With years left on their current deal, CBS and Turner Broadcasting made a play for another eight in an agreement with the NCAA valued at $8.8 billion to extend their rights to host the Men’s College Basketball Championship tournament through 2032. The extension will see Turner and CBS Sports offer the annual event “across any platform within their respective portfolios, including those to be created over the life of the agreement.” In addition, CBS Sports and Turner will continue to manage and collaborate on the NCAA’s corporate marketing program while Turner will continue to manage March Madness Live and NCAA.com, along with major events surrounding NCAA championships, including the NCAA March Madness Fan Fest and Music Festival. Meanwhile, all opening-, first- and second-round games will continue to be shown across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV with Turner and CBS splitting coverage of the regional semifinals and regional finals each year while the Final Four national semifinals and national championship will continue to alternate between CBS and Turner each year.
“The extension of our current agreement will allow our more than 1,100 NCAA member colleges and universities to continue to support student-athletes on 19,000 teams across 24 sports,” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “We have a diverse membership with varying resource levels, and this extension will assist our campuses as they provide pathways to opportunity in higher education and beyond for nearly a half a million young men and women each year.”
DIRECTV is offering customers MLB in 4K, announcing that a slate of MLB Network Showcase games will be carried live in the format beginning with Friday’s Dodgers/Giants matchup, called by Bob Costas, Harold Reynolds, Tom Verducci and Sam Ryan. This will mark the first-ever live 4K UHD telecast of a Major League Baseball game in the US with up to 25 games set to be shown this season in 4K UHD. "The 4K UHD experience on DIRECTV will bring America’s pastime to life like never before in the convenience of the living room," said Dan York, chief content officer, AT&T Entertainment Group. "As a leader in sports programming, we’re continuing to deliver more live events in 4K UHD and finding new ways to entertain our customers."
Marv Albert is back calling Olympic basketball this summer, marking the first time since 1996 for NBC Olympics’ coverage if the Games. The AP reports that Albert will be joined by analyst Doug Collins and reporter Craig Sager for the U.S. team’s games, Meanwhile, Ann Meyers will call her fifth straight Olympics when she serves as the analyst for women’s basketball, joining play-by-play announcer Marc Zumoff and reporter Ros Gold-Onwude.
ESPN selected Todd McShay to stick around for a while, locking in the college football analyst to a multi-year agreement to remain with the company, where he will continue to make regular appearances on NFL Insiders, NFL Live, and SportsCenter in advance of the 2016 NFL Draft. During the NFL Draft, he will offer analysis for SportsCenter before and after Round 1, and join Mel Kiper, Jr. on ESPN’s main set for Rounds 2-7. In addition, McShay will continue working on ESPN and ABC college football telecasts in the fall.
With the NHL regular season in the books, NBC Sports reports that NBCSN saw, thanks to its Wednesday Night Rivalry and Sunday Night Hockey offerings, viewership rank as the most-watched full regular season in network history, and the most-watched on cable since the 1993-94 season. The channel averaged 378,000 viewers, according to Nielsen, and was up 8% over the 2014-15 campaign. NBCSN’s 24 exclusive Wednesday Night Rivalry telecasts averaged 608,000 viewers, up 8, while NBCSN’s 13 Sunday Night Hockey matchups averaged 491,000 viewers, up 28% vs the 2014-15 Sunday game average.
Sunday’s FS1 UFC Fight Night, headlined by Junior Dos Santos’s decision victory over Ben Rothwell, drew 781,000 viewers and 424,000 in the Adults 18-49 demo to the channel, more than doubling last April’s Saturday afternoon Fight Night in both metrics. That ranks as the most-watched daytime Fight Night of the four on FS1 to date in both metrics.

The annual NHL Awards Show is booking a new venue, and will take place at The Hard Rock Hotel this year, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The event takes place on June 22 at The Joint and marks the fourth different venue the NHL has used since it began coming to Las Vegas in 2009 for its postseason celebration.
Sunday sees CBS offer an hour-long special at 2p, dubbed Making Cancer History presented by MD Anderson Cancer Center. The special examines the impact cancer has had on the PGA TOUR and what the TOUR and MD Anderson are doing to help combat the disease through fundraising and awareness.with stories focusing on the likes of: Daniel Berger, Smylie Kaufman, Mark Rolfing & Peter Kostis and more.

