Gen.G is once again making headlines, announcing a $46 million round of funding that includes a lineup of investors in sports, entertainment and technology such as actor Will Smith. In addition to Smith, other new partners include Japanese soccer star Keisuke Honda’s Dreamers Fund, Los Angeles Clippers minority owner Dennis Wong, former Chairman of US Investments Alibaba Group Michael Zeisser, and MasterClass Co-Founder and CEO David Rogier. Additional participants include New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Conductive Ventures, Battery Ventures, Canaan Partners, SVB Capital, and Stanford University.

According to the team, Smith and Honda will join two-time NBA Champion and current Gen.G Player Management Advisor Chris Bosh in supporting the team’s creative and commercial endeavors, guiding the growth of the Gen.G brand and advising Gen.G players and content creators. The capital will be used to support ongoing expansion of Gen.G’s global footprint, the development of Gen.G’s youth esports academy program; and the launch of Gen.G’s Los Angeles headquarters opening in July 2019. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) has also been named as Gen.G’s banking partner and Gen.G announced the appointment of Martin Kim as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships.

ELEAGUE and Xbox teamed up for a new partnership designed to celebrate the Gears of War amid the release of Gears 5 later this year. ELEAGUE signed on to produce six, hour-long feature episodes spotlighting pro Gears of War competitions, including deeper looks into the lives of star players as they train and perform around the world. ELEAGUE Gears Summer Series: The Bonds and Betrayals of Brotherhood will debut June 14 at 11p on TBS. In addition to the TBS episodes, ELEAGUE will officially reveal new Gears 5 multiplayer gameplay when it hosts the latest title’s first-ever esports tournament, from July 13-14, with live coverage available on Twitch and B/R Live. The NBA 2K League announced that THE TURN powered by AT&T, the league’s second tournament of the season, will take the league to the west coast for the first time, running May 9-11 at HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor Hotel and Casino. The event will be a 20-game, single-elimination tournament played over the course of three days, featuring all 21 teams. “The atmosphere in the NBA 2K League Studio during games is electric,” said NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue.  “We are thrilled to bring the best NBA 2K players in the world and that studio experience to our fans in Las Vegas.”
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, NetherRealm Studios and Intersport announced the debut of Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetition 2019/2020, with the inaugural season of the series showcasing the upcoming installment of the Mortal Kombatfranchise. This year, the Mortal Kombat 11 Pro Kompetitionwill offer players a shot to compete in nine different live tournaments across North America, Latin America and Europe, as well as multiple online events, with a $155,000 prize pool up for grabs and the opportunity to qualify for one of 12 spots in Final Kombat. The first stop on North America’s Pro Kompetition will run May 24-26 at Combo Breaker 2019 in Chicago. The top 16 players from the various events will qualify for Final Kombat, the championship finale, and have the chance to take home an additional cut of a $100,000 USD prize pool. Final Kombat is scheduled for Q1 of 2020, again in Chicago.
Blizzard reports that tickets to the first-ever home market matches in Overwatch League history are officially sold out. A maximum capacity crowd of 4,500 fans is now slated to take part each day at the Dallas Fuel Homestand Weekend, with eight Overwatch League matches being played over two days at the Allen Event Center on April 27-28. Hosted by the Dallas Fuel franchise, the Dallas Fuel Homestand Weekend is the first of three Overwatch League homestands this season in local markets.
Blizzard also unveiled the locations for the Pacific and Atlantic Showdowns for Overwatch Contenders. The Pacific Showdown will be held from May 24–26 in Shanghai, China, while the Atlantic Showdown will be in Krefeld, Germany, from May 31-June 2. The top teams from all eight Overwatch Contenders regions will participate in these live events, which are scheduled during breaks in the Overwatch League to maximize scouting opportunities.
WSOE unveiled plans for WSOE 7, announcing that the organization would be getting into fighting games for the first time, with the inclusion of Bandai Namco’s Soul Calibur VI and Tekken 7. The event will take place this summer.

RFRSH Entertainmentannounced a new season format for its global Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament brand BLAST Pro Series. The 2019 season will consist of seven tournaments (retroactively including the Sao Paulo, Brazil, event from last month) along with a Global Final in December with a $500K USD prize pool, $350K of which will be awarded to the winning team. Each other tournament in the series will award a $250K prize pool, resulting in a $2M prize pool for the season.
Super League Gaming and ggCircuit, a esports center services company, announced a new partnership that will see Super League experiences be rolled out across ggCircuit’s esports center footprint. “Partnering with ggCircuit was a natural step in Super League’s mission to provide every gamer with regular opportunities to participate in events and leagues within a venue close to their home,” said Matt Edelman, chief commercial officer of Super League Gaming. “We are fortunate to have aligned with a company that shares our commitment to supporting the growth of local player communities through best-in-class solutions and experiences.”The first Super League program will be available to LAN gaming centers in June.
GameWorks announced plans to host “one of the largest national esports tournaments to date” surrounding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The GameWorks Showdown tournament will be held across all seven GameWorks venues nationwide with tournament sponsors that are set to include COUGAR, as the official Platinum Level Event Sponsor, along with Alienware, and Tabasco. Three local qualifier points rounds will be held weekly starting May 12 at each of its locations nationwide, and lead into the national competition at GameWorks Las Vegas – Town Square on June 29.

