Former Obama White House press secretary Josh Earnest is officially in as a political analyst for NBC News, appearing on NBC and MSNBC. He made his debut yesterday on both Morning Joe and Today.

In a new acquisition, ION Television is the exclusive U.S. television home for current and future seasons of Entertainment One drama series Private Eyes, starring Jason Priestley. Private Eyes follows an ex-pro hockey player who irrevocably changes his life when he decides to team up with a fierce P.I. to form an unlikely investigative powerhouse.

Tomi Lahren suspension from Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze has turned into a termination from the right-wing network. Lahren was given a weeklong suspension after she voiced pro-choice comments on The View, and now TheBlaze has “banned permanently” Lahren, according to a report in The New York Post.

In today’s ever-evolving social media landscape, networks and marketers have to be strategic about where to invest their dollars. "Resources are limited," notes Octagon‘s digital strategy group director Meredith Kinsman. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Science Channel wooed Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) to appear in and exec produce SciJinks (working title), scheduled to premiere in Q4 2017. Half-hour series will use cutting-edge science as the foundation for outrageous stunts and practical jokes, carried out by a Galecki-orchestrated team of inventive scientists drawing from chemistry, physics, technology, engineering and more. Galecki’s Alcide Bava Productions and A. Smith & Co. Productions will produce.

Show me the money: Cash Cab will return to Discovery in 2017, with a new spin, as unsuspecting passengers will be ambushed by celebrities. Comedian David Steinberg (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Inside Comedy, Seinfeld) is onboard the project and with All3Media’s Lion USA will revamp the series as exec producers, with Robyn Todd as co-executive producer.

AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos renewed sci-fi drama Humans for a third season. Production will begin in Fall 2017 for a 2018 return.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network ordered two new docu-series that will join its Saturday night programming lineup later this year. Released, produced by Lucky 8 TV, features intimate narratives of formerly incarcerated men and women as they walk out of the prison doors for the first time to restart their lives. Checking Inn (working title), from Trooper Entertainment in association with Lionsgate Television, follows former Essence Magazine editor-in-chief Monique Greenwood as she pursues her lifelong dream of running her own bed and breakfast.

Animal Planet greenlit Rescue Dog To Super Dog, an unscripted series in which shelter dogs are given a second chance to become a companion to someone in need. From Grant Mansfield’s Plimsoll Productions, the show is slated for premiere in Q3 2017.

BBC America announced natural history landmark series Blue Planet II will be scored by Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Music. The new seven-part series comes from BBC Studios Natural History Unit and follows last Saturday’s finale of Planet Earth II on BBCA.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

A+E Networks-owned net FYI has more than 100 hours of unscripted programming, including nine new series and five returning series on tap for 2017. Content focuses on three lifestyle genres: food, relationships and home. The net has seen triple-digit growth across all platforms since January 2015, according to the network, driven by shortform series including Married Life and Upgrade My Bae, and Tiny House Nation, which continues its fourth season. New series include You Can’t Turn That Into a House; Stove Tots, following young maestros of the kitchen; A Question of Love, about couples who take the plunge and move in together; and Prefabulous, which celebrates homes. Other returning series include Food Porn, back for season 2; Zombie House Flipping, (season 2); and My Floating Home (season 2) and Tiny House Hunting (season 4).

David Mann, Tamela Mann and company bring a new assortment of funny family situations and laughs in the third season of their Bounce comedy series Mann & Wife, premiering with back-to-back eps tonight (March 28) at 9p.

A new season of HGTV series Property Brothers: Buying and Selling, starring bros Drew and Jonathan Scott, premieres Wednesday, April 19, at 9p. Each episode follows contractor Jonathan and real estate expert Drew as they combine their skills to help families tackle two critical real estate activities selling one home and buying another.

Ayesha Curry, cookbook author, social media maven, mother and wife to NBA superstar Stephen Curry, returns to Food Network with a new season of Ayesha’s Home Kitchen, premiering Sunday, April 30 at 12:30p.

Kids BBQ Championship returns to Food Network for season 2 on Monday, May 1 at 8p with an updated format, more kid grill masters and new co-host Damaris Phillips joining returning co-host Eddie Jackson.

COMING UP

AXS TV flies into the “Danger Zone” with its concert special honoring Kenny Loggins and Friends, premiering Sunday, April 9, at 10p. Highlights include Loggins’ reunion with Jim Messina, Michael McDonald and David Foster.

LMN’s premieres original movie The Psycho She Met Online on Sunday, April 9 at 8p. Chelsea Hobbs (UnREAL), Matthew Lawrence (Boy Meets World) and Charity Shea (Single Ladies) star in the flick about a couple who rent out spare rooms – then wish they hadn’t.

Two-hour encore episodes of Latin Music USA return to PBS stations on two consecutive Fridays, April 28 and May 5 at 9p.