Get ready for jersey ads. NBA owners are set to vote this week on placing ads on jerseys for the 2017-18 season, according to ESPN and is expected to pass. The sponsored patch would be placed in a 2.5-by-2.5-inch patch on the left shoulder. According to the report, the proposal to owners would see teams to keep 50% of the sponsorship money from the jersey ads while the other half would be added to the revenue-sharing pool for all teams.
The NHL saw GEICO has renew as the Official Automobile Insurance Partner of the league in the US. GEICO will serve as a multiyear sponsor of signature League events including the NHL Winter Classic, NHL Stadium Series, NHL All-Star Skills Competition and NHL All-Star Game; as well as a presenting sponsor of an intermission report on NHL Network game broadcasts throughout the regular season and post-season. GEICO will also serve as the presenting partner of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for all game broadcasts on NBC, NBCSN, NHL Network, USA Network and CNBC.
Active lifestyle company Tough Mudder locked in deals with Microsoft Band, Snapchat and Livestream, with Microsoft Band becoming the Official Smartwatch and Fitness Tracker Partner of Tough Mudder for its 2016 season in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. FS1’s NASCAR Race Hub will broadcast live from Smithfield Foods’ headquarters in Smithfield, VA on April 21 leading in to the Sprint Cup Series race in Richmond. Smithfield Foods sponsors the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion, and Richard Petty will be on-site to appear on the show.

NBC Olympics is tapping Spectra Logic to provide video archive and disaster recovery services for its production of the Summer Olympic Games. NBC Olympics will have two Spectra Logic T50e tape libraries onsite at the compound to conduct data restores, and to capture and access data from NBC Olympics’ live broadcasts of the Rio Olympic Games. In total, NBC Olympics archives include 6 PB of data, including an estimated total of 1 PB of footage of Olympic Games content.
ONE CONNXT snared a season-long agreement with ONE World Sports to provide video transport services for the New York Cosmos from origination in Long Island. “After careful review, we chose ONE CONNXT’s transport solution to send the Cosmos’ home games back to our headquarters in Stamford and ultimately to our viewership in the United States,” stated Bob Brown, Vice President Production and Operations for ONE World Sports. “We are extremely excited about the quality, speed and low cost of ONE CONNXT’s video transport capabilities and they have a proven track record handling our most coveted properties, and now the New York Cosmos.”
Global broadcasting platform Azubu is targeting 4K, launching an all new online media player yesterday, dubbed Everest, that allows eSports fans to watch eSports broadcasters and streams in up to Full HD at 60 fps resolution across multiple platforms while also allowing viewers to watch multiple streams at the same time “without missing a frame of quality.” In addition, its live DVR feature allows viewers to rewind or record live broadcasts. “In the past, broadcasting live video across multiple platforms while maintaining high resolution and frame rate consistency has been a serious challenge. We set out to tackle this issue, as well as add many other features and enhancements to our new player,” said Reed Anderson, chief technology officer at Azubu. “With Everest, I’m thrilled to say we’ve developed the most advanced eSports video player in the world, giving broadcasters the tools to be both creative and optimize monetization, and viewers the most robust player available, completely tailored to the eSports streaming experience.”
Activision Blizzard Media Networks announced that MLG’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship (set new viewership records during its March 30-April 3 broadcast from Columbus, snaring 71 million video views. Audiences also watched a record-breaking 45 million hours of live broadcast and set a new record of 1.6 million concurrent viewers across OTT, web, mobile and in-game streaming during this year’s event. That easily shatters the previously- record of 34 million hours viewed and 1.3 million concurrent viewers set at the 2015 CS:GO Major in Cologne.
Xbox and 343 Industries are teaming up this year for the Halo Championship Series Pro League. ESPN reports that the league will feature 14 of the game’s biggest teams — eight in North America and six in Europe — and will begin May 31 and end July 28 with a $250,000-per-season prize pool. The finals will occur in Los Angeles in July. At the 2017 World Championship, the prize pool will be $1 million with potential crowdfunding to increase the pot. ESL will broadcast the tournament three days a week.
