03/24/17: MLB Network is feeling the glow; ESPN’s new NFL All-Stars; DIRECTV ups the 4K count

Good morning. It’s Friday March 24, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Team USA’s win over Puerto Rico at the 2017 World Baseball Classic championship game wrapped up a record run for MLB Network, as the channel drew 2.3 million viewers for the game on Wednesday night, marking MLB Network’s second-most watched telecast ever, and continuing a streak of non-postseason bests. The telecast beat MLB Network’s prior record for a World Baseball Classic game telecast by 58% (1.4 million viewers set during Tuesday’s semifinal game between Team USA/Team Japan). Overall viewership for the 2017 tournament grew 32% over the 2013 WBC tournament and delivered MLB Network’s most-watched week ever. In addition, Wednesday now ranks as MLB Network’s second-best viewership for both prime time (1,595,000 persons) and total day (475,000).

Meanwhile, MLB.TV subscribers in the US consumed a record 70 million minutes of live World Baseball Classic games on all supported streaming platforms, including the MLB.com At Bat app, throughout the 2017 tournament, with video views across all MLB.com owned and operated platforms swelling 59% over the 2013 tournament, with more than 3 million video accesses by fans.

ON THE AIR

ESPN locked in its new NFL studio show lineups. With Chris Berman shifting to a new role later this year, the company announced that Suzy Kolber, Samantha Ponder and Trey Wingo will shift into Berman’s host responsibilities moving forward. Kolber, who co-hosted Monday Night Countdown with Berman since 2015, will now host the entire Monday Night Football pregame show from the site of each week’s game and add the MNF halftime and postgame host role to her responsibilities while continuing to anchor weekday editions of NFL Insiders. Ponder now becomes the new host of Sunday NFL Countdown and will also contribute NFL interviews and features. Finally, Wingo will now host all three days of the annual NFL Draft telecast on ESPN, beginning with the 2017 event April 27-29 in Philadelphia. He will also continue to be the face of ESPN’s daily year-round pro football coverage on NFL Live, NFL Insiders: Sunday Edition, NFL Primetime, and more.

FOX Sports reports that its coverage of the Big East men’s basketball this season scored its most watched season ever on the FOX broadcast network, FS1 and FS2 in 2016-17, with an overall viewership increase of 16% over last season and up 84% growth over the conference’s first season on FOX Sports in 2013-14. Big East men’s basketball games on FOX, FS1 and FS2 averaged 192,000 viewers per game during the 2016-17 regular season and conference tournament, with viewership up 20% on FS1 alone.

AT&T and DIRECTV are beefing up their lineup of MLB Network Showcase games in 4K on DIRECTV channel 106. The first matchup for 4K customers takes place on April 4 between the Cubs/Cardinals with Bob Costas, Jim Kaat and Tom Verducci calling the game. DIRECTV customers with the Choice package or higher and compatible equipment can watch up to 25 premier MLB match-ups in the format.

Speaking of DIRECTV, the Justice Department reached a settlement with the company, which had been accused of illegally swapping information with rival pay-TV providers about negotiations to show Dodgers baseball games in SoCal. Reuters reports that the settlement does not require any pay-TV company to carry the Dodgers channel but does require DirecTV to refrain from swapping competitively sensitive information with rivals, according to a court filing. Meanwhile, the company must also monitor some communications that their executives have with competitors and to implement compliance programs.

The NASL inked a new deal with beIN SPORTS and ESPN for the 2017 season. The agreements will see NASL games live on beIN SPORTS and beIN SPORTS En Espanol throughout the 2017 season, while ESPN3 will also serve as live carrier of weekly NASL action. “We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with such an incredible pair of broadcast partners in 2017,” NASL Interim Commissioner Rishi Sehgal said. “beIN SPORTS has become a central destination for soccer fans, and we’re excited to have NASL included in its world-class programming lineup. ESPN3 has been a great NASL partner for quite some time now, and through feedback from our fans, we know how much they love using the network to watch games, whether at home or on the go.”

Telemundo Deportes is lining up Rumbo Al Mundial, exclusive Spanish-language coverage of four key matches in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. The action begins today with live coverage of Trinidad & Tobago/Panama starting at 7p. Play-by-play commentator Copan Alvarez and former Mexican player Carlos Hermosillo will call the action.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

The National Association of Basketball Coaches and multimedia rights partner IMG announced a partnership with Twitter to live stream the 2017 AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show. The program is hosted annually in conjunction with the NCAA® Final Four and will be accessible via nabc.twitter.com or @NABC1927 on April 2 at 9:30p. Hosted by Allie LaForce, the AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show will include the announcement of Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year in all NCAA divisions, as well as the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year, the NABC Defensive Player of the Year and the NABC Freshman of the Year.

DraftKings announced that the beta version of their platform in Germany will now be opened to all German consumers. DraftKings will deliver all 10 of the sports currently available through their US product, including seven leagues of soccer, NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, golf, NASCAR, eSports and MMA.

The Canadian Hockey League opens the start of the OHL, WHL and QMJHL playoffs with the debut of CHL Fanbase  the league’s new digital fan engagement platform. Developed by Stadium Digital, the platform awards points to fans who engage with the CHL’s Playoff Predictor game and gives exclusive access to contests, promotions and events.
 
Podcasting network Panoply Media launched a new series The Dirty Tackle Podcast, offering game highlights and gossip on the pitch. Brooks Peck and Ryan Bailey host, along with soccer insider, “Theo Messi.”

ESPORTS

Lagardere Sports is doubling down on its esports partnership, and has signed League of Legends team ROCCAT to its client roster where they will join Unicorns of Love at the agency. Lagardere Sports will serve as the exclusive marketing partner of the esports team, overseeing partnerships and marketing for the squad.

Gfinity announced that OMEN by HP will serve as the first official partner of its upcoming esports tournament, the Gfinity Elite Series. Deal points will see OMEN integrated throughout the season, which launching in June. 

Blizzard laid out the launch of the Asia Pacific Overwatch League tournament series, which will see eight of the regions’ top teams square off in a weekly tournament format for a prize pool of approximately $273,000. Competing will be Taiwanese teams ahq Esports Club, Flash Wolves, and Machi Esports, Japanese teams DeToNator GOLD and SunSister, Thai team FireBall; Hong Kongbased roster Hong Kong Attitude, and Australian lineup Blank Esports during the 13-week tournament, which starts April 8.