CASTING

Anna Akana (Miss 2059) snagged a recurring role in the third season of Freeform’s drama series Stitchers. Her character first appears in the June 12 episode.

Katie Cassidy, who exited CW series Arrow after meeting a tragic fate in season 4 as Laurel Lance, will return to the series as Laurel’s doppelganger, Black Siren.

Andrea Riseborough, Rory Culkin, Paul Sparks and Shea Whigham have joined the cast of Waco, a six-part event series produced by Weinstein Television and slated to air on Paramount Network in 2018.

The Academy of Country Music and dick clark productions announced the hosts of ACM Red Carpet Live, the red carpet pre-how for the 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards. Indie production company Pernel Media is producing a new docu series charting the history of Europe for France 5, the French public television network. Produced in both French and international versions, The Real War of Thrones; A History of Europe recounts the epic story of the rival dynasties that forged the history of modern Europe. Series is co-written by Chris Holt (The Six Queens of Henry VIII) and Vanessa Pontet (Secrets d’Histoire); Pontet will also direct.

GOING GLOBAL

Access Entertainment took a 24.9 percent stake in Bad Wolf, the Welsh production company behind the upcoming BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.

Canadian television production and distribution company Portfolio Entertainment is shopping two new culinary series at MIPTV: Cafe Maria and Sailing Chef.
 
Following its theatrical release, the film Kiss & Cry will make its broadcast debut on Canada’s Family Channel on Friday, April 7 at 8p. The romantic drama stars Degrassi: The Next Generation alumni Sarah Fisher and Luke Bilyk.

Singapore-based distribution company Bomanbridge Media acquired the series The Fashion Hero from production company Beauty World Search.

Rupaul’s Drag Race saw its most watched episode ever for the series’ season 9 premiere and debut on VH1. Nearly 1 million viewers tuned in for the season premiere, which tripled the time slot on VH1 while more than doubling last season’s Logo debut.
 
CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2017 NCAA Tournament is delivering strong audience growth through its first two weeks with fans engaging across television  up double-digits in viewership  record-setting streaming on NCAA March Madness Live and all-time records for interactions by fans across social platforms. To date coverage is averaging 9.8 million viewers through Sunday’s Regional Finals, up 10 percent from last year (8.9 million), making it the third most-watched tournament in 24 years. In addition, the NCAA Tournament is averaging a 6.0/13 rating/share, up +9% from 2016 (5.5/12).
 
ABC’s Designated Survivor soared to a 2.2 rating last Wednesday among A18-49 in Live + 3 to rank No. 1 at 10p by 2 tenths of a rating point over NBC’s Chicago P.D. (2.0), which initially won the hour by 1-tenth in L+SD.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

NBC is retooling its alternative department with the promotions of Jenny Groom, who will remain SVP, alternative programming and development but will now oversee the department; Lesley Cerwin, who most recently oversaw publicity for NBC’s unscripted operations, to SVP, current programming; and Shelby Shaftel to VP, alternative programming and development. Groom succeeds Meredith Ahr, who is launching Universal Television Alternative Studio.

NBCUniversal tapped Cynthia Ashworth to serve as SVP, Integrated Marketing and Network Partnerships, Hispanic. Most recently, Ashworth led Global Brand Marketing for San Francisco-based tech company DocuSign, and before that was SVP, Marketing at Univision Communications.

IM Global Television is ramping up its Unscripted & Alternative division, hiring Jennifer Colbert as VP of development, Tim Rosenman as director of development, and Casey Kelly as manager of development. Colbert previously served as an executive producer and showrunner for networks including A&E, Lifetime, VH-1 and MTV 2 as well as with studios. Rosenman worked as a development executive for Done and Done Productions and Lionsgate. Kelly worked as manager of development for The Gurin Company, where she was involved in the development of programs and pilots for nets including NBC, Oxygen, MSNBC and syndication.

Thinkfactory Media promoted Adam Freeman to executive VP of creative affairs. Since joining the company he’s exec-producing some of the company’s biggest hits, including the unscripted series Mama June: From Not to Hot for WE tv.

Mark Dee-Shapland joined AMC Studios in the newly created role of head of content sales. He held several positions at Off the Fence, most recently as VP of sales and co-production.

The Africa Channel hired Sheila Cole as VP, post production operations, and Brendan Gabriel as VP, production and creative director. Cole’s 20-year career in television encompasses work with NBC, Paisley Park, Comedy Central, Warner Bros. and BET. Gabriel most recently was head of creative for Endemol Shine Africa.

Veteran broadcast, cable and syndication exec Bruno Cohen announced his intention to retire later this year after 40 years in the television industry. Cohen has served as president and GM of the CBS Television Station group’s San Francisco Bay Area properties, KPIX-TV and KBCW-TV, as well as KSTW-TV, the CBS-owned affiliate of The CW in Seattle, since September 2012. He will continue in these roles until a successor has been named.
