03.27.15

Good morning. It’s Friday March 27, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN is adding a new twist ahead of the upfronts, announcing a proprietary data management platform that will reportedly launch within the next three weeks to allow sponsors and agencies to plan and buy its programming based on audiences rather than ratings, according to MediaPost. ESPN Vice President of Digital and Publishing Sales Zachary Chapman said the platform would be introduced in phases, with ESPN looking to offer a “level of transparency” with its DMP so its data can target consumers more effectively.

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports lined up coverage plans for the 2015 FIM MotoGP World Championship season, with coverage starting Sunday at 2p with the Grand Prix of Qatar on FOX Sports 2 and FOX Sports GO. Bob Varsha and Ralph Sheheen will serve as hosts for the international rounds, with the MotoGP broadcast team of Nick Harris, Matthew Birt and Dylan Gray calling the races. The first U.S. stop on the tour is set to take place on April 12 at 3p.

Univision Deportes announced that its coverage of six Liga MX matches last week continued to trend upward, with the UniMas broadcast of Guadalajara/Toluca on March 22 delivering 1.2 million Total Viewers 2+ and 686,000 Adults 18-49. Overall, Liga MX is averaging 308,000 Total Viewers 2+ and 185,000 Adults 18-49 per game on UDN this season, for markups of 20% and 18% among Total Viewers 2+ and Adults 18-49 vs. year ago numbers.

FOX Sports reports that Garbage Time with Katie Nolan saw viewership spikes in its second week. The company said that total viewership, both linear and digital, for episode 2 drew over 735,000 viewers, representing a 31% uptick from the show’s debut episode.

ESPN brings back Draft Academy on April 14 at 7p, with the series once again offering “a personal, behind-the-scenes look at top NFL Draft prospects.” The show will see a four-week run of original one-hour episodes and serve as part of ESPN’s weekly Tuesday night Journey to the Draft programming block.  Prospects under the spotlight will include Jameis Winston, Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Shane Ray, Devin Smith and John Crockett. In addition, the series will re-air across the ESPN networks and on ABC while SportsCenter, NFL Live and other ESPN shows will feature segments leading up to and after the 2015 NFL Draft.

NBCSN once again delivers coverage of World Series of Fighting on Saturday at 9p, anchored by undefeated Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje defending his world lightweight title against Luis “Baboon” Palomino. Todd Harris handles play-by-play and will be joined by analysts Bas Rutten and Joey Varner to call the action.

AXS TV announced plans to carry Indiana University’s famed LITTLE 500, the largest and oldest collegiate bike race in the U.S., for the 13th consecutive year on April 24 at 4p and 25 at 2p. “We are honored to continue our work with Indiana University and showcase this unique intramural event on AXS TV, I consider the LITTLE 500 to be sport in its purest form.” said Darrell Ewalt, AXS TV’s vice president and executive producer of event programming and production. “Through our state-of-the-art coverage of the LITTLE 500, we will capture all the drama of the event as these dedicated athletes compete on race day.”

NCAA President Mark Emmert got vocal about his concern over a new Indiana law that critics say could open the door for state businesses to discriminate against gay people. Of course, the organization is located in Indianapolis and the Final Four will take place there next week. "The NCAA national office and our members are deeply committed to providing an inclusive environment for all our events,” Emmert said in a statement. “We are especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees. We will work diligently to assure student-athletes competing in, and visitors attending, next week’s Men’s Final Four in Indianapolis are not impacted negatively by this bill. Moving forward, we intend to closely examine the implications of this bill and how it might affect future events as well as our workforce."

Audio technology provider Triton Digital will exclusively deliver and monetize streaming audio advertisements within the MLB.com Gameday Audio desktop product and the MLB.com At Bat mobile application starting this season. This deal with MLBAM will mark the first time targeted audio ads will be inserted into the Gameday Audio feeds.

"The key to selling against digital competition is knowing when to compete and when to complement. When clients say they’re spending their budget on paid search, rather than fight them, tell them: Then we are a perfect fit…we can help you improve your paid search in three ways,” says Digital Media Training CEO Steve Bookbinder. Hear what else Steve and other media experts have to say at the Cynopsis webinar, How to sell digital advertising in a fragmented media World,” on March 31st at 1:30PM est. Register here.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

The North American Soccer League deepened its relationship with ESPN ahead of the 2015 season. The league will see a minimum of 120 league matches carried live on ESPN3, ESPN Play, and ESPN Player in 75 different countries as part of the deal. Eight NASL clubs will deliver all 15 regular season home matches live on ESPN3 in the U.S., ESPN Play in Latin America, and ESPN Player in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “Working with ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in Sports, is going to be of great benefit to our fans, who will be able to watch the vast majority of our matches on ESPN3, ESPN Play, and ESPN Player this year,” NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson said. “We have quickly developed a great relationship with ESPN, and we’re glad to be a part of their live coverage.”

Yahoo Sports Radio is teaming up with Sportscasters Talent Agency of America in the launch of STAA University, designed to serve as “a unique and interactive online university to develop and discover the next generation of top sportscasting talent.” The interactive digital course will bring together students from across the nation for a “hands-on experience that includes an extensive 11-week online curriculum, broadcast tools, mentorship, and unparalleled networking and experiential opportunities, as they earn a specialization in sports broadcasting and build their demo and resume.”

THE MAIN EVENT

Michigan State/Oklahoma on TBS at 10p.
