IN THE NEWS

Premium cable net Starz will undergo what it calls a “landmark transformation” on April 5. A single brand approach will align Starz and Starz Encore networks with a unified look and feel (tagline: Starz: Obsessable), with the new service representing up to 14 linear channels. “Harnessing the power and resonance of the Starz flagship brand and bringing the expansive movie and television series offerings under one brand is good for the consumer and the distributor alike,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, president of global marketing and product planning.

Former Meet the Press host David Gregory has landed at CNN, where he’ll serve as a political analyst based in D.C. Gregory, who will appear primarily on New Day, has offered commentary on CNN and Fox News since he was bumped from NBC.

Media General notified Dish subscribers that viewers in 48 markets could lose access to its stations if a new carriage agreement isn’t reached by Thursday. “We are still in negotiations and do not understand why Media General has chosen to involve our customers at this time,” posted Dish. “There is still time to reach a mutually beneficial deal.” Media General said it has given six weeks of contract extensions without reaching a deal.

Cable nets lost about 2.5 percent of their subscribers, according to Nielsen’s April estimates, compared to a year-to-date loss of 2 percent. Pivotal Research Group’s Brian Wieser attributed the trend mainly to cord shaving, with households reducing, rather than eliminating, cable packages.

Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios and The National Association of African American-Owned Media filed a petition with the FCC on Thursday demanding an investigation into Comcast’s compliance in adding African American-owned cable television networks, as outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding stemming from the Comcast/NBCUniversal merger in January, 2011.The petition claims Comcast has failed to comply with the conditions, and the FCC has neglected to enforce them.

Al Jazeera Media Network is cutting about 500 jobs, mostly in Qatar, in a move it characterizes as “an optimization initiative in connection with the ongoing transformation of the media landscape.” As previously announced, the company’s low-rated English language channel in the U.S., Al Jazeera America, goes black on April 12 after less than three years.

CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley will receive the 2016 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. The day of the ceremony, Monday, November 21, Pelley will broadcast the evening news live from the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. “Walter became known as ‘Uncle Walter’ to an admiring audience, but he was truly like an uncle to me. In our conversations, he pressed me to be honest with the audience, skeptical of conventional wisdom and grateful for my family. His advice and his example are more urgent today than at any time,” said Pelley. “I’m greatly humbled by this recognition from the Cronkite School because it comes in the name of a man I knew, admired and loved.”

The TV Land Icon Awards will honor legendary TV creator Norman Lear and “pop culture icon” John Stamos in a ceremony taking place April 10 and airing Sunday, April 17 at 9p. The Beach Boys, with whom Stamos has frequently played in the past, will perform a medley of their hit songs as part of the Grandfathered star’s tribute.

Viceland’s strategy is to reduce ad load and run more native ads. As for a report in International Business Times that Viceland’s ratings are 77 percent lower than those of H2, which it replaced, a spokesperson called the number “inaccurate.”
