Patty Duke, who won a best supporting actress Oscar as a teenager for her portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and played “identical” cousins in her own television sitcom The Patty Duke Show from 1963-66, died yesterday due to sepsis from a ruptured intestine. She was 69. Duke’s acting career dates back to the late ‘50s, and she became known later in life for her advocacy work regarding mental health issues after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982.

MSNBC has events with four of the five presidential candidates still standing tonight, March 30. GOP hopefuls Donald Trump and John Kasich and Dems Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders get airtime, starting at 7p with Chuck Todd and Ohio governor Kasich in Queens, NY.

Vice Media acquired a majority stake in UK production company Pulse Films (Shut Up and Play the Hits). Labeling the move a “natural step in a relationship that has been enormously productive for both companies,” Andrew Creighton, Vice Media co-president, called Pulse “one of the few companies in the world that consistently produces content we admire.” 

Offering budding writers the chance to win the opportunity to see their project come to life, TV One announces its second annual sponsorship of the American Black Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition. Last year’s winning screenplay Deadbeat Dad Rehab, written by Kiki McKnight, will debut as a TV One original movie in July. The 2016 competition will highlight three new writers who will vie for a $5,000 cash prize and a chance to have their screenplay produced as a made-for-TV movie.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

NBC is looking to create a Blacklist spinoff that would star Famke Janssen (X-Men). The network will use the Blacklist ep that airs May 12 as the pilot for the potential new series; that episode will be directed by Michael Dinner (Justified).

The Royals creator Mark Schwahn signed with Lionsgate and Universal Cable Productions to continue as exec producer, writer and director for the show. E! recently ordered a third season of the soapy drama, its first original scripted series.

Skydance, the company launched in 2010 by David Ellison, raised $700 million in new financing for television, gaming and film production – $200 million in equity from a group of investors, and a $500 million line of credit from J.P. Morgan Chase. Skydance has partnered on some of Ellison’s former employer Paramount’s hit franchises including the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises, World War Z and Terminator Genisys.

COMING UP

Joan Rivers: Exit Laughing will premiere Friday, April 1 at 10p on THIRTEEN. The Comedy Hall of Fame pays tribute to the late comedian in this new documentary, which explores Rivers’ impact through the insights of three generations of comedians who have Rivers’ influence in common, including Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin, Dick Cavett, Don Rickles, Lily Tomlin and Marlo Thomas.

CBC series Dragons’ Den will wrap its 10th season with an all-star cast event on Wednesday, April 6, hosted by original Dragon Jim Treliving. The special hourlong ep will look back at some of the program’s most memorable moments.
 
Shark Week returns to make a splash on Discovery Channel Sunday, June 26 at 8p through Sunday, July 3 with new jaw-dropping shark stories and shark technology. Highlights include a SharkCam following giant great whites into the ocean, and shark face-offs with dolphins, seals, crocodiles and even humans as one science team finds themselves surrounded by a gang of large tiger sharks.

Actor Tom Hiddleston and Academy of Country Music nominees Maddie & Tae join the presenter list for the 51st ACM Music Awards, airing live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Sunday, April 3 at 8p on CBS. Additionally, ACM new female vocalist of the year winner Kelsea Ballerini will be joined by pop star Nick Jonas for a performance, New Orleans’ Trombone Shorty will duet with a surprise act, and Miranda Lambert will perform with Billy Gibbons and Keith Urban.

NEW SERIES

Secrets to entrepreneurial success are explored in CNBC’s Follow the Leader, launching Wednesday, April 6 at 10p. Business journalist Farnoosh Torabi digs into the methods used to build fortunes, starting with billionaire John Paul DeJoria, of John Paul Mitchell Systems and The Patron Spirits Company.

RETURNING SHOWS

After designing more than 200 aquariums in five seasons, Wayde King and Brett Raymer begin the sixth season celebrating their 100th episode of Animal Planet’s Tanked on Friday, April 15 at 10p. In the 100th episode, the duo is challenged by WWE’s Titus O’Neil to create a gator-themed tank that pays homage to his alma mater, University of Florida. Other notables appearing in season 6 include Texas Rangers’ first baseman Prince Fielder, singer Nick Carter, Latin pop artist Prince Royal and rapper 2-Chainz.

Get ready for a new town, new roommates, new school and new spirits when Freeform debuts the season two premiere of Monica the Medium, Monday, April 25 at 10p.

