IN THE NEWS

General Motors announced plans to hold an upfront event for minority-owned media companies, and “encourage existing and potential partners to submit an overview of their business for consideration by GM for deeper engagements.” GM added it has established a new set of criteria that “will allow for more flexibility based on the size and scale of the media organization.” The move comes after a group of Black media leaders bought full-page ads in the Detroit Free Press and Wall Street Journal last month calling for GM to increase their Black media spend; on Friday, GM reiterated its plans to spend 2% with Black-owned media in 2021, and 8% by 2025.

Ahead of Sunday’s Oscars broadcast on ABC, Disney Advertising said it had sold out of ad inventory – and postponing the event from February to April due to the pandemic didn’t hurt, according to Rita Ferro, President, Disney Advertising Sales. “The later date of the event allows consumers even more time to view the nominated films, than in year’s past, in the comfort of their homes,” noted Ferro. “It’s also paved the way for even more activations and enabled us to expand our ad offering for sponsors – across linear, digital and social – pre- and post-show.”

Elon Musk has been scheduled as host of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on May 8. The eccentric CEO of Tesla will be joined by musical guest Miley Cyrus.

BBC America has a new on-air look and brand identity, including the tagline, “Brit-ish,” celebrating the AMC Networks net’s dual British and American heritage. “This new refreshed work around our BBC America brand recognizes a British sensibility given a distinctly American twist that allows our unique ‘Brit-ish-ness’ to shine through,” said Blake Callaway, General Manager of BBC America.

The adult animation development teams at WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim and HBO Max have been combined. Suzanna Makkos is expanding her role as EVP, Original Comedy and Animation for HBO Max to include Adult Swim. “The adult animation boom is just starting, and by aligning our strengths and organizing as one, unified, best in class development team we are creating an unmatched, multiplatform destination for both creators and fans,” said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s Head of Original Content. “Adult Swim has created an iconoclastic adult animation brand, and that identity will not only be preserved, it will now be further fueled by HBO Max and Suzanna’s talented development leadership.”

How have consumer sentiments around the consumption of media changed during the pandemic? In a survey from Lucid, 63% of respondents said they purchased or added additional streaming TV services during the health crisis; not surprisingly, 66% said their streaming consumption increased. Eighty-three percent of those surveyed said television helped fill an entertainment void during the pandemic. What’s next? 64% said they don’t see their TV viewing habits changing once they are vaccinated.

CBS renewed warhorse NCIS: Los Angeles for season 13, and gave a straight-to-series order to “NCIS: Hawaii.” The new series, created/executive produced by “NCIS: New Orleans” executive producers/showrunners Christopher Silber and Jan Nash, as well as “SEAL Team” writer-producer Matt Bosack, follows the franchise’s first female lead.

Lester Holt has been named Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News. “There is simply no journalist held in greater esteem,” said NBC News President Noah Oppenheim in a note to staff. Holt has anchored the newscast since 2015.
