CYNOPSISDIGITAL
04.15.16 Good morning. It’s Friday April 15, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
White Label Service: A white label service is produced by one company, but designed to be used and rebranded by other companies as if they themselves had made it. A white label OTT service, for example, would provide content distributors a customizable platform through which to distribute streaming content.
Social media platforms across the board have been making moves to emphasize video content, and Instagram is certainly no exception. Not too long after upping its max video length from 15 seconds to sixty, the Facebook-owned app has now added video channels to the Explore tab. The Explore section now features compiled video feeds, including a Videos You Might Like feed and a Featured items feed. (At launch, the Featured feed was Meet the New Comedy Stars.) Instagram has made the new video feeds available to US users of its iOS and Android apps, with plans to launch in other locations soon.
Hulu has acquired the exclusive streaming rights to Freakish, a new ten-episode high-school horror series from AwesomenessTV. Now in production, the show is set to premiere on Hulu later in 2016. Both Hulu and AwesomenessTV have scaled their ambitions in the last year or so. Hulu, which in the past has largely relied on licensed programming, has been ramping up its original content slate, especially since adding a (mostly) ad-free subscription tier in September. And AwesomenessTV, once a pure YouTube MCN, has steadily expanded its production output and content partnerships, including a recent deal with Verizon.
As part of a distribution deal with Time, Inc., the digital studio Believe Entertainment Group has produced a five-episode docu-series for People. Called Social Currency, the series centers on YouTube and Vine stars such as Shira Lazar and Jason Nash. It debuted on People.com, and is also set to be promoted across People’s social media channels.
We’re not in Paris anymore. (Or at least, we’re not speaking French.) French cabler Canal Plus will be launching a new English-language YouTube channel dedicated to comedy shows. Called Funny Bones, the channel will release new sketches every Tuesday. Funny Bones will also be available on Dailymotion, which may be YouTube’s biggest competitor, but is also owned Canal Plus parent company Vivendi.
About a year ago, Netflix caught some flak when Marvel’s Daredevil, its series about a blind superhero, debuted without audio descriptions for blind viewers. The service quickly took the hint and then some, adding audio description tracks for Daredevil and other select titles. Now Netflix has reached a three-year agreement with advocacy groups for the blind, pledging to add audio-description tracks for numerous other titles in both its streaming and DVD libraries. Netflix will also make its website and mobile apps accessible to blind and visually impaired users who rely on screen-reading software.

The Twitter-owned Vine, known for its six-second videos, has introduced a new feature called Watch, allowing users to watch multiple Vines strung together in reverse chronological order. It’s not hard to glean similarities to Snapchat’s Stories feature, which lets users splice multiple short videos together. And it’s not surprising to see Vine attempting some new innovations; in December, an analysis from the video analytics firm Tubular Labs indicated that many brands were abandoning the app in favor of platforms like, well, Snapchat. The Watch feature could make for a much more streamlined experience when it comes to branded and influencer-created video.
Apple has integrated CBS into the Apple TV’s universal search APIs. The English translation: If you search for a CBS show via text or Siri voice command, now CBS’s official tvOS title will come up as a viewing option – as opposed to just Netflix, iTunes or Hulu – even if a user doesn’t have the CBS app downloaded to their device. At a very steady clip, the fourth gen Apple TV is becoming friendlier and friendlier to traditional programmers.
The online video startup Unreel Entertainment announced that it has launched Unreel.me, a new white label distribution and streaming platform. The platform is designed as a tool for multi-channel networks, publishers, and creators to create video networks and branded homepages. The company also announced that it has created a new Creator Appreciation Fund, which will enable Unreel.me’s earliest adopters to retain 100% of the first $1 million in revenue that they generate from merchandise sales and paywalls on the platform.
Apparently, it’s an opportune moment to launch a white label streaming service. The live-streaming app Stre.am has launched Stre.am Enterprise, a new service enabling businesses to stream live video feeds from their digital properties. At launch, the service’s partners include businesses from the field of music, sports, and media, including Arsenic Magazine and the women’s tennis tournament the Volvo Car Open.
Shareablee released its list of the 10 TV shows of Q1 2016. Among other findings: The Ellen DeGeneres Show dominated the social rankings, capturing 10 percent of all engagement among TV programs. Pretty Little Liars led primetime and cable shows with an 8 percent growth driven by a 12 percent spike on Facebook and 8 percent increase on Instagram. Good Morning America scored the highest actions among broadcast shows, seeing a 37 percent growth over Q1 2015, and also received the most social amplification (shares and retweets) of any TV show at 6.6 million. Meanwhile, Shadowhunters was the most socially engaged new TV series during Q1 2016, with 17.3 million total social actions reflecting a 33 percent share of voice among all new TV series. You can check out the full list below:
The pop-culture and fashion-oriented media company Nylon Media has made a notable new hire. Jamie Elden, most recently the Chief Revenue Officer and Head of Entertainment at Media General’s Federated Media, will serve as Nylon’s President and Chief Revenue Officer. Among other responsibilities, Elden will oversee Nylon’s print, content, social, and digital operations, including original programming for TV and digital. That will include a heavy emphasis on Nylon’s social media platforms. Meanwhile, Nylon has inked a deal with UTA.
Last month, in the face of increasing competition, the CEO of a pioneering live-streaming app announced that his company would shift course, turning away from individual live-streaming and focusing on live interaction and conversation. Which app was it? You can find the answer here.
