03/20/15: FIFA feels the heat; NBC Sports, Universal Sports go to the mats; MLS gets a snack pack

Good morning. It’s Friday March 20, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FIFA made it official, announcing that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will shift to a cooler season in November/December with the Final set to take place on 18 December 2022, Qatar’s National Day. The organization added that the tournament should be played over a reduced timeframe, potentially 28 days.

In addition, FIFA revealed that France had been awarded hosting rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2018, with the country winning the bid over Korea. Republic. The announcement followed a unanimous decision taken by the FIFA Executive Committee.

ON THE AIR

USA Wrestling, NBC Sports Group and Universal Sports Network locked in an agreement to offer “unprecedented coverage” of Olympic-style wrestling events held in the United States during the 2015 season. The deal will see NBCSN and Universal Sports Network combine to present nine USA Wrestling telecasts from five events and more than 12 hours of total coverage, marking the most live content in a single season in USA Wrestling history. Programming begins with the Freestyle World Cup in Los Angeles from April 11-12 and the U.S. Open in Las Vegas from May 8-9.

Meanwhile, Bell Media’s TSN and RDS extended their partnership in Canada with the French Tennis Federation, entering a long-term media rights agreement for the French Open through 2024. The alliance will see TSN and RDS will continue to be the exclusive Canadian home of this Grand Slam event, with TSN’s five national feeds offering live multi-court coverage throughout the tournament.

NBCSN saw Wednesday’s Blackhawks/Rangers game on the channel average 787,000 viewers, making it the second most-watched game of the season on the network behind opening night. Viewership peaked in the final full quarter hour with nearly 1 million viewers and notched a 2.39 rating in NY, which marks as the best-ever regular-season NHL rating on NBCSN in the market, not include the Rangers/Islanders Stadium Series.
 
Speaking of hockey, ESPNU carries the NCAA Hockey Championship Selection Show on Sunday at noon, where it will reveal the 16-team field for the NCAA Men’s Division I Hockey Championship. This year’s tournament will see eight regional semifinals and four finals from March 27-29 before concluding with the Frozen Four in Boston on April 9 and the Finals on April 11. ESPN will cover every game from the tournament. John Buccigross anchors the Selection Show and be joined alongside analyst Dave Starman.

On a similar note, the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), in conjunction with FOX Sports North revealed that Doug McLeod, Kevin Gorg and Dave Ellis will serve as the broadcast team for the 2015 WCHA Final Five, set for March 20 and 21 at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. “We are excited to have the wealth of talent and experience that Doug, Kevin and Dave bring to our Final Five telecasts,” said WCHA Commissioner Bill Robertson. “Our playoff championship will be a showcase of great college hockey, brought to life by FOX Sports North and our outstanding broadcast team, and delivered throughout much of the WCHA regional footprint.”

FOX Sports reports that the debut of Garbage Time with Katie Nolan reeled in over 563,000 viewers since its March 15 debut. Viewership came from both linear and digital platforms for the debut episode.

FOX Sports 1 gears up for coverage of the 63rd running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Saturday, March 21 at 10:30a. Coverage then jumps to FOX Sports 2 at 12:30p, FOX Sports GO at 7p, FOX Sports 2 again at 10p and back to FS1 on Sunday at 8a. Bob Varsha leads microphone duties with the second round of both the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the four-race Patron Endurance Cup.

HBO Sports launches 24/7 Alvarez/Kirkland, the 30-minute behind-the-scenes special about the upcoming May 9 welterweight battle between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland, on May 5 at 10p. Other HBO playdates include: May 6 (7:00a & 2:30p), 7 (11:30a), 8 (1a & 5:30p) and 9 (11a).

