere on Cartoon Network Latin America this summer. The deal was negotiated by international distributor MarVista Entertainment, in partnership with Saban.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Congrats to Michael Earls, who’s joining The Orchard as Director of Technology. Earls comes from Tunecore, where he ran the software development team for the past three years. The Orchard recently signed an exclusive agreement with Scholastic Media to bring series like Clifford and Goosebumps to the digital video network.