Spike’s getting more ink. The eighth edition of tattoo competition series Ink Master won’t debut until August, but Spike has already struck a deal for Season 9. The 2017 iteration Ink Master will consist of 15 episodes with a live finale. “The Ink Master franchise has been a major driver in Spike’s successful shift to general entertainment,” said Sharon Levy, EVP original series.

Comedy Central announced renewals and extensions for eight current series: Tosh.0 will return for a ninth season, Not Safe with Nikki Glaser is extended for an additional 10 first season eps, Drunk History will return for a fourth season, Review will be back for a third and final season, and This Is Not Happening is getting a third season. Additionally, digital series Alternatino, Nothing Is Easy and Questionable Science will return.

TNT is getting ready for summer. The network will bow the seventh and final season of Rizzoli & Isles on Monday, June 6, followed by the fifth season premiere of Major Crimes on Monday, June 13.

Bounce TV will premiere the second season of its comedy series Mann & Wife on Tuesday, April 5 at 9p. The network is offering the HD series premiere ep to network affiliates for airing on their primary channel from April 8-18.

AT THE UPFRONTS

Scripps Networks Interactive had plenty to boast about at its Upfront event Tuesday morning at Alice Tully Hall, a precursor to the celeb-filled event for advertisers held later in the day. President, national ad sales and marketing Jon Steinlauf started things off, noting the ratings rises at Scripps nets are rare in the cable world right now. The secret? “Personal is the new premium,” said chief programming, content & brand officer Kathleen Finch. “Our goal now is to make content that matters and turn talent into household names.”

HGTV, on pace to deliver its best first quarter ever, has a programming lineup of 17 premiere series, fresh episodes of 24 shows and 14 one-hour specials. New real estate titles include recently launched Listed Sisters, along with Good Bones, Home Town, Masters of Flip and Vintage Flip. Mountain Life is a new entry in the destination programming category. “HGTV is thriving because we have an established cadre of compelling star experts, as well as an influx of new talent who resonate with our audience,” said Allison Page, GM, HGTV, DIY and Great American Country. “Our content and scheduling is solid, we have a powerful development pipeline, and we’ve grown our audiences across the board – particularly upscale audiences – for several years.”

DIY, up 8 percent among A25-54 versus year-ago, has ordered 360 hours of new home improvement programming, including eight new shows, Holmes Buys Homes, Stone House Revival, Building Off the Grid: Big Sky Ranch, Louisiana Flip N Move, Alaska Flip N Move, and Maine Cabin Masters among them.

Travel Channel is taking a turn to the fun side. “Look for more Travel Channel shows like Expedition Unknown and Bizarre Foods that provide much-needed escape from the daily grind,” said Courtney White, SVP, programming. “We’ll travel to plenty of far-flung and fascinating places, eat mouthwatering foods and have lots of laughs along the way.” With five consecutive months of ratings gains, the net has commissioned 400 original programming hours, and has over 35 new series (like Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food and Dartboard Road Trip) and pilots in the pipeline. Travel is event-izing summer with offerings like 7 Water Wonders, Top Secret Swimming Holes, Xtreme Waterparks and Life’s a Beach.

On the menu at Food Network and Cooking Channel are 30 new series and 40 returning shows. “Continuing to fuel our pipeline with series that entice co-viewing and entertain audiences of all ages is a top priority for 2016,” said SVP, programming and development Didi O’Hearn. New to Food will be Cooks vs. Cons, Cake Masters, Guy’s Grocery Games Redemption Tournament, 12 Hungry Yelpers and Kids BBQ Championship, among others, while Extra Virgin: Americana, Million Dollar Critic, Cheap Eats and Patti LaBelle’s Place are among the selections on Cooking’s programming plate.

Great American Country grew ratings by over 30 percent in 1Q16 among prime viewers P25-54, and they did it by taking it outside. “We will keep building on our success by focusing on families who love the experience of outdoor living,” said Page. The network released a slate of returning series: Season 2 of Going RV will premiere Wednesday, May 4, at 9p, while, the second season of Lake Guys debuts Thursday, May 5 at 8p. Additionally, season 7 of Flea Market Flip is set for Sunday, July 3, at 9p and season 2 of Mega Decks will premiere in July.

CASTING NEWS

Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Arrow) has been cast as the female lead in USA drama series Shooter, opposite Ryan Phillippe. She replaces Emily Rios, who played the part in the pilot for the series, based on Stephen Hunter’s novel Point Of Impact and the 2007 Paramount film.

