03.25.15 Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 25, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The contenders are in place for the 36th Annual Sports Emmy Awards, with NATAS announcing this year’s nominees yesterday. Overall, more than 190 nominees were announced across 40 categories. The roster of nominees is led by ESPN, which garnered 57 nominations across its platforms, led by E:60 and SportsCenter with seven nods each, while the company’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup notched six. Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group reeled in 42 nominations, for the second-most among all media companies, including 15 for its coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games, the most of any single program this year. In addition to the Olympics, E:60, SportsCenter, and the World Cup, other programs to rank in the top ten include FOX Sports Live with 7; MLB on TBS Postseason and HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel with 5; while HBO’ Hard Knocks, Showtime’s Inside the NFL, ESPN’s NFL PrimeTime and NBC’s Super Bowl XLIX each drew 4. Other notables include MLB Network nabbing the channel’s most ever, with 16.
Sunday’s Manchester United win over Liverpool handed NBCSN with an average of 950,000 viewers to rank as the most-watched early morning Premier League match in US television history. NBC UNIVERSO averaged 146,000 viewers for the matchup as well, bringing combined English- and Spanish-language viewership for the match to nearly 1.2 million viewers. This season, the company’s Premier League viewership (with an average of 485,000 viewers) is up 10% versus the same point a year ago.
ESPN Deportes saw its coverage of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 score record-breaking ratings for the network as Barcelona’s win over Manchester City on March 18 ranked as the highest-rated, most-watched telecast on ESPN Deportes this year. The match delivered a 2.0 Hispanic HH rating and 451,000 Hispanic P2+ viewers. Overall, the eight matches telecasted during this round averaged a 0.9 Hispanic Household rating and 176,000 Hispanic P2+ viewers.
Continuing the trend, beIN SPORTS saw an average of 2.12 million total viewers across both English and Spanish language networks with its coverage of El Clasico, aka Real Madrid/FC Barcelona, according to Nielsen. The match delivered an average of 1.353 million total viewers on beIN SPORTS en Espanol and 767,000 total viewers on beIN SPORTS English for a markup of 16% over the previous broadcast of El Clasico for beIN SPORTS English, and 64% increase in viewership for beIN SPORTS en Espanol.
FOX Sports 1 revs up for its debut telecast of a NASCAR Sprint Cup race this weekend, with 26 hours of programming on deck. While the race will air live on Sunday at 1p, the channel will also offer content that includes the one-hour NASCAR Productions special titled NASCAR’s Masters of the Clock: The Legend of Martinsville on Sunday, a sit-down interview with legend Richard Petty on today’s edition of NASCAR Race Hub, as well as expanded NASCAR coverage on FOX Sports 1 daily shows America’s Pregame and FOX Sports Live.
Esquire Network is getting into the sports business biz, announcing a reality show dubbed The Agent that will follow “four top real-life ‘Jerry Maguire’ sports agents navigating the cutthroat world of professional football.” The 10-part series launches in July and will include Jeff Guerriero, Peter Schaffer, Sunny Shah and Ed Wasielewski.
Universal Sports Network and NBC Sports serve up 15 hours of coverage of the 2015 ISU World Figure Skating Championships starting today. Same day event coverage launches at 1p with the Ice Dance and Pairs short programs. Coverage on NBC begins Saturday at 8p with continuing coverage on Sunday at 3p.
PGA TOUR professional Pat Perez and former comedian and caddy turned commentator Michael Collins are joining team SiriusXM with a new show on its PGA TOUR channel. The series, Out of Bounds, debuted yesterday at noon as a monthly program.

Ahead of Super Bowl 50, the NFL unveiled plans for a year-long celebration of the event to commemorate its anniversary. The 2015 season will feature a gold thematic signifying the 50th “golden” Super Bowl that will be visible on the field and throughout the season with the 50-yard line numerals and NFL shield logo at every stadium in the color. In addition, team logos on sideline apparel will have accents of gold and logos for NFL events, including Draft, Kickoff and the Playoffs, will also don the color. In addition, many teams will host Super Bowl Homecomings, inviting their Super Bowl teams to be honored in-stadium on gameday and throughout the weekend.
WWE signed on as a Promotional Partner for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, set to run in LA from July 25 August 2. The alliance will see WWE utilize all its platforms including WWE Network, TV and pay-per-view broadcasts, live events, and digital and social media to generate awareness and support of LA2015. WWE Superstars and Divas will also participate in various events in conjunction with the promotion of LA2015 and WWE will develop and produce public service announcements (PSAs) promoting the organization.
NASCAR fans rank as the most loyal to a sponsor’s brand, according to SponsorLink research released today by Repucom. The study said seven out of 10 NASCAR fans said they are loyal to a sponsor’s brand when the brand supports their sport, marking a 20% spike over a typical sports fan. In total, sponsors in NASCAR’s top three national series earned nearly $1.3 billion in television exposure value in 2014.

Dew Tour launched “Dew Tour Push,” a g video partnership with skate industry leader The Berrics designed to offer “a unique and in-depth look at the sport and eight of its athletes.” Skaters Luan Oliveira, Ben Raybourn, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Ishod Wair, Leticia Bufoni, Josh Matthews, Cody Cepeda and Trevor Colden will all take part, with each producing their own videos. Golf Channel announced that GolfNow, the online tee time booking and golf course technology and services platform, is partnering with Yelp to boost exposure of existing GolfNow tee time distribution platforms by making them available throughout Yelp’s digital and online community. “By expanding Yelp Platform to new categories and partners, we’re delivering on our goal to make it as easy as possible for consumers to both find and book experiences and services directly through Yelp,” said Mike Ghaffary, VP Business and Corporate Development at Yelp. "Partnering with GolfNow is a win for all of the golfers who are coming to Yelp every month to find the best local golf courses.”
The Penn Relays are launching a new messaging app to aid communications during the 121-year-old track and field competition, slated for April 23-25 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field. Penn Relays will partner with Penn tech startup, WeHUB Messenger, a new and free communication app for the event and its sponsors to communicate official messages during the event. At Penn Relays, people using WeHUB will be able to keep pace with up-to-the-minute results, find news about the daily schedule, get recaps of key events, promote teams or groups, and connect instantaneously with others at the Relays.
GlideSlope hired Tori Stevens and Rod Davis as the newest members of the New York-based management advisory group. Stevens will serve as Chief Strategist where she will be charged with overseeing all strategy development and execution for the firm’s clients.
