Apple is hosting a “Spring Loaded” event tomorrow, April 20. The invitations to the virtual event suggest it will focus on new iPads; there’s also speculation that augmented reality could be part of the presentation.

A new report on opt-in rates was cause for optimism in the mobile adtech world. An AppsFlyer survey asking users if they’d allow an app to track their activity found opt-on rates averaged a higher-than-expected 28% per app, with a median of 32%. Larger apps had higher opt-in rates, with the top 10%, by device count, scoring a 50% higher rate than the bottom 10%.

Google Assistant just got more helpful. The voice assistant is now able to locate and ring lost and silenced iPhones, not just Android devices, and complete restaurant orders.

Newsletter platform Substack has launched Substack Local, an initiative to help independent writers build local news publications based on the subscription model. Up to 30 local news writers will be chosen to participate in the program, which will provide each writer with mentorship from experienced journalists; business support such as subsidized access to health insurance, expert advice, and design services; and a cash advance designed to reduce the financial risk of starting a new business. “This is not a grants program, nor is it inspired by philanthropic intent,” said the company in a blog post. “Our goal is to foster an effective business model for independent local news that provides ample room for growth.”

A Black astronaut non-fungible token character, Aku, has been optioned for TV and film projects by Anonymous Content and Permanent Content. Aku, created by artist and former MLB player Micah Johnson, debuted in February and sold more than $2 million in NFT tokens during the one-day sale period. “This deal is such an empowering moment for creators everywhere,” said Johnson. “A small Black crypto community mobilized behind Aku at launch and told the world ‘This is a character we want in the world.’ And for Anonymous Content to recognize the magnitude of this movement and want to take the Aku story further makes me incredibly excited for our future together.”

Twitter experienced technical problems on Friday and Saturday. Posts cached in the app were visible, but users couldn’t like or comment on them. “We know that parts of Twitter still aren’t working for some of you,” said Twitter on Saturday. “We’re fixing an issue with our servers to get things back to normal soon.”

Digital-first news network Cheddar has rebranded to Cheddar News. A new tagline, “Look Forward,” emphasizes the network’s focus on the next generation of innovation. As part of the refocus, the network is partnering with the FIRST global robotics community as their exclusive media partner for the 2021 FIRST Innovation Challenge. “As people across the globe look to ‘what’s next’ in drastically evolving industries like science, medicine, technology, engineering and more, Cheddar News aims to be the go-to media source for this critical content, shining a light on the next generation of innovators and newsmakers who are changing the world,” said Jon Steinberg, President, News & Advertising, Altice USA. “

OpenVault, provider of industry analytics and SaaS technology solutions for broadband operators, announced an expansion of its relationship with Vyve Broadband, a communications services provider primarily serving rural communities in 16 states. Under the agreement, Vyve will expand their use of OpenVault’s cloud-based solutions and tools into newly acquired markets.

Veritone has extended its agreement with Audacy (fka Entercom), a scaled, multi-platform audio content and entertainment company. With Veritone Discovery, Audacy is able to rapidly visualize and correlate advertising efficacy for over 230 stations in 47 markets nationwide. “Veritone’s AI solutions have deepened our analytic capabilities and what we’re able to offer our clients and partners,” said Bob Phillips, Chief Revenue Officer at Audacy.

Microsoft announced plans to purchase Nuance Communications for $16 billion. Nuance, now focused on the medical field, provided speech recognition software behind Apple’s Siri. “Nuance provides the A.I. layer at the health care point of delivery and is a pioneer in the real-world application of enterprise A.I.,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Verizon and Univision announced a multi-year partnership that can deliver advanced 5G viewing experiences for fans of soccer league Liga MX. Through the partnership, Univision will exclusively launch the TUDN Vision content portal experience, where fans can portal through the stadium with 360 camera views. Verizon will also work with Univision to virtualize and enhance production processes over 5G, and partner with Univision on an Enhanced Data Analytics feature.

Yamaha and sports channel DAZN have launched “For The Fans Project,” for sports fans unable to attend events in stadiums. The project aims to establish a new style of watching games through remote cheering. From the latter half of April, various talk room events will be held in collaboration with DAZN’s original content, such as “YABECCHI STADIUM” and the “Baseball Trend Research Institute”, as well as other events that will bring together sports fans from various sports, and present campaigns linked to social networking sites.