Perhaps the internet’s most popular, yet infamous voices, is Felix Kjellberg, better known to his millions of subscribers as, PewDiePie. Last weekend, PewDiePie partnered with the game streaming platform DLive to donate to up-and-coming content creators. Our insights focus on how his viewership impacted the platform. 
  •  Peak Audience Analysis: Pewdiepie hit a peak CCV of 78.9K during the live stream, representing 72% of the platforms total peak audience during his live stream. 
  •  AMA Analysis: During the live streaming, DLive’s AVG CCV was 13.4K, nearly half of that audience (47.2%) were watching from PewDiePie’s channel. 
  •  Is PewDiePie a more popular streamer than Ninja?: Last week, Ninja reached a peak CCV of 94.8k, placing his peak nearly 16k viewers ahead of PewDiePie.

Chipotle is rolling up spicy plans in the esports district, announcing a partnership with ESL and DreamHack to launch the Chipotle Challenger Series, described as “a unique onsite amateur esports competition that gives attendees at DreamHack Dallas and DreamHack Atlanta the opportunity to compete in the world’s most popular game titles for prizes.” In addition, the deal will see Chipotle serve as an official partner of DreamHack Masters Dallas as well as the presenting partner of DreamHack Open Atlanta with an additional presence at of ESL’s Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Chicago. Activations will also include player and VIP hospitality programs and digital content surrounding the events.
Marketing solutions company Franklin Group announced a multi-year partnership with the Florida Mayhem of the Overwatch League and Esports organization Misfits Gaming. With this partnership, Franklin Group expands into the esports industry as they continue their reach in sports and entertainment across North America.
100 Thieves has expanded its sponsorship deal with Totino’s to cover its Fortnite team. The sponsorship includes a living and training facility named the ‘Totino’s World Cup House’ and a 10-week content series, ‘Loot’.
High School Esports League announced a partnership with Tilly’s, Inc. in a move designed to offer students care packages and the chance to compete for premium prizes through an augmented reality experience and mobile game at Tillys stores. Tillys is also contributing $10,000 in scholarship money for HSEL’s competitive seasons.
World Rugby appointed Strive Sponsorship to evaluate relevant opportunities within the video gaming and esports industry. “We’re keen to better educate ourselves in the world of gaming and esports prior to making an assessment of what opportunities may exist in helping us achieve our objectives,” said Tom Hill, Chief Commercial Officer at World Rugby.


At TwitchCon Europe, company CEO Emmett Shear laid out the company’s plan to “grow their audience on Twitch, connect with them, and thrive with more ways to earn a living doing what they love.” In addition to rebuilding search capabilities and a new Recaps feature, the company noted that this season of Twitch Rivals will feature over 120 events with new genres, formats, interactive extensions, and millions of dollars in prize money.
FOX Sports locked in US television and streaming rights to the finals of multiple EA Sports FIFA19 Global Series events, anchored by the season-ending FIFA eWorld Cup 2019 where coverage continues this weekend with the first-ever FIFA eNations Cup from London. In addition, Caffeine, a social broadcasting platform for live gaming, esports and sports, has secured global streaming rights to all events. All rounds stream live on Caffeine’s dedicated EA Sports FIFA esports channel.Additionally, U.S. viewers on Caffeine are able to live-host their own streams of the tournament to watch with friends and fellow fans.
Caffeine continues to reel in content deals, this time announcing a media partnership with DreamHack that will see all DreamHack CS:GO and Dota 2 events streamed live in addition to the launch of a new DreamHack-dedicated show Overtime that will run on Caffeine throughout the year. The new series debuts live from the DreamHack Open Rio 2019 from April 19-21, and include coverage of CORSAIR DreamHack Masters in Dallas, Texas (June 2019) and Malmö, Sweden (October 2019); as well as and DreamHack Open events in Atlanta, Georgia (November 2019), Tours, France (May 2019), Summer and Winter (Jönköping, Sweden), Rotterdam, Netherlands (October 2019) and Sevilla, Spain (December 2019). The new “Overtime” show will include behind-the-scenes footage, guest interviews, live interaction with the streaming audience and never-before-seen footage. In total, DreamHack will broadcast 10 DreamHack pro tournaments of CS:GO and DOTA 2 live.
SPORT1 also inked a partnership with DreamHack that will see, this year, five premium events of CS:GO an Rocket League shown live on pay-TV channel eSPORTS1. The new collaboration includes platform-neutral and TV-exclusive media rights for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to DreamHack Masters in Dallas and Malmö (CS:GO), as well as DreamHack Pro Circuit Events in Dallas, Valencia, and Montreal (Rocket League).

Riot Games gave its logo an overhaul, updating a staple that rose from its founding 12 years ago, separating the first from the word “Riot.” In the announcement, the company noted that “It’s easy to forget what life was like in 2006… As technology changed and we began playing in new environments, it became clear that the logo we used for so long and had grown so fond of needed a rework.”
Trail Blazers star Meyers Leonard announced his investment into FaZe Clan, posting that “FaZe has taken the gaming world by storm, helping grow some of the largest gamers and content creators of our time. I make it a point not to invest in something unless I am incredibly passionate about it and I believe I can authentically impact the business. This investment into FaZe Clan not only represents a belief in the organization, but a belief in the long-term potential of #gamingand #esports. What better way to announce this investment than through the highest visibility platform that I have? My sneakers during a televised NBA game. This week’s Inside Xbox event saw Microsoft reveal the digital-only version of the system, officially titled the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition and set to hit stores on May 7. The console includes a 1TB hard drive, supporting 4K Ultra HD Video and HDR, but does not include the physical disc drive and cannot play physical games, which means it will cost $50 less than the standard Xbox One S and come preloaded with Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 3.
Meanwhile, Sony started revealing details of its next generation of PlayStation, with lead system architect Mark Cerny telling Wired that the company has boosted distribution of dev kits to studios so they can work towards it. One of the big advances in the hardware seems to indicate the introduction of a solid-state drive designed to work with the system to give faster results.
