Viacom also wants its CEO, Robert Bakish, in the second position, behind Les Moonves, as president and COO; CBS had asked that its COO, Joseph Ianniello, fill the slot. Hari Kondabolu, maker of 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu, which questions the South Asian character voiced by a white actor (Hank Azaria) in The Simpsons, was not happy with Sunday’s episode of the Fox comedy. In it, Marge heavily edits a book that used to contain stereotypes, “Something that started out decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect,” says Lisa. Turning to a photo of Apu, she asks, “What can you do?” Tweeted Kondabolu on Monday, “Wow. ‘Politically Incorrect?’ That’s the takeaway from my movie & the discussion it sparked? Man, I really loved this show. This is sad.” And then, “TO THE JOURNALISTS WHO HAVE ASKED ME FOR A PUBLIC STATEMENT ABOUT LAST NIGHT’S SIMPSONS EPISODE, I JUST WANT SAY: ‘Congratulations to the Simpsons for being talked about & being seen as relevant again.’”

Mom, averaging 11 million viewers this season, was renewed for season 6 on CBS. “Mom has been a lynchpin comedy for us over the last several years,” said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “It’s a fearless series that tackles provocative social issues with laughter and grace, and a large, loyal audience has followed….this series just keeps getting better.”

Quad, which aired its season 2 finale on March 27, was canceled by BET. The college-set drama had averaged .2 among A18-49 and 553,000 viewers, down 30% from its freshman run.

The inauguration of the $250 million Telemundo Center in Miami was yesterday. The new, 500,000-square-foot global headquarters, with 15 separate studios, will host news, sports, entertainment and digital productions, with the building designed to “inspire employee collaboration, mobility and flexibility” (and to withstand a Category 5 hurricane). In addition to production space will be the offices, broadcast and production operations for Telemundo Network, Telemundo Global Studios, Unverso, digital media and NBCUniversal International Group’s Latin American offices.

Launched earlier this year, Project Innovation is presented by The NBCUniversal Foundation and NBC and Telemundo owned stations located in 11 markets.

ADVERTISING & AGENCIES

Procter & Gamble is looking to cut costs and boost efficiency by building a dedicated creative agency for its North America fabric care business that includes team members from different companies. The plan calls for employees from Saatchi & Saatchi, Grey, Marina Maher Communications and Hearts and Science to all work together in offices in New York and P&G’s HQ, Cincinnati, starting in July. “We need to continue to raise the bar on creativity and the ability to reach consumers in a new way,” said Marc Pritchard, chief brand officer at P&G. “The way things are moving, it’s much more mass reach but with greater one-to-one precision and far more creative engagement with consumers. It’s a new model. That requires new agency models.”

DIGITAL DATA

YouTube is under fire from consumer watchdog groups, who are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the service’s parent Google for alleged violations to the children’s privacy laws. The complaint alleges Google is violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and has made “substantial profits” corralling information about tens of millions of kids and targeting advertising toward them. YouTube yesterday issued a statement saying it’s reviewing the complaint, and pointing out its terms of service state the service is not for kids younger than 13. “Protecting kids and families has always been a top priority for us,” a YouTube spokesperson said. “Because YouTube is not for children, we’ve invested significantly in the creation of the YouTube Kids app to offer an alternative specifically designed for children.”

A new version of the YouTube Kids app will include only videos that have been curated, rather than algorithmically suggested, reports BuzzFeed. Parents would be able to choose the whitelisted version, and presumably not have to worry about their kids being exposed to profanity, sexually explicit material or conspiracy theorists.

Cinedigm has launched a 24/7 digital-first gaming and esports WHAM Network on Xumo, Twitch, and web and mobile devices. Companies looking for a piece of that multibillion-dollar esports pie can find out how to profit from the phenomenon at the Esports Business Summit, taking place October 1-3 in Las Vegas. For info, go here.

Local TV news is in a strong position, with increased staffing (unlike newspapers), strong revenue and dropping costs, according to a study from the Knight Foundation, “What’s Next for Local News?”, that was the topic of a discussion at NAB. “One of the top findings of our study was that social doesn’t appear to cannibalize the newscast,” said Deborah Wenger, a university professor who worked on the report, adding, “there is a clear relationship between high levels of Facebook engagement, as defined by total actions and higher newscast ratings.”

In a SmithGeiger survey, the news was also good for local news, with 53% of respondents saying local news programs were their #1 most trusted source of news, significantly more than any other outlet. And the difference across age groups was minimal – 56% of A18-24, 53% of A25-34, 54% of A35-54 and 51% of A45-54 rated local news their top source.