Apple is in the early stages of developing a smart-home product that would combine an Apple TV set-top box with a HomePod speaker and include a camera for video conferencing through a connected TV, along with Apple TV box functions like watching video and gaming, according to Bloomberg. The company is also exploring the launch of a high-end speaker with a touch screen, reports Bloomberg.

ADVERTISING

TikTok is launching new e-commerce ad products which will enable brands to combine product catalog listings and branded videos. In addition, Dynamic Ad Product Ads will automatically retarget users with products based on their actions on publishers’ apps and websites.

Ad tech company GumGum, which targets OTT and CTV ads using contextual clues, reports it landed a $75 investment from Goldman Sachs Growth. “Cookies are being phased out and consumer privacy regulations are becoming more stringent,” said Goldman’s Allison Berardo. “We believe GumGum is well positioned to benefit from this market dynamic as its contextual technology offers an alternative for brands to deliver relevant and targeted advertising.”

Bad actors train bots to click on ads and drain budgets early in the morning, according to an analysis by CHEQ, looking at 30 campaigns from October 2020 to January 2021. The highest daily level of invalid clicks occurs at 4a. At this hour, 8% of all customer acquisition campaign clicks arrive from bots rather than real customers. Customer acquisition campaigns are cleanest at the end of the day by 11p, when bot attacks have almost halved (hitting a 4.7% rate of invalid clicks), according to the study.

Pikasso and and Broadsign have teamed to bring Pikasso’s network of DOOH displays to the Broadsign Reach programmatic DOOH supply-side-platform. With Pikasso’s DOOH inventory on-boarded to Reach, media buyers can opt to incorporate Pikasso’s roadside, shopping mall and transit inventory into their campaigns to expand audience reach across the Middle East.

Brands need to shift how they reach and engage with people online, according to a new study by Verizon Media, MAGNA and IPG Media Lab. “The Interactive Effect” reveals that interactive ads are an effective way to increase engagement, as they cast a wider audience net by quickly grabbing attention, and re-engaging those who have previously rejected the brand. The study found environment to be key when leveraging interactive ads: legitimacy and site quality can be the difference between people interacting with these ad formats or not. “Audiences are embracing interactive experiences, and expect the utility to learn more about a brand or message,” said Iván Markman, Verizon Media Chief Business Officer. “The study’s results illustrate consumer appetite for interaction and brands’ ability to deepen engagement, and we expect dynamic, creative, and responsive advertising trends to continue acceleration.”

Advertising platform SpotX announced it has developed a suite of custom audience data tools that enables media owners and advertisers to target audiences using first-party, third-party, or subscriber data in a privacy-compliant way. “We recognized early on that the CTV industry would need a supply-side data activation solution which is very different from how other areas of digital media operate,” said Mike Laband, SVP, Platform at SpotX. “Because we’ve created technology that takes all privacy regulations into consideration, we expect to see even more adoption moving forward, especially as additional privacy restrictions are enforced.

The ad-free version of discovery+ is now available on Amazon Prime Video in the US for $6.99/month. An ad-supported version will be available “in the coming months.”

Amazon spent $11 billion on content for its Prime services last year, up 41% from 2019. The company also announced it counts 200 million Prime members worldwide, up from 150 million in January 2020.

AVOD service Crackle Plus’ Crackle app has landed on Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex. The Crackle library includes studio films, classic TV series and originals.

TrillerNet, parent of social app Triller, acquired FITE, the live-event and PPV, SVOD, AVOD and streaming platform for sports and entertainment. The acquisition enables Triller to expand the reach of its AI-powered lifestyle and entertainment content and distribution ecosystem.

Televisa and Univision executives expanded on their plans to combine their current streaming businesses, which include Prende TV, Vix and Blim. Univision CEO Wade Davis said the programming on the new global OTT service, slated to launch in early 2022, will not overlap with Univision’s linear offerings. Televisa co-CEO Alfonso de Angoitia said John Malone’s Liberty Global is an investor in the new company, called Televisa-Univison, and will own 17 percent of the venture. Grupo Televisa is the largest stakeholder, with a 45 percent share. Investment firms Searchlight and ForgeLight, founded by Davis, will own 38 percent. Davis noted anticipated cost synergies of $200 million-$300 million should be realized by late 2022 or early 2023 and that the combined company expects to generate free cash flow of $5.5 billion.