Brendan Hines (Lie to Me) landed a co-starring role in Amazon pilot The Tick, based on the comic book character.

Tyler Hilton (Extant) landed a series regular role in ABC comedy pilot The Fluffy Shop, co-written and starring Gabriel Iglesias. Hilton replaces Paul Walter Hauser.

Addison Timlin (Californication) landed the female lead in CBS drama pilot MacGyver. Lucas Till plays the unorthodox problem-solver.

Samuel Barnett (Jupiter Ascending) scored the lead role opposite Elijah Wood in Dirk Gently for BBC America. The comedic thriller is based on the Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency novels by Douglas Adams, who also penned Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Raydar Media is packing heavy for MIPTV with a factual lineup including Reggie Yates: Extreme UK, Bestsellers, Project Children, Stetsons & Stilettos and Sport of Kings.

Endemol Shine Group landed a commission for season two of Intersection, from FOX Turkey. The drama premiered in January with a peak audience of 3.2 million viewers.

A diverse MIPTV slate from Keshet International includes BBC One drama The A Word; a new, cross-media game, Touch, allowing viewers to play along; Battle of the Chefs, and VH1 show Walk of Shame Shuttle, among others.

Factory Media’s pre-MIPTV deals include the sale of action sports series The Indestructibles to BBC Brit for its feeds in Africa, the Nordic territories and Poland, to BBC Entertainment for Latin America, and to Discovery DMAX in Italy, TVNZ in New Zealand and Network Ten in Australia.

DCD Rights licensed celebrity interview show Off Camera with Sam Jones to Portugal’s SIC, Foxtel in Australia and Sky New Zealand.

Legendary Television struck a deal with Sky 1 for the UK television rights to Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan Condal (Hercules) drama Colony. Series premiered in the U.S. in January and recently earned a second season order from USA.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Workplace comedy The Jamz, from NYTVF Productions and The Orchard, will be available on iTunes starting Tuesday, April 12, and additional digital platforms beginning April 30. The series, based on a 2014 New York Television Festival selection, is the first series from the recently launched NYTV Prod. division.

Telemundo and AT&T are teaming up to bring an interactive dimension to the new season of Telemundo series El Senor de los Cielos through the net’s new Double Accion app. AT&T is the exclusive sponsors of the app, and throughout the upcoming season the two companies will provide the opportunity for fans to directly engage with the show, and participate in social conversation through live viewer participation within the live broadcast.

TLC video hub TLCme.com has created video offerings with four lifestyle vloggers and influencers. Estee on TLCme stars YouTube’s Estee Lalonde; Erica in the House features DIYer Erica Domesek; #NewMomDiaries is led by celebrity stylist Jess Zaino, and TLCmeNow is hosted by radio host Dannie Starr. “We are making great forays into original video content on the topics that are ever-important to our key millennial audience,” said Scott Lewes, SVP of programming and multi-platform strategy.

RATINGS

CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Monday rose 30 percent in total viewers (921,000) week to week and gained 50 percent in both A18-34 (.3/1) and A18-49 (.3/1). The net’s Jane the Virgin grew 20 percent (928,000) from last week, and grew 33 percent week to week in A18-34 (.4/2) and A18-49 (.4/1).

The only syndicated talk shows to rise the week ending March 20 were Steve Harvey, up 6 percent week to week to 1.8, and Maury and Wendy Williams, both up 7 percent to 1.6. Family Feud regained the game show crown (down 3 percent to 6.4), thanks to a 14 percent drop for Wheel of Fortune (6.0).

FOX Business Network reached new highs in 1Q16 across all key day parts in both total viewers and the 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen. In business day (9-30am-5pm), FBN narrowed the gap with rival CNBC to its smallest ever, pulling within 36 percent for the quarter. 

CBS Supergirl soared Monday night with its biggest A18-49 rating in seven weeks and its largest audience in five weeks with its The Flash crossover episode, according to Nielsen. The ep topped all Monday scripted programming for A18-49.

IN MEMORIAM

Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation died Easter Sunday, March 27, at age 92. Mother Angelica, who founded the Eternal World Television Network in 1981, starred on its Mother Angelica Live.

Former CBS News reporter Eric Engberg died in his sleep March 27. He was 74. Engberg was honored for identifying a Vietnam veteran buried in the Tomb of the Unknowns.
