04.02.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday April 2, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NHL is officially on the clock for its post-season, with NBC Spots Group detailing its coverage plans for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For the fourth straight year, every NHL Stanley Cup Playoff game will be presented nationally with as many as 105 playoff games and potentially more than 260 hours of programming starting April 15. As previously reported, USA Network gets in on the action this year, joining NBC, NBCSN, CNBC and NHL Network marking the first time USA Network will carry NHL Stanley Cup Playoff coverage since 1985. USA Network will provide game coverage on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, as needed, throughout the playoffs.
NBCSN serves as the primary home of the playoffs, offering coverage of one or two games on most nights during the first round. NBC offers up seven exclusive first-round broadcasts during the weekends of April 18-19 and April 25-26, including two Saturday primetime broadcasts on April 18 and April 25 at 8p. Skipping ahead to the Conference Finals, NBC and NBCSN will become the exclusive carriers, with NBC slated to broadcast afternoon games on May 16-17, and a primetime game on Saturday, May 23, at 8p. The Stanley Cup Final will see NBC will showcse Game 1, Game 4, and Games 5-7 (if necessary), with NBCSN televising Games 2-3. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, and Pierre McGuire will call the series.
FOX Sports extended its ties with the World Endurance Championship through 2017 in a move that will boost coverage this year, with FOX set to broadcast all rounds of the WEC live in 2015 on its satellite, cable and online platforms. FOX will also showcase a 52-minute highlights show after each event. The agreement will also see The Le Mans 24 Hours will be covered live in its entirety across a combination of FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and FOX Sport GO. The first event from Silverstone will run live on FOX Sports 1 on April 12 at 7a.
WWE touted more records for WrestleMania 31, citing new highs viewership, attendance, social and digital media engagement and merchandise sales. The company says that the annual event was watched by more than 1.3 million global households on WWE Network alone to mark the most-watched WrestleMania in history, with PPV data still forthcoming, and pushed Monday Night Raw to its most-watched episode in nearly three years with 5.4 million viewers. WrestleMania 31 was the most social event in WWE history. O the social media front, it saw a record 142 worldwide Twitter trends (up +106 percent vs. last year), including 10 No. 1 worldwide trends. WWE also generated $3.3 million in WrestleMania merchandise revenue, for a markup of 27% over year ago numbers.
CBS found its talent for its upcoming coverage of Premier Boxing Champions this Saturday at 3p. CBS Sports Network’s Brent Stover will team with Paul Malignaggi, who will handle ringside analysis alongside Virgil Hunter and Kevin Harlan for microphone duties. The April show marks the first appearance of live boxing on the network since 2012.
Speaking of the PBC, NBCSN debuts a new PBC: Corner to Corner today at 10p. The one-hour program offers an inside look at the lives of boxers Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, Andy Lee and Peter Quillin, as they prepare for their PBC on NBC debut on April 11 at 8:30p.
NBCSN also announced that its live coverage of the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix scored as the most-watched overnight F1 race on cable in 18 years. The race averaged 384,000 viewers from 2:30-4:55a, for a 55% spike over last year’s viewership of the race. It also marked the most-watched overnight F1 race since 1997 and delivered a 0.24 household rating, up 41% over 2014.
DIRECTV is fine-tuning its Masters Experience for this year’s 2015 Masters Tournament. The company announced that, starting April 9, it will offer exclusive six-screens-in-one HD Masters Mosaic channel featuring CBS Sports and ESPN telecasts. Another new feature will see the interactive app offer faster download speeds and deliver more stats, including the number of titles and best Masters finishes for the top 10 players going into the Tournament, along with links to the Leader Board, Scorecard, Groups, Tee Times and Player Bios.
ESPN and ESPN2 each drew double digit spikes in average 24-hour audience for the first quarter, according to Nielsen. ESPN grew 11%, averaging 1,033,000, while ESPN2 swelled 10% with an average of 282,000 viewers, according to the company.
The 27th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, from Intersport, will run on ESPN tonight at 7p, featuring the dunking and sharp-shooting talents of 24 of the nation’s top college basketball players. Th network’s broadcasting team see Brad Nessler (play-by-play), Dan Dakich (analyst), Sean Farnham (analyst) and Shannon Spake (sideline) bhind he microphone.
Sportsman Channel and sister network World Fishing Network will be available to DISH customers as a free preview from April 2 – May 5. The preview will be available on DISH in high definition and standard definition on Channel 395 (Sportsman Channel) and standard definition Channel 394 (World Fishing Network).

The USSA locked in a new pair of sponsors, with L.L. Bean and CRAFT Sportswear signing on for a multi-year partnership with the U.S. Cross Country Ski Team and U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team that runs through 2018. As official supplier to the U.S. Ski Team, L.L.Bean will provide insulated outerwear and rainwear, as well as casual products and hats. CRAFT will develop customized World Cup and Olympic race suits and performance jackets and pants. Both companies will share responsibility for summer training products and base layers.
The Collegiate Licensing Company, the licensing affiliate of IMG College, working with the NCAA, announced plans to keep the marketplace clear of potential counterfeit and unlicensed merchandise ahead of the Final Four. CLC “will work closely with Indianapolis and Tampa Bay officials, as well as Homeland Security Investigations, to patrol the areas in search of counterfeit merchandise and any other unauthorized use of trademarks owned by the NCAA and the participating institutions. All counterfeit merchandise is subject to seizure.” The company announced that, when purchasing NCAA Final Four merchandise, consumers should look for the “Officially Licensed Collegiate Product” hologram somewhere on the product or hangtag, an intact tag and the name of the manufacturer on the product.
There’s a new partner for FOX Sports, with AOL announcing a video content partnership with the company to distribute video that includes content from @TheBuzzer, Garbage Time, various FOX Sports Digital Originals, and select game highlights. As part of this deal, AOL and FOX Sports will work to co-develop content experiences tied to major sporting events throughout the year, and provide sponsors with new opportunities to garner extended reach and high engagement across screens.
OneUp Sports acquired Tixers, the intermediary ticketing outlet, in a move that will blend OneUp’s innovative team and league app platforms with Tixers ticket exchange platform to allow fans to swap unusable tickets for credit that can be redeemed for future sports and entertainment events.
The Washington Capitals are launching a new 24-hour radio channel, Caps Radio 24/7 on the team’s mobile app and TuneIn Radio. Content will include live game audio and exclusive Capitals-related hockey content throughout the day as well as features such as songs heard during games inside Verizon Center.
ARRIS Group announced that the company’s technology and services will help drive NASCAR Productions via equipment for Internet services at NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events this season. Each NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team will receive an ARRIS SURFBoard SB6183, and ARRIS’s E6000 Converged Edge Router to serve as the hub for delivering all services to the modems.
The NFL determined during its Annual Meeting that it will research the use of fixed cameras and stadium video in replay systems. NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported that the league will start research and development on Monday into adding cameras to the goal line and other areas for replay.
Vizrt is partnering with Reality Check Systems for an integrated workflow for sports broadcasts that mixes Vizrt’s Viz Libero and RCS’ LaunchPad touch screen. Viz Libero will now offer immediate access to its clips in LaunchPad’s touchscreen monitors to offer real-time illustrative replays, charts, diagrams and 3D animations. The integration will be showcased at NAB 2015 at Vizrt’s booth SL2417.
