Good morning! It’s Thursday and this is your early morning Esports and gaming brief.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s record-setting release makes this as good a time as any to talk about the intersection of entertainment and the video games industry. Film and TV adaptations of games were an often-panned, little-respected form of media in years past, with most seen as cash-grabs from companies looking for ways to get more out of their IP. Now, after several smash hits from Riot Games’ Arcane to The Last of Us and Mario’s blockbuster, there’s more evidence than ever that these products can work if they’re approached as standalone products with a focus on quality.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie drew $377 million at the global box office and $204.6 domestically, according to Comscore, making it the best animated film release since Frozen 2. The discrepancy between critic reviews and audience sentiment – Rotten Tomatoes shows 57% of critics gave the film their stamp of approval, while 96% of average fans lauded the film – also showcases the growing disconnect between what traditional media view as a hit and what a more digitally minded, gaming-savvy audience wants.

What does that mean for film critics, developers, publishers and studios? It’s time to reapproach strategies behind building around traditional IP and to have some frank conversations about how important it is to understand gaming culture in order to produce authentic products across the board.

COMPETITION AND GAMING NEWS

Karmine Corp took home the Rocket League Championship Series Winter Major title after a dominant run through the tournament and a 4-2 victory over FaZe Clan on Sunday at DreamHack San Diego. Karmine Corp won each of its matchups by that same scoreline, with wins over G2 Esports and Team Liquid to make it to the final. The French esports organization earned $100,000 of the event’s $310,000 prize pool and earned enough RLCS Championship points to qualify for the world championship later this year.

The League of Legends Championship Series Spring Finals brought $1.6 million to its host city of Raleigh, North Carolina, according to a report from The Esports Advocate. The event drew around 8,000 people to the city, according to estimates by the city’s tourism board, Visit Raleigh, during the April 8-9 tournament at PNC Arena. Despite the economic impact, however, the LCS struggled from a viewership perspective: The tournament drew just over 271,000 peak viewers, the lowest-ever PVs for an LCS final, according to Esports Charts. That’s more than 100,000 fewer viewers than Spring 2022 and nearly 100K less than Summer 2022 as well.

Electronic Arts officially announced EA SPORTS FC, the publisher’s next soccer sim game as its decades-long relationship with FIFA comes to an end. The game, set for release this July, has secured licensing with more than 19,000 players, 700 teams and 300 leagues, according to an announcement from EA, including the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, CONMEBOL and more. “We’re building on 30 years of leadership and history creating experiences that bring the global football community together,” said Nick Wlodyka, senior vice president and general manager for EA SPORTS FC, “and continuing to take it into a fan-first future.”

With E3 canceled, Nintendo is taking its own stab at a live event known as Nintendo Live 2023. The event will take place in September in Seattle, near Nintendo’s North American headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The event will feature gameplay, live performances, tournaments, photo opps “and other fun stuff,” according to Nintendo. The company said more details are coming soon.

The horror survival game released in early access on the 23rd of February 2023 and in a month since its release has generated over 39 million hours watched across Twitch, Youtube Gaming and Facebook Gaming.

133K unique channels have live streamed the game during that time period, and the game hit a peak viewership of 909K during the first two days. It also hit #2 by hours watched on the live streaming charts on its second day of release with 7.45M hours watched. It was behind only the Just Chatting Twitch category, making it the most-watched game in live streaming that day.

Esports organization Team Vitality is partnering with hardware provider CHERRY XTRFY in a two-year deal that sees CHERRY XTRFY become Vitality’s source for gaming peripherals. CHERRY XTRFY will also provide equipment for Vitality’s offices in France and Berlin as well as work with the team on co-branded products, according to a statement. CHERRY XTRFY has Vitality’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive jerseys as of April 11.

Talon Esports has launched a Pokémon UNITE team and will begin competition in Nintendo’s multiplayer online battle arena title later this week. The team will feature an all-Filipino roster and compete in the Pokémon UNITE Asia-Pacific East Regional Qualifiers on April 15-16 as it begins its journey to qualify for the game’s world championship. “Pokémon is an iconic IP that has a special place in the heart of millions around the world, so for us to see a new esports title emerge from this in the form of Pokémon UNITE is really exciting,” Talon CEO Sean Zhang said in a statement. “We believe it is a great opportunity for us to be involved in a relatively young esports scene with great growth potential at an early stage.”

Acer has become the exclusive hardware provider for ESL FACEIT Group competitions in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, the companies announced. Acer Predator, Acer’s gaming equipment subsidiary, will be part of EFG’s Intel Extreme Masters and ESL Challenger events along with all of EFG’s Dota 2 activations. The partnership is an expansion of a previous deal between the companies that brought Acer products to EFG competitions but did not provide exclusivity.