Pac-12 Networks offers live coverage of the 2015 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 21 at 1p PT and 6p PT. Play-by-play announcer Jim Watson will call the action, alongside former Olympian and current Pac-12 Networks analyst Amanda Borden. In addition to the Networks’ usual seven camera coverage for the broadcasts, four POV cameras have also be in the mix: two high cameras pointing down at the vault and bars, and two lower cameras pointing at the vault and beam. The platforms also added X-Mo for slow-motion replays. The channels also launch Friday Night Baseball tonight at 7p with Arizona/Stanford while Washington State/Oregon State run on the Oregon and Washington channel.

Disney Channel is developing a movie about famed Little League pitching sensation Mo’ne Davis. The film, dubbed Throw Like Mo, will see David consult on the movie.

Major League Soccer locked in another national sponsor, this time inking Mondelez International, the company behind the likes of Oreo, Ritz, Trident, Honey Maid and Sour Patch Kids to a multi-year deal to become the official snacks of MLS. Mondelez International became official snacks partner of US Soccer last year with the new deal extending to the cookie, candy, cracker and gum categories. The deal with MLS includes all forms of media, retail, shopper marketing, consumer promotions, PR and social media. The sponsorship also features rights to activate at the AT&T MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup and to align with current players and other league ambassadors.

The Legacy Agency and parent company TLA Worldwide acquired Elite Sports Properties, one of the largest sports marketing companies in Asia Pacific. Based in Australia, ESP was founded by former Aussie Rules Football Star Kelly, Australian Olympian Rob Woodhouse, and fellow directors Scott Davidson and Susan Harper. “We are delighted to partner with ESP,” said Bart Campbell, Executive Chairman of TLA Worldwide plc, in a statement. “This deal strengthens TLA’s business in Australia and enables TLA to expand our offering in the UK.  The management team is first class and have excellent reputations based on a long track record of delivering for their clients.  We look forward to working with ESP as we drive the business forward and continue to support their clients.”

George Pyne’s new company Bruin Sports Capital was the recipient of $250 million from a group led by ad company WPP in a round of fundraising conducted over six months. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is among the investors in the media, sports and marketing firm, according to Bloomberg.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

ESPN has a new record for its Men’s Tournament Challenge, drawing 11.57 million brackets submitted. Of course, only three games in, less than 1% were still perfect. Anyway, at the peak period of entries, fans registered 7,791 brackets per minute (129 brackets per second). More people picked Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke, and Virginia to reach the Final Four than any other teams.

NBC Sports reports that its digital sites saw all-time weekly records for the week beginning March 9. NBCSports.com notched its best week ever in page views, with 46.8 million, which ProFootballTalk.com has its best week ever in visits with 15.9 million, and page views with 33.7 million.

The International Judo Federation teamed up with RR Media to serve as the primary digital media services provider for all Judo championships, including the Grand Prix, Gland Slam and World Masters. The deal will see the IJF use content for video footage, news bulletins, online video, broadcaster distribution and highlight programs and the partnership will allow different international takers will also have the ability to access highlight footage of individual players as and when required. In addition video footage will be digitally stored with complete metadata added to it, enabling rights holders to access the video content effectively with a simple search processes.

In a new twist on the tournament, 36 corporate leaders have submitted entries for Bloomberg’s Bracket Challenge, each pledging $10,000 to the winner’s charity of choice. Participants include Bloomberg CEO Mike Bloomberg, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank (playing for the V Foundation), AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, Strauss Zelnick, chairman and chief executive officer of Grand Theft Auto video-game maker Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, Cisco Systems Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Chambers, Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, Lakers CEO Jeanie Buss, Cavs Owner Dan Gilbert, Bucks owner Mark Lasry,  Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca, Fortress CEO Mike Novogratz (Playing for Beat the Streets Wrestling),  and Goldman Sachs CEO Gary Cohn (Playing for Harlem RBI) are amongst those in the game, which is updated in real time.

Tough Mudder hired Donna Goldsmith as Vice President, Consumer Products. Goldsmith previously held executive positions at WWE and the NBA and will be responsible for business strategy to develop the global licensing business for the Tough Mudder brand as well as selection of a new partner for the Tough Mudder e-commerce business and retailer at venue.
