Longtime MLB CMO Jacqueline Parkes is stepping aside, announcing her resignation as the league’s top marketing maven, a job she’s held since 2008 when she was named its first-ever CMO. Her run in the position includes initiatives such as the formation of the MLB Fan Cave, MLB’s brand advertising, and tent pole marketing platforms such as Jackie Robinson Day. According to the AP, MLB said her resignation is effective May 1 and that the league will not immediately seek to fill her position.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will once again see all games offered nationally, with contests slated to run across NBC, NBCSN, USA Network, CNBC and NHL Network when the postseason begins on April 13. Overall, NBC Sports Group is set to carry as many as 105 playoff games and possibly more than 260 hours of programming, with NBC on deck NBC to offer up to nine playoff games in primetime. Programming will also mark the first time that NBC will present Stanley Cup Playoff games in primetime immediately following coverage of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Meanwhile, USA Network will offer coverage for the second consecutive season on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, while CNBC delivers games Thursday through Monday nights, when necessary. USA and CNBC will be utilized during first- and second-round coverage only while NBCSN will be the primary home of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, offering coverage of one or two games virtually every night of the first round. For the Stanley Cup Final, NBCSN will present two Stanley Cup Final games, while NBC will air up to five Stanley Cup Final contests.
CMT is servicing NASCAR, announcing a six-hour, three-night special event dedicated to the sport via NASCAR: The Rise of American Speed, premiering May 8, May 15 and May 22 at 10p on the channel. The slate comes from Stephen David Entertainment and will offer “a unique look into NASCAR’s legendary beginnings, but in the spirit of racing, it is a no-holds-barred account of the sport’s early pioneers and ascension to national prominence” via archival footage, re-enactments and interviews with NASCAR personalities and experts.
ESPN is adding a Warriors/Grizzlies battle to Saturday’s lineup at 8p. The matchup joins a lineup of programming that will include the Cavaliers/Bulls in the season finale of NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC at 8:30p. Mike Breen, analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, and reporter Doris Burke will call the Warriors/Grizzlies telecast, while Mike Tirico and Hubie Brown will offer commentary for the Cavaliers/Bulls game. The evening will also include the 2016 Frozen Four National Championship, which shifts to ESPN2, while eSports event Heroes of the Dorm: “Heroic Four” heads to ESPNU.
MLB Network scored its most-watched Opening Day ever on Monday, as flagship program MLB Tonight ran 12 hours of live coverage of the day’s events and audiences growing 15% from the prior year. Overall total day viewership grew 4% over the previous opening day best in 2015.
NBC Sports Group’s US-based Premier League team will once again hit the road to go on-location in the United Kingdom. From April 16-19, the second year of the road trip kicks off the company’s presentation of nine Premier League match days over a 10-day span (April 16-25), including six consecutive days of live matches. Among the talent heading to the UK will be Premier League Live host Arlo White and analysts Robbie Earle, Kyle Martino and Robbie Mustoe. Earle, Martino and Mustoe will each call a match with White, marking the first Premier League match call for each with NBC Sports Group. They will join NBC’s UK-based team of Lee Dixon, Graeme Le Saux and Steve Bower for more than 21 hours of live on-site Premier League coverage across four days.
ESPN’s drive to the NFL Draft will include more than 110 hours of programming in the three weeks leading up to the event (April 28-30). Programming is set to include the seventh season of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp series, SportsCenter Specials, the NFL Films-produced Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL (April 12), new NFL Matchup: Draft Specials, and ESPN Sports Science: Draft Combine on April 20 at 8p.
Former Atlanta Braves starting pitcher and four-time All-Star Tim Hudson signed on to join the FOX Sports South and FOX Sports Southeast telecast team for select games during the 2016 MLB regular season. Hudson debuts April 9, joining play-by-play announcer Chip Caray and analyst Joe Simpson when the Braves host the Cardinals.
The All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival unveiled this year’s lineup. The seventh edition of the fest spans April 14-17 and will take place at LA Live Regal Stadium 14 in downtown Los Angeles, showcasing 94 entries from 16 countries in the categories of films, documentaries and short documentaries. Time Inc.’s Sports Illustrated Group is launching The Fashionable 50, celebrating the most stylish people in sports via a star-studded event and a cross-platform editorial franchise. The event takes place on April 12th in NYC following SI’s unveiling of the inaugural Fashionable 50 list set to run across all SI platforms beginning April 11th. The initiative is sponsored exclusively by JCPenney with the evening set to include a red carpet entrance featuring select members of the Fashionable 50, fashion models and other celebrities. "It is, to our mind, an unprecedented cultural event in which sports, long on the leading edge of style, takes center stage in the fashion conversation," said Sports Illustrated Managing Editor Chris Stone.