What would you say are some best practices for working with IP-focused creatives or variety content creators – things that people who work primarily with esports or full-time gaming streamers might not expect?

Spoont: No isn’t really a word that exists in this space. Ideas can be refined, concepts can be challenged and ideas can be evolved and tweaked to be targeted toward a desired outcome. It’s really important to maintain creative flexibility and not put unnecessary blockers in place just because something hasn’t been done before or is so wildly different from anything either the creator or the org has done before. There is no such thing as a bad idea, only an idea that hasn’t yet been molded to fit a goal.

Diablo making the right moves in lead up to launch

More than a month away from its launch, Diablo is tracking in the right direction in terms of Consideration scores. Among all American gamers, the share of those saying they would consider playing the franchise has risen from 12.1% to 15.4% over the past month. Among those with a PlayStation at home, scores have risen from 13.6 to 16.3, while gains among the Xbox folk have been more modest – from 10.6 to 11.5.

Esports organization XSET has acquired Queens Gaming Collective to further its diversity and inclusion efforts. XSET, which has expanded beyond esports into lifestyle and creator economy initiatives since its launch in 2020, will provide additional resources to the 15 creators that are part of QGC. XSET chief culture officer Erin Ashley Simon’s fingerprints are all over this move, and her ongoing work to promote women in gaming has made an impact on XSET and, now, marked significant change for outside creators as well.

Former Cloud9 VALORANT pro Jaccob “yay” Whiteaker has signed with Disguised, the VALORANT Challengers team owned by content creator Jeremy “Disguised Toast” Wang. Yah, who was part of the Tier 1 esports scene for VALORANT since the game’s inception, became a free agent prior to his release from Cloud9 in March. However, he went unsigned by top organizations, leaving an opportunity for Disguised to pick him up and turn around a tough first split. The team most recently went winless in the VALORANT Challengers North America Mid-Season Face Off and was 2-3 in group play during Split 1.

Veteran League of Legends star Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg is retiring after a decade-long career that saw the mid laner become one of the best players in the world. Bjergsen, a Denmark native who spent the majority of his pro career in North America, is synonymous with the rise of TSM as a League of Legends powerhouse and helped build one of the region’s most popular and internationally recognized teams. The 27-year-old, who following a yearlong stint as head coach of TSM from 2020-2021 left retirement to play for Team Liquid and then 100 Thieves this season, was a three-time LCS MVP, six-time LCS regular season champion and six-time regional playoff champion.

NFL star Tyreek Hill might be gearing up to get into esports when his pro football career ends. Hill, a wideout for the Miami Dolphins, told Kansas City, Missouri, radio station Sports Radio 810 that he plans to launch a content creation and gaming team “by the end of this month,” according to a report from Fast Company. Hill played for Kansas City from 2016-20 and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl 2019 title and 2020 appearance. He’s said he plans to retire when his current NFL contract ends in 2025.

Head of Creative for Halo Infinite Joseph Staten is leaving Microsoft after nearly 10 years working with the company on the Halo franchise, the company announced. Staten, who previously worked for Bungie on the first three editions of the series, joined Microsoft and returned to working on Halo for its most recent edition, Halo Infinite. He was not working directly on Halo at the time of his departure from Microsoft, according to IGN.

More than 3.7 billion people around the world now consume games media, according to a report from DFC Intelligence. The market research firm shared its Global Game Consumer Market Overview this week, obtained by GamesIndustry.biz, with insights into segments of gamers as well as the separation between game consumers and the core audience of gaming, which constitutes about 10% of that 3.7 billion number, according to DFC. Mobile is the leading platform globally, according to the research, with console players mostly based in North America and Europe. This provides an area of opportunity for games companies to transition mobile game consumers into investing in consoles or PCs. This has proven to be a struggle, particularly in Southeast Asia and with the rise of higher-caliber mobile technology that can more closely imitate the PC and console experiences.

A consumer group looking to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard has re-filed its California lawsuit, according to a report from Reuters. A previous version of the complaint filed in March was dismissed because of a “lack of allegations,” was amended and submitted April 11. The lawsuit was organized by private citizens, a stark contrast to the other legal bids attempting to counteract the $69 billion acquisition.

Counter Logic Gaming has officially shuttered in a merger with NRG Esports, bringing an end to one of the longest-tenured North American esports organizations. CLG owner Madison Square Garden Sports said in a statement it owns a noncontrolling equity interest in the combined company, which will be led by NRG founder and CEO Andy Miller. NRG will continue to operate CLG’s League of Legends team alongside other pieces of its esports program under the NRG banner, though CLG shed some of its workforce in the process of transitioning to its new position. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
