CYNOPSISDIGITAL
03.23.16 Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 23, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Chromecast app is no more; get used to calling it Google Cast. The rebranding reflects the expanding capabilities of the Google TV streaming app. No longer will its functionality be limited to the Chromecast dongle; instead, the technology will begin to be compatible with a growing array of devices, including smart TVs, displays, and speakers. One new device is the Vizio P-Series, an advanced TV that enables users to turn their phones into smart TV remotes using the Google Cast app – no external devices or built-in apps needed. The TVs are available today, starting at $999.
comScore’s efforts to dominate the audience measurement arena – or at least give Nielsen a run for its money – continue unabated. The company completed its merger with Rentrak only last month, and has since forged a major partnership with Viacom. Now comScore has pacted with Adobe, announcing that it will make use of new analytics and software from Adobe Systems. Adobe Certified Metrics will begin providing comScore with data garnered from digital properties that are running Adobe Analytics, enabling comScore to more precisely measure a number of metrics relating to video viewing, including rate of ad engagement and average time spent watching. You can learn more here.
AOL will be cutting ties with Whalerock Industries, the media firm that has worked to build up Moviefone’s website and apps since 2013. The partnership expires May 31. At that point, AOL will take Moviefone back in-house. AOL exec Jimmy Maymann tells Variety that AOL will now work to expand on Moviefone’s social reach and mobile capabilities, and invest in original video content, both internally and via deals with production companies.
Is “man fights dubious murder conviction” becoming its own docu-series genre? Coming on the heels of the highly successful Making a Murderer and Serial, Dateline NBC is set to launch Conviction, a four-part digital only documentary series about Richard Rosario, a New York man convicted of a 1996 murder. (A key sign that Rosario may be innocent: Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark is currently trying to get his conviction overturned.) The first four episodes are available now on datelinenbc.com, and the full series will be available on NBCNews.com starting tomorrow.
Canvas Media Studios is turning over a new leaf. The startup has inked a deal with the agency New Leaf Literary and Media (which reps the Divergent book series) to develop a slate of digital series based on young-adult novels from New Leaf’s clients. The new titles will include adaptations of the Losing It series by Cora Carmack, The Nightmare Affair series by Mindee Arnett, Kelly Fiore’s Thicker than Water, and two novels from April Genevieve Tucholke, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and its sequel Between the Spark and the Burn. The four digital series will run on both traditional and digital platforms. “The young adult audience has had the Internet their entire lives and have grown up with a connected device in their hand,” Canvas Co-Founder Bernie Su told Cynopsis Digital. “Developing young adult novels into digital first shows is the most natural way to adapt their favorite stories.”
Eat, Brains, Love, the teen zombie novel by Jeff Hart, is getting a feature film adaptation courtesy of Gunpowder & Sky. (The book’s not to be confused with the novel-turned-Julia Roberts vehicle Eat, Pray, Love, which featured significantly fewer zombies.) G&S, a new digital studio formed in January, will partner with the production studio DIGA and the digital book publisher Full Fathom Five on the project. G&S co-founder Van Toffler tells VideoInk that the film might be destined for digital-only distribution, though a theatrical release hasn’t been definitively ruled out.

Internet entrepreneur and Twitter co-founder Ev Williams announced that he will be spinning off Matter, the long-form vertical of his web platform Medium, into its own entity. Christened Matter Studios, the new platform will be “sort of a studio and sort of an incubator,” according to a statement published on Medium that said Matter Studios will finance, support, and develop numerous media projects, including multiplatform journalism, books, podcasts, live events, and streaming film, TV, and video.

While Snapchat may be the prime mover when it comes to vertical video ads, Hearst sees no reason to stop there: In addition to its two Snapchat channels, the media giant has now launched vertical video ads on all of its mobile sites. Hearst exec Todd Haskell tells Digiday that the ad format sees its highest demand on mobile properties that cater to younger demos, including Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Seventeen. Hearst’s efforts are instructive, and it’s worth reading Digiday’s article in full – you can check it out here.
Catchplay, the film production and distribution company based in Taiwan, is launching a new video streaming service. Catchplay On Demand, set to launch in Taiwan, followed by launches in Singapore and Indonesia in Q2 of this year, will feature film content from companies including NBCU, Disney, and Warner Bros.
Shareablee is out with its Social Scorecard for the Top Ten TV Networks of February 2016. To arrive at its rankings, Shareablee measured total social actions (likes, shares, comments, retweets, dislikes, reblogs) across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube (excluding views). You can check out the full list below.
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
Streaming Only (3/14/16 – 3/20/16)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipediapage views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Jeffrey Glasser, the former EVP of Current Programming at 20th Century Fox Television, has joined Wondery, the podcast network startup, as President of Content. He will also take an equity stake in the company alongside founder Hernan Lopez. Meanwhile, Wondery has also appointed Cristina Haro, formerly an exec at Univision Communications, as Account Executive, Brand Solutions.
Up top, we mentioned the new Google Cast-equipped Vizio P-Series advanced TVs. If you’re curious about that sort of thing – and if you’re reading this newsletter, you probably should be – then take a look at The Verge’s informative video overview of the new product. Check it out here.
See you tomorrow,
David Teich
