Good morning. It’s Friday April 8, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NFL released its 65-game 2016 preseason schedule, which will offer a lineup of eight nationally televised preseason games. The matchups begin on Aug. 7 on ESPN with the Hall of Fame Game at 8p, pitting the Packers/Colts. ESPN is also set to offer the Rams return to LA vs. Dallas on Aug. 13. Meanwhile, NBC receives the Falcons/Dolphins on Aug. 25 and the Bengals/Jaguars on Aug. 28, both at 8p. CBS will carry the Browns/Buccaneers on Aug. 26 and Titans/Raiders on Aug. 27, both at 8p. FOX, meanwhile, receives a doubleheader featuring Chargers/Vikings on Aug. 28 at 1p, followed by Cardinals/Texans at 4p.

ON THE AIR

NBCSN saw Wednesday’s Red Wings/Flyers faceoff average 816,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. That marks the channel’s second-best numbers this year, not counting opening night. Viewers also consumed 2.6 million minutes via NBC Sports Live Extra, the second-most for a regular season game.

Elsewhere under the NBCUniversal tree, Telemundo locked in an extension with sportscaster and commentator Sammy Sadovnik. The multi-year deal will see him locked in to the Telemundo and NBC Universo teams to cover the likes of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.

NBA TV lined up a special free preview for viewers, opening the door for more fans to watch the matchup between the Warriors/Spurs on Sunday at 7p. The preview will be available throughout the weekend via leading cable, satellite and telco distributors.

After awarding US Attorney General Loretta Lynch with its Golden Blazer Award, The Men in Blazers Show will welcome her to the program in Monday at 10p on NBCSN. Lynch became the third recipient of the annual honor, which is awarded annually to the person who has “dedicated themselves to advancing the sport of soccer in the United States of America.” The full Men in Blazers podcast featuring Lynch will be released on April 21.

Bellator Kickboxing: Torino has its voices, with the promotion locking in Bellator MMA heavyweight Matt Mitrione and Boston Celtics voice Sean Grande as the broadcast duo for its inaugural kickboxing event on April 16. The event will be carried on Spike on April 22 at 11p.

Meanwhile, SiriusXM is turning to Brian Stann, a former UFC middleweight contender to host a new weekly show on SiriusXM’s combat sports and entertainment channel, SiriusXM Rush. Toe-2-Toe with Brian Stann debuts April 12 runs every Tuesday from 6-8p, offering the latest news from the world of MMA and interviews.

NBC Sports Group announced plans to cover the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series starting May 7. More than four hours of coverage will starts at 2p on NBC Sports Live Extra, before continuing oon May 8 on NBCSN. Meanwhile, NBC carries a highlight show on May 21. Todd Harris handles play-by-play for all America’s Cup World Series coverage from New York, and will be joined by analyst and former America’s Cup sailor Ken Read.

Anheuser-Busch InBev and Delta Air Lines will both sponsor the Copa America Centenario this summer. Bloomberg reports that the deals, brokered by Soccer United Marketing. “To have these companies stand with us, it sends a message to global football that we know how to put on a tournament that is fair and transparent,” SUM President Kathy Carter said, noting that more sponsorship deals are expected to be announced before the tournament starts June 3.

Davidson College selected Learfield to serve as its multimedia rights partner through the 2026-27 athletic season. Learfield will officially begin representing the Wildcats on July 1 with plans to launch Davidson Sports Properties to manage the Wildcats’ comprehensive rights including signage, digital, corporate sponsorships, television and radio play-by-play, and coaches’ shows.

DIGITAL/STREAMING

The United Soccer League locked in a partnership with Sportradar designed to “proactively safeguard the USL’s nearly 450 matches scheduled for the 2016 season.” Sportradar offers detection and prevention of match manipulation and the company’s Fraud Detection System will monitor all regular season and postseason USL matches for any potential manipulations. “The USL has more than doubled in size in the last two years to 29 teams and has become the largest soccer division in the world, so our partnership with Sportradar is a natural next step in the evolution of our league,” said USL CEO Alec Papadakis. “We are excited about the USL’s future but we also recognize the importance in being vigilant and protecting our players and teams and the overall integrity of our League.”

WWE saw WrestleMania 32 rank as the most social event in WWE history, according to Nielsen Social with 2.5 million mentions on Twitter throughout the day and 1.3 million mentions during the broadcast alone, for upticks of 50% and 18% year-over-year, respectively. In addition, WWE-related content saw more than 250 million video views across WWE.com, WWE App and social media during WrestleMania Week, for a rise of 122% over 2015.

FOX Sports is offering multiple FanView driver channels for this weekend’s NASCAR events at Texas Motor Speedway via FOX Sports GO. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be the subject of one channel for both his NASCAR XFINITY Series entry on Friday and well as his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series ride on Saturday. Brad Keselowski also hosts a channel on Friday, with a driver TBD on Saturday also are available.

ESPORTS/GAMING

Endemol Shine Beyond’s SMASHER Network launches season two of its eSports series Legends of Gaming with a “first-of-its-kind” virtual reality experience. The format will feature both video game play and player introductions in 360 while season one host Toby Turner returns alongside current host Syndicate to take on a pair lucky fans in Super Mario Kart. Viewers can get the full immersive VR experience through the YouTube mobile app or by using Google cardboard. The second season will pit eight of the nation’s top gamers competing in a newly designed, six-round tournament featuring 24 of the hottest games with fellow gamers set to include TmarTn and Terroriser as well as Reckless Tortuga, Gassy Mexican, Moo Snuckel, Misses Mae, mcsportzhawk and TheZombiUnicorn all set to join this season.
 
EA Sports, the NFL Players Association and Discovery Education are teaming up to host an interactive live virtual field trip on April 14 for students nationwide for The Magic of Madden Virtual Field Trip. The event features Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and allows middle school students the chance to go behind-the-scenes at EA Sports Tiburon Studios in Orlando to explore the science, technology, engineering, art and math powering its Madden NFL series where engineers, animators, designers, analysts and producers will discuss their career paths and applications of STEAM in bringing the game to life.