With the Masters teeing off today, AT&T debuted a new ad staring defending Masters champion and AT&T-sponsored athlete Jordan Spieth, titled “Caddie.” The ad showcases “the many people that make up Team Spieth, as well as all the ways that Jordan uses the AT&T network to stay connected to themin this case his caddie, swing coach, parents,” and Tony Romo. The company will also run Jordan’s AT&T “It Can Wait” spot that debuted last year during the tournament.
LIDS Sports Group is teaming up with MLB to offer fans two weeks of MLB.TV Premium free with any MLB purchase of $50 or more. The offer, which expires April 25, is exclusive to LIDS Club Members.
Arkansas State is tapping Learfield as the school’s exclusive multimedia rights holder for the next 10 years. Learfield will establish a local Red Wolves Sports Properties team that will manage all aspects of the Red Wolves’ comprehensive rights moving forward, including signage, digital, corporate sponsorships, television and radio play-by-play, and coaches’ shows.
Boston University kicks off its Play It Forward Summit on April 15, featuring the executives behind all four of Boston’s professional teams The Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots – on the eve of Boston Marathon weekend. Andrea Kremer hosts the event, which will feature industry executives, athletes and experts discussing sports technology, sports law, sports journalism and sports safety, including Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner, Katie Nolan, Chris Nowinski, and more. “I’m thrilled we can share our vision of the future in sports communication, featuring a breadth of knowledge that far exceeds what happens on the field or on the court," said Andrea Kremer, Andrew R. Lack Fellow at Boston University. "Sports touches so many other areas of interest. It behooves our students to be conversant in topics related to safety, technology and law to create a well-rounded communication professional."
The United States Olympic Committee unveiled a new documentary series dubbed Olympic Hometowns in America, a weekly web series that will run on TeamUSA.org. The slate was produced in cooperation with NBC Sports Films and visits seven US cities that have deep connections to the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Overall, more than 20 episodes will run. “Olympic and Paralympic tradition runs deep in cities and towns large and small across the United States, and we are excited to work with the great storytellers at NBC to share the stories in Olympic Hometowns in America," said Brian Gordon, USOC’s managing director of marketing and USOC Productions. “We want to continue to focus on the local level and tell the stories of how these cities rally to support our athletes and regionally relevant sport programs in the lead-up to Rio and beyond.”
Omnigon was tapped by Rugby International Marketing to develop its all-new OTT video platform, The Rugby Channel. The platform will look to offer action to the US audience. The offering will roll out in two phases. Phase one is live now on iOS and Android mobile devices and the web at TheRugbyChannel.tv; while phase two kicks in in June. Content includes live match streams, real time play-by-play and head-to-head match stats, view archive match videos, share across social platforms, and receive custom content.
Formula Drift is partnering with Network A to launch the first digital and mobile channel dedicated exclusively to drifting. The FormulaDrift channel will offer livestreams of all of the North American events as well as select events from Japan and around the world as well as highlights, interviews, classics, and original programming.
Competitive gaming platform FACEIT is partnering with Twitch to launch eSports program, the eSports Championship Series. The initiative’s flagship league, ECS – Counter-Strike, will become the first professional eSports league to offer teams co-ownership, with 20 teams overall, including 10 from North America and 10 from Europe. “Players and teams are the heart of the eSports community and deserve the opportunity to reap the rewards of their hard work and dedication to grow eSports into a mainstream phenomenon,” said Michele Attisani, co-founder of FACEIT. “We make the community our first priority and as such, we’re excited to support the first esports league that positions teams as co-owners.”

Learfield added two VPs to its Southeast Region headquarters. Joining the company will be Fred Steck, who most recently served 10 years as national sales manager for FOX Sports South/FOX Sports Southeast Network, as VP, national sales for its Southeast Region while Keith Bradshaw, from Atlanta Spirit LLC, was named VP for Learfield’s East Region to oversee nearly 10 of the company’s collegiate relationships.
Troika announced today that Tobin Kirk has joined the company as Managing Executive Producer where he will oversee all production at Troika’s 25,000 square foot facility in Hollywood, including the creative studio and live-action production subsidiary, Troika Production Group.
