Good morning. It’s Thursday April 16, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

WME|IMG is getting in the ring with the Professional Bull Riders, announcing the acquisition of the company that boosts its live event portfolio. While the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including antitrust regulatory approval, the deal is expected to close in May. The company snagged the PBR from controlling shareholder Spire Capital Partners.

“We’ve worked closely with the PBR for the last several years and share their passion for expanding the sport of bull riding globally,” said WME|IMG co-CEOs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell in a statement. “The resources across WME|IMG make the partnership a perfect match, combining top quality event production and broadcast rights.”

ON THE AIR

Next week will see the 119th running of the Boston Marathon, with Universal Sports Network serving as the national television and digital media home of the famed race. Live Coverage starts April 20 at 8:30a as part of “Marathon Monday.” On Saturday, the channel will feature a special preview show live from the finish line on Boylston Street featuring analysis of the elite field and interviews at 4p. In addition to race coverage, UniversalSports.com will once again feature the popular “Finish Line Web Cam” that will show all runners as they cross the finish line. Calling the race will be Al Trautwig and Larry Rawson, along with Frank Shorter, Josh Cox and Juli Benson as well as host Paul Sunderland. Universal Sports reports that the in-show sponsorships and features inventory are sold out with sponsors that include CLIF BAR, Skechers, Milk PEP, Slow-Mag, Saucony, Brooks, Anheuser-Busch, Mio Global, Jelly Belly and Under Armour.

The Mountain West Conference laid out its slate for its first package of Friday football telecasts for the 2015 college football season. This initial package of 11 games will be carried nationally on CBS Sports Network and ESPN networks. The lineup will be heavy on Boise State, which will appear five times, beginning Sept. 4 against Washington on ESPN, while the action kicks off the day before with Colorado/Hawaii on CBS Sports Network.

Speaking of CBS Sports Network, Cage Fury Fighting Championships announced a deal with the channel to exclusively televise at least four Cage Fury Fighting Championship events this year. Coverage begins May 14 with CFFC 48 Good vs. Burrell at 10p. CBS Sports Network also will feature coverage from the June 6 CFFC event, along with fights on July 18 and October 31.

NBC Sports Group tapped OneRepublic singer Ryan Tedder for its coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with an exclusive video of the band’s hit single I Lived. The performance, produced by NBC Sports, will serve as the show open and the song will serve as a continuing anthem of the company’s playoff coverage. In addition, the company is tapping its fitness brand Radius for the broadcasts, announcing that NHL on NBC studio analyst Jeremy Roenick is teaming up with Radius master trainer Natalie Uhlingto get in shape for the post-season. Cameras will cover Roenick working with Uhling on a regular basis to drop some post-playing career weight, increase muscle mass and build stamina for the marathon of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NBC Sports Group added three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion crew chief Ray Evernham and broadcaster Ralph Sheheen to the fold, where they will handle coverage of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Events on NBCSN. The pair will first work the 41st running of the Icebreaker from Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Saturday, April 18 at 12:30a. 

Spike TV is unleashing some heavy hitters for its next PBC card, lining up boxing superstar Amir “King” Khan/Chris Algieri for the May 29 event. Televised action begins live on Spike TV at 9 p.
 
NBCSN will showcase the 2015 IPC Paralympic Sled Hockey World Championship with 40 hours of coverage, leading into live coverage of the gold medal game on May 3, at 2:30p. NBC Sports Live Extra will provide complete streaming coverage of all 20 games from the tournament starting April 26, while the network will show up to three games featuring the U.S. Team starting April 29 at 10:30p. Marc Zumoff will handle play-by-play, along with Andy Yohe, and AJ Mleczko.

SNY reports that its coverage of the Phillies/Mets on Tuesday scored a 4.32 household rating for the channel, marking the network’s highest telecast since July 5, 2012. The nine inning affair delivered 429,161 total viewers for its best mark since its June 23, 2010.
