IN THE NEWS

Lionsgate has submitted a draft registration of its proposed spinoff of its studio business from Starz to the SEC. The spinoff, expected to be completed in 3Q23, is aimed at unlocking value for the stock in a difficult media environment.

A Delaware Superior Court judge turned down both Fox News’ and Dominion Voting Systems’ requests to rule on Dominions $1.6 billion defamation case against Fox News before a trial, saying neither side had made a convincing argument on whether Fox News acted with malice. But he did rule that none of the allegations made by Fox News about rigged voting machines in the 2020 elections were legit. Judge Eric M. Davis wrote (italics and all), “The evidence developed in this civil proceeding demonstrates that [it] is CRYSTAL clear that none of the statements relating to Dominion about the 2020 election are true.” So barring a last-minute settlement, a jury will decide whether Fox acted with malice in airing the claims, and determine damages, if any. Responded a Fox News spokesperson, “This case is and always has been about the First Amendment protections of the media’s absolute right to cover the news. Fox will continue to fiercely advocate for the rights of free speech and a free press as we move into the next phase of these proceedings.”

Senators are giving another shot to passing a bill that would allow news publishers and broadcasters to jointly negotiate with large online platforms. “Local news is facing an existential crisis, from ad revenues plummeting and newsrooms across the country closing to artificial intelligence tools taking content,” said Amy Klobuchar. “To preserve strong, independent journalism, news organizations must be able to negotiate on a level playing field with the online platforms that dominate news distribution and digital advertising.” The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act would grant an antitrust exemption to news organizations with fewer than 1,500 employees, enabling those groups to hold talks with online platforms that have at least 50 million U.S.-based users. Versions of the bill have been introduced in the past, but not made it to a full Senate vote.

“Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner and co-creator Taylor were among no-shows at PaleyFest in LA on Saturday, despite being announced as participants in a panel in the Paramount Network hit. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Costner – as has been rumored – is exiting the western drama. Asked about the status of talks with Costner, MTV Studios President of Scripted Keith Cox assured the crowd, “We are very confident he will continue with the show.”

Hollywood’s Covid testing protocols are set to expire May 12, but testing will continue to be available on request for actors involved in intimate scenes and scenes involving “extreme physical exertion.” The extension, agreed upon by SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP, will last at least until July 31.
