CYNOPSISSPORTS
04.02.14 Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 2, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Here comes the teamcast. Turner Sports and CBS Sports unveiled plans for the upcoming Final Four teamcasts that will air Saturday with coverage beginning at 6p. TBS carries the National Semifinal games on Saturday, April 5, with three hours of pre-game coverage starting at 3p and Jim Nantz calling the action for the national telecast with analysts Greg Anthony and Steve Kerr, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson.
The specialized teamcasts, with telecasts specifically geared toward the individual teams competing in both games will run simultaneously on TNT and truTV. The 6p Florida Teamcast on TNT will see David Steele call the action with Mark Wise and reporter James Bates. Conversely, the Connecticut Teamcast on truTV features Eric Frede on the microphone with Conny Marshall and Swin Cash. Following that game, the Kentucky Teamcast on TNT will see Rob Bromley on play-by-play with Rex Chapman as analyst and Dave Baker. The Wisconsin-themed telecast has Wayne Larrivee calling the game with Mike Kelley.
Tiger may be out, but CBS Sports announced plans for its 59th consecutive year of broadcasting the Masters. Coverage begins on the network with the third round on Saturday, April 12 at 3p and final-round coverage on the April 13 at 2p. For the 29th consecutive year Jim Nantz returns to host coverage and will join Sir Nick Faldo in the 18th hole tower. Additional voices include: Peter Oosterhuis at the 17th hole; Verne Lundquist, the 16th hole; David Feherty, the 15th hole and Highlight Shows; Bill Macatee, the 14th hole; Peter Kostis, the 13th hole; and Ian Baker-Finch at the 11th and 12th holes.
Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network will offer golf fans Masters on the Range, a live show originating from the Tournament Practice Range of Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta starting Monday, April 7 at noon and continuing each day through Sunday morning. In addition, for the second consecutive year, CBS Sports Network replays CBS Sports’ live broadcasts of the third and-final rounds of the Masters immediately following the conclusion of its coverage.
NBC Sports Group released its own plans for the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series this season, with new addition Paul Tracy now part of the broadcast team. This year’s coverage will see 13 races, doubleheaders in Houston and Toronto, as well as the season finale from Fontana. Tracy will serve as analyst for six races this year, beginning with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Other names will include lead motorsports play-by-play commentator Leigh Diffey back for a second season, as will Townsend Bell and Wally Dallenbach Jr. as analysts. Kelli Stavast also joins NBC Sports Group’s Verizon IndyCar Series broadcast team this season as a pit reporter where she will join Marty Snider, Jon Beekhuis and Kevin Lee, as well as Verizon IndyCar Series reporter Robin Miller.
First quarter was good to NBCSN, which was able to offer a record number of live programming hours that included the Sochi Winter Games, the NHL and the Premier League. That led to the channel’s three most-watched months on U.S. sports cable, averaging 215,000 Total Day viewers in the first quarter of 2014, and the most-watched quarter in the network’s history, according to live plus same day data released by The Nielsen Company. During that period (Dec.30-March 30), total day viewership spiked 231% over the same period a year ago, and ranking first among all cable networks in year-over-year increase. Even without Sochi, the network’s first quarter performance, according to the company, was still up 58% over 2013.
Speaking of which, NBCSN also had good news from Sunday night’s Blackhawks/Penguins game, which drew a 0.39 household score with an average of 715,000 viewers, up 70% from NBCSN’s 2013 Sunday NHL game average. That ranks as NBCSN’s second-most watched regular season Sunday night NHL game ever (behind Montreal/Boston on 3/3/13; 813,000).

Green will serve as a game analyst for CBS’ coverage of the NFL on CBS and contribute across multiple CBS Sports platforms including CBS Sports Network’s show, NFL Monday QB, and Sunday pre-game show, That Other Pregame Show. His on-air partner will be announced at a later date.
Monday night’s Diamondbacks/Giants game on FOX Sports Arizona produced the highest rating ever for a D-backs home opener on any network since 2004, according to Nielsen, delivering a 6.0 rating with a 10 share. That score is also good enough to mark the highest rated D-backs game of any kind on FOX Sports Arizona since the 2011 season

Leading up to the 2014 World Cup, ESPN took famed play-by-play commentator Ian Darke’s presence to new places, creating a video of Darke’s signature play calling and laying it as commentary against an awkward first date. The couple, meeting for the first time, engages in the requisite first-date banter as they clumsily navigate their way through dinner. And from the wine spillage, to the oversharing, to food caught between front teeth, "Darke’s melodious play-by-play makes each, unfortunate misstep feel like high drama." The video was developed by ESPN in collaboration with creative agency The Vault.
